In a statistical overview of sport and recreation participation by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2012), it was found that female participation rates dropped by 9.7% between the ages of 9 and 14, while male participation rates in the same age range increased by 2.1% (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2012). This raises questions as to what the underlying cause is that results in young girls, specifically, making the decision to stop participating in recreational activities and sport. It is my theory that body image is a big factor in a young girl’s decision to drop out of sport and recreational activity. My research on this topic is primarily focused on females, ages 10 to 15 years old. While there are aspects of my research that also relate to adolescent males, the vast majority of my findings are more closely related to adolescent females. My best evidence came from a study conducted by Amy Slater and Marika Tiggeman (2011), which surveyed adolescent participation in sport and other recreational activities between males and females. Key findings included adolescent females participating in organized sport at a lower rate than males of the same age, girls getting teased by both same-sex and opposite-sex peers (as opposed to boys only getting teased by same-sex peers), and strong prevalence of eating disorders related to appearance-oriented physical activity (Slater & Tiggeman, 2011).
