Tactical Operations

...realized it needed a team specializing in high risk situations. This realization came from an examination of the way in which the LAPD handled the Watts Riots which resulted in six days of over three thousand arrests. The LAPD and other police departments also needed a way to combat sniper attacks such as the sniper incident in Austin, Texas in 1966 in which the only people capable of returning long range fire were civilians armed with hunting rifles. An LAPD officer name John Nelson introduced the idea of a specialized police unit to an Inspector Daryl Gates. Gates built the original SWAT team with 15 four-man teams. Each of the men originally involved in SWAT were volunteers from patrol officers, and all had prior military experience. Other Tactical Operations teams developed from or to aid SWAT teams, such as negotiations and bomb squads. The components of the Tactical Operations Divisions are SWAT, Negotiations, Bomb Squad, Dive Team, and K-9 Units. Each component has a special purpose but each is essential to the others. Having different teams for different needs allows each...

...Essay summary | | | | Program title: | MBA Marketing | Module title: | Foundation of Knowledge | EXPECTING THE UNEXPECTED? HOW SWAT OFFICERS AND FILM CREWS HANDLE SURPRISES. 1) How individuals respond to unexpected events that allow work to continue. 2) How are problems solved by using available resources? Outline the theoretical framework underpinning the study. It is impossible to predict everything that can go wrong in our daily lives and there is no question that all organizations, not just business, need to adapt in order to survive (Herold David M, Fedor Donald B 2009). Fortunately, in the academy of management journal article of expecting unexpected new research organizational behavior in fast -paced work environments has revealed a set of strategies that can improve individual reactions and overall group performance. The two author(s)’ Bechky and Okhuysen, in their study published in 2011 used strategic interviews and direct observation to find similarities between the ways Police SWAT team and film production crews cope with surprises breaking into a location, the SWAT team found more suspects than expected. In response, the lead officers changed their primary role from trying to reach the further corner of the location to covering areas and suspects as they advance. Speed

...os Angeles SWAT officers Jack Traven and Harry Temple thwart an attempt by a bomber to hold an elevator full of people for ransom. They corner the bomber, but he grabs Harry. Jack shoots Harry in the leg, forcing the bomber to release him. He turns and runs around a corner, apparently dying in an explosion. Jack and Harry are praised by their superior, Lieutenant "Mac" McMahon. Later, Jack sees a city bus explode. The bomber contacts him, explaining that a similar bomb is rigged on another bus, and will get activated if it goes over 50 miles per hour (80 km/h) and blow up when the speed drops below 50. Passenger Annie Porter takes Sam's place behind the wheel while Jack explains the situation to everyone aboard. Jack examines the bomb under the bus and phones Harry, who uses clues to identify the bomber as a former police officer. The police clear a route for the bus to a closed-down freeway. Mac insists they offload the passengers onto a pacing flatbed truck, but Jack warns about the bomber's demands. The bomber allows the officers to offload the injured Sam, but detonates an explosive under the...

He also wants a case of beer and some fast food soon or "something will happen". The focus of this essay is to explain the type of incident that has occurred, which category this hostage-taker falls into, and what my optimal role is in the situation as a police psychologist. Swat Analysis

...WHAT IS SWOT ANALYSIS? SWOT analysis (alternately SWOT Matrix) is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses/Limitations, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in abusiness venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500companies. Setting the objective should be done after the SWOT analysis has been performed. This would allow achievable goals or objectives to be set for the organization.  Strengths: characteristics of the business, or project team that give it an advantage over others  Weaknesses (or Limitations): are characteristics that place the team at a disadvantage relative to others  Opportunities: external chances to improve performance (e.g. make greater profits) in the environment  Threats: external elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project Identification of SWOTs is essential because subsequent steps in the process of planning for achievement of the selected objective may be derived from the SWOTs. First, the decision makers have to determine whether the objective is attainable, given the SWOTs. If the objective is NOT attainable a different objective must...

