\ Some of the thoughts and relationships in “ Suzy and Leah” by Jane Yolen, had a great effect on Suzy. At first, she only sees herself and Leah as mere acquaintances, then she soon finds out that Leah isn’t who she is on the outside. My research on this article will describe to you about Suzy’s side of the story, and how she reacts to Leah. In the beginning, Suzy didn’t know what to think of Leah writing, “ She was just standing to one side, staring at me. It was so creepy.” In the second entry that Suzy writes, she states that Leah is a “Prickly porcupine” and does not want to work with her to teach her English. Suzy also calls her a grump, saying she wouldn’t laugh and she would never accept any of her gifts as she states, “ I tried to give her a handkerchief with a yellow flower on it. Suzy finds that Leah is in the hospital, and ends up reading her diary while she is there. She asks her mother about the holocaust, and feels sorry for her saying: “ How was I supposed to know all that? How can Leah stand any of us? How could she live with all that pain?” After the incident, Suzy and Leah became good friends now knowing their thoughts during what was going on when Leah had come to that school. As can be seen, Suzy’s feelings changed because of her unawareness of what was going on in Leah’s life. At first, she almost despised her, saying that she was a “grump” and a “prickly porcupine”. Then when Leah got hospitalized for her appendix, Suzy read her diary and found out why she was so deceptive. As a result, she became troubled on how much physical and mental pain she was going through during her time spent in the U.S. Therefore, a new relationship was formed and Suzy finally knew Leah, and what she had
