...In Alice Walker's "Everyday Use", The critic Timothy Sexton asserts that the older daughter, Dee, is the "embodiment of the struggle for a unifying identity" (par. 4). In contrast with Dee, the critics Houston A Baker, Jr. and Charlotte Pierce-Baker consider Maggie to be a guardian of history, or "griot" (164). Dee is a selfish and egotistical character with a superficial understanding of her inheritance. She characterizes the confusion and misguidance of young African Americans in the late 60s and 70s. This is apparent in her interactions with her mother and sister. As Sexton notes, Dee "considers herself as cultured, and beyond the abased quality of the lives lived by her mother and sister" (par. 3). She makes her feelings clear when she attempts to "take" the quilts Mama had promised to Maggie: "Maggie can't appreciate these quilts... she'd probably be backward enough to put them to everyday use" (Walker, 103). By using the quilts for purposes other than their original intent she believes that she is respecting her heritage, but this is not the case: her desire to put them on display is "really not quite so different from the white capitalist cashing in on ethnic artworks" (Sexton, par. 4) Not only is she conforming to the worst of American ideals, but she is rejecting and disrespecting her own cultural heritage-- all under the pretenses of preserving it. It is in this sense that she is the "embodiment of the struggle for a unifying identity," because she has not yet come...

...Penguins (order Sphenisciformes, family Spheniscidae) are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Antarctica. Highly adapted for life in the water, penguins have countershaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have evolved into flippers. Most penguins feed on krill, fish, squid and other forms of sealife caught while swimming underwater. They spend about half of their lives on land and half in the oceans. Although all penguin species are native to the Southern Hemisphere, they are not found only in cold climates, such as Antarctica. In fact, only a few species of penguin live so far south. Several species are found in the temperate zone, and one species, the Galápagos penguin, lives near the equator. The largest living species is the emperor penguin (Aptenodytes forsteri): on average adults are about 1.1 m (3 ft 7 in) tall and weigh 35 kg (77 lb) or more. The smallest penguin species is the little blue penguin (Eudyptula minor), also known as the fairy penguin, which stands around 40 cm (16 in) tall and weighs 1 kg (2.2 lb). Among extant penguins, larger penguins inhabit colder regions, while smaller penguins are generally found in temperate or even tropical climates (see also Bergmann's rule). Some prehistoric species attained enormous sizes, becoming as tall or as heavy as an adult human. These were not restricted to Antarctic regions; on the contrary, subantarctic regions harboured high diversity,...

...Lung Cancer Cancer is one of the most feared diseases in the world; it is the number one cause of cancer deaths in both men and women worldwide. In Canada, approximately 75,500 people will die from cancer in the year 2014. Fortunately, scientists have developed a greater understanding of cancer by performing autopsies in 16th and 18th century on cancer patients. Scientists such as Galileo, Newton and Harvey led to an understanding of the circulation of blood through the heart and body which had been a mystery till then. In 1761, Giovanni Morgagni performed autopsies on patients to relate their illness to pathologic findings after death, later in the 17th century, Scottish Surgeon John Hunter found that some cancers might be able to be cured by surgery depending on whether or not the tumor had not invaded nearby tissue and was “moveable.” In the 19th century, Rudolf Virchow performed microscopic research on cancerous cells on tissue removed in surgery, this helped identify whether or not the surgery had completely removed the cancer from the patient. Lung cancer is cancer that forms in the lungs. It is formed when cancer cells grow out of control and take over normal cells and organs in the body. Cancer cells are formed when the DNA is damaged in a normal human cell and instead of repairing itself, the cells replicate themselves which the body cannot benefit from, these new cells all have the same abnormal DNA that the first cell has. People can inherit...