Special Weapons And Tactics Team

...team, can be defined as “A unit within a police force that is trained to deal with situations of unusual danger, especially when requiring aggressive tactics or enhanced firepower, as in rescuing hostages, thwarting terrorist attacks or assassinations, and subduing heavily armed suspects” (SWAT team, 2017). S.W.A.T. teams are there to respond quickly to dangerous situations and stop the issue as fast and non-violent as they can. SWAT teams started out as support and protection for firefighters and police officers. Basically, most of their duties were of the protecting nature. Soon, everyone realized that a team with highly trained officers would be very beneficial in some cases. The SWAT team was able to deal with a very wide range of incidents that could be defined as dangerous and had training skills way higher than an average patrol officer. Making no offense to officers, but the SWAT team trained specifically to handle major issues....

A Description of Cinematography in Leon

...survivor of the attack is Matilda who happens upon the scene as she returns from shopping. Her only option is to knock on the door of the stranger she talks to in passing, Leon. After saving her life Leon teaches Matilda to “Clean” and begins to track down her family’s killers at the cost of her teaching him to read and washing his place. As the film unfolds a relationship blossoms between the two characters as they learn to depend on each other. I wish to evaluate the showdown scene near the end of the movie. After Leon has killed nearly every member of Stansfield’s team, Stansfield decides to hunt down this hit man as well as the girl. Bringing all his might with the police he storms the building where Leon and Matilda live with hundreds of SWAT and police members. Matilda yet again, is returning from shopping, a mirror scene of when her family is killed. As Matilda returns the initial framing is a tight long shot of the hallway where she enters. This gives the audience a restrictive view point of Matilda’s perspective, the colours being very bleak, and no colour is particularly vibrant, even the green of the walls is greyish, this style is apparent throughout the places Leon and Matilda go and shows how bleak and almost hopeless their situation is. Though the hallway is evenly lit as to allow the audience to establish that it is clear. This is used to then surprise...

Police Militarization

...Law Officers or Infantry Officers? Many small-town police departments now boast the same weaponry once wielded by U.S. military units in Afghanistan — including tanks with 360-degree rotating turrets, battering rams, and automatic weapons. Those weapons are today deployed against Americans suspected of crimes in their own homes. Every day, Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams connected to local police conduct 124 paramilitary-style raids in the U.S., according to a new report by the American Civil Liberties Union. One of them recently drew national attention when a SWAT team in Atlanta burst into a private home and threw a live flash grenade into a 2-year-old's crib, severely injuring the toddler. Most raids by SWAT teams are conducted against suspected drug dealers, but they've also been deployed against a private poker game; a gay bar in Atlanta; a New Haven, Connecticut, bar suspected of serving minors; and even people suspected of credit card fraud. "Neighborhoods are not war zones," says the ACLU in its report, "and our police officers should not be treating us like wartime enemies." The first SWAT team was created by the Los Angeles Police Department in 1967 and reserved for the most extreme circumstances: riots, hostage scenarios, and active-shooter or sniper situations. But the "war on drugs," coupled with the sense of danger promoted by tragedies like the Columbine massacre in 1999 and the 9/11 terror attacks, encouraged police departments even in small towns...

Police Militarization

...Blake Davis PS 201 Police Militarization 9/9/2014 PRO: Sometimes the only way for an officer to diffuse a situation is by using force. According to an article found on the website of the National Institute of Justice, the use of force is described as the, “amount of effort required by police to compel compliance by an unwilling subject” (International 2012). In some cases, the amount of force necessary to effectively compel compliance can only be obtained through use of military grade equipment. According to Radley Balko, proponent for the opposition of police militarization and author of Rise of the Warrior Cop: The militarization of America’s Police Forces, “There was unquestionably a need for the SWAT team approach in handling serious violent emergency situations, particularly those involving hostage taking and terrorist related incidents, and that was their primary use from their inception through the 1970s.”(Bickel 2013). There are clearly circumstances under which police militarization is necessary to ensure the safety of the public, as well as the police force. Statistically speaking, the police seldom use excessive force when interacting with offenders. During his lecture on August, 2 2014, Dr. Robert Press stated that nationally, it’s estimated that police only use force on 1% of citizen-police contacts. This statistic is verified by a report issued by the Seattle Police Department (SPD Report 2010). Statistically speaking, it is difficult to argue that...