...In 2008 they released an ad that featured Khloe Kardashian in the nude, posing provocatively, stating she would rather go naked than wear fur. This advertisement wants to convince it’s viewers that it is better to go without any clothing than to wear animal fur. The scope of viewers ranges tremendously; a naked woman plastered on a wall will receive the attention of most people. However, the intended audience that Peta tries to hone in on would have to be the younger generation, from mid teens to mid thirties. Younger viewers are more likely to connect with a socialite such as Khloe Kardashian, and are consistently more socially liberal than their older counterparts. Between the sex appeal, celebrity status, and ethical message within the ad Peta also uses several rhetorical appeals and strategies to help market a well versed advertisement that is designed to pull an audience in to hopefully communicate their message. The first noticeable piece in the ad is Khloe Kardashian herself. Khloe is made up to look like an animal, the dramatic eyes, and the wild back-brushed hair. Though she is done up and perefctly photoshopped to glow stunningly, the underlying impression of a wild animal is there and it is intentional. Even the color scheme gives off somewhat of a woods-like feeling, and while the background is dark and barren the scene doesn’t produce an upsetting notion. Instead it enhances the sexual features of Khloe. Peta uses the classic rhetorical appeal of pathos. The...

...Private schools are allowed to expel students and can choose not to allow certain students admittance. In fact, many private schools are difficult to get into. Public schools allow all students, regardless of religious creed, academic abilities or any other factor. Sending you child to a private school means enrollment is selective and demands are uniformly higher versus a public school where they will be exposed to a wider variety of people and abilities. In today's world, both are likely to incorporate students from various cultures and backgrounds. In most areas, your children will attend public school with other kids from the same area. However, a number of states are moving toward a policy where you can request a change if you desire. When parents choose a private school, they often do so based on their desire to give their children a specific peer group, whether that is based on discipline, cultural or religious background, or philosophical beliefs. This is perhaps understandable, in that establishing the right peer groups early on can have profound effects later in life. In most private schools, students are excluded or expelled if they do not adhere to the school's policies or standards. Because they do not use public funds (or in some areas, less funds), private schools are not as restricted in their program development or curricula. Private schools are not subject to budget limitations imposed by the state (although, they may in fact, have more restrictive limitations)...

...Josh Franklin 2/10/2013 P.6 Harriet Jacobs Slave Narrative Harriet Jacobs, born in 1813, was born in North Carolina and was born into to slavery to her mistress Margaret Horniblow. Harriet spent the first six years of her life not knowing that she was indeed the property of Margaret and before her master died in 1825 she was taught how to read and sew by Margaret. Once Margaret passed away, Harriet was inherited by Margaret’s niece Mary Norcom. When Mary inherited her new slave she was only three years old. Since Mary was so young, her father, Dr. James Norcom, became Harriet’s new master. Under James , Harriet soon became aware of the harsh realities of slavery. For twenty years Harriet struggled with Dr. Norcoms sexual victimizations. During this time she grew close to her grandmother, a free slave, and with a attorney by the name of Samuel Sawyer who fathered Harriet’s two children. In an attempt to manipulate Dr. Norcom into selling her to his father, Harriet ran to Grandmother’s house. For those seven years, she spent her time raising her two children, reading the bible, and sewing. In 1837, Samuel Sawyer was elected into the House of Representatives and had purchased his two children but he did not free them. In 1842, Harriet escaped North and was determined to free her daughter from her father. For ten years Harriet lived as a fugitive slave but she was able to locate her daughter, Louisa, in Brooklyn and secured a home for both of her children in Boston. While...

...Every night when I go to sleep I always have nightmares of the incident that occurred to my younger brother Bobo. I always wished it was me instead of him. It was a scorching hot day in Blafra where a war is currently happening near our village. Bobo and I decided to go outside and play tag with the other children in the small village we live in. As we began to play I counted down from ten and started to Bobo since he was the first one I spotted. As I was chasing him to the end of the village he stepped on a landmine that was most likely planted by the enemy to infiltrate our village and take captive of us. The mine packed a punch. The impact caused his legs to be totally obliterated. I stood there in dismay, reminiscing all the good times we had together. Like that one time we went to go hunt for antelopes, it was funniest moments we had together catching food for our family while conversing about life. I watched him drown in blood, as I suddenly felt a sharp pain because of pieces of shrapnel that hit me since I was behind Bobo; the boy was fast as the wind. The only thing left that I have to remember was his bracelet. I wish I was me instead of Bobo. Since that day this tragic happened I have been blaming myself for being unconcerned of where we were playing. Additionally I am his older brother so he is my responsibility to keep him from danger. This left a scar on me now that I have two sons myself I taught them my mistakes so that it will not happen to them. Now that years...

...Felix Siri Professor Chene Heady October 2nd, 2012 English 201 Character Analysis: Lucifer in Dante's Inferno Dante's Inferno in the Divine Comedy portrays Dante accompanied by Virgil, famous author to the Aeneid, journeying through the nine circles of Hell, encountering all sorts of demons, monsters, and the damned. Throughout this journey it is inevitable that Dante and Virgil will confront the greatest of the fallen, the lord Diabolus, Lucifer himself. Satan was once the greatest of God's angels, his beauty and magnificence was only matched by his arrogance and ambition for God's throne. Proving to be no match against his omnipotence and eternal power of the Lord, Satan was banished from Heaven for his treachery. His crashing descent into Earth left the deep pit that is Hell and the Mountain of Purgatory was raised on the opposite side. The popular conception of Dante's era depicted Satan as the ultimate master over the dominion of Hell and who always attempted to dissuade humanity from God's eternal light and join Lucifer in his damnation. Dante presents an almost polar opposite of the devil as just another powerless victim in Hell's tortures, based on his appearance, actions, and the ungodly center of hell in which the Devil resides. Dante's Satan is a truly horrific and yet almost pitiful being that resides n the lowest portion of Hell, the ninth circle that held the betrayers. Dante's apprehension to enter the ninth circle was well deserved, as it was truly a horrid...

...Marina Mitrakos Mrs. Johnson AP English 5 Period 1, 21 November 2014 Is “Safe” by Miranda Lambert the theme song for Nora or Hedda? Miranda Lambert’s song “Safe” is a better representation of Nora from Henrik Ibsen’s A Doll’s House than Hedda from his Hedda Gabler. The song begins with, “Just like the fringe on my boots, you move with every step I take” (Lambert). Likewise, Nora and her husband have equal dominance and work together; Torvald refers to them as, “We two…” rather than stating that it is only because of him that they are not in debt (Ibsen 2). In Hedda’s case, she and her husband could not even spend enough time together on their honeymoon, and therefore are not on “the same page”. The next lines, “You walk in front of me to make sure that I don’t fall” also relates to Nora because she confides in Mrs. Linde for advice, has the maid to take care of the children, and Helmer to provide money for the family, meaning she is rather dependent (Lambert). On the other hand, Hedda prefers to have control over everything by threatening and manipulating people and is independent. Additionally, the line, “We get prettier with time” represents how Nora and her family are finally starting to make money and have nice things, while Hedda and her husband seem rather distant, even on their honeymoon (Lambert). Since Hedda prefers to be superior, she would not, “find a way to free [her husband’s] hands [and] wash them clean” (Lambert). However, Nora cares a lot about helping her family...

...By: ABBAS SAID Forklift FUNCTION: The forklifts function is to lift items that are too heavy or big to be lifted manually. These items usually need to be transported from one place to another. COST: There are different types of forklifts and it all depends on the brand and the capacity that the forklift can hold. Usually it’s about $20,000 - $40,000 but the max could be around $150,000. CAPACITY: A forklift has a capacity of usually one and fife tons and larger machines could lift fifty tons. In many countries forklift operators must be trained and certified to operate a forklift. Forklifts were around for nearly 100 years. The forklift was invented in 1917 by the Clark Company. Now I will share some advantages and disadvantages of an electrical forklift. ADVANTAGES * Produce less noise and pollution * No fuel costs * The batteries are changeable and rechargeable * Have a large life cycle * Repairing is easy and does not cost a lot * Is used indoors DISADVANTAGES * Too expensive to buy or rent * Recommended not to use until fully charged and this will take a long period of time * Speed is slow * The capacity of lifting weight is lower * Only usable indoor * You can’t handle until fully trained There are eight classes of forklifts. Class 1 forklifts are electric-motor rider trucks, either stand-up operator or seated three-wheel units. Class 2 forklifts are electric-motor trucks for narrow aisle or inventory stock/order...
