Tesla Motor’s journey since its foundation in 2003 to being ranked third among the most innovative companies in the world in 2015 according to Fortune (Murray, 2015) and the third most innovative company in the automotive sector in 2016 according to Fast Company (The Most
Innovative Companies of 2016: Top Companies by Sector, 2016), demonstrates their ability and determination to upset the status quo and eagerness to disrupt the automotive market by trying to change the global preference towards greener electric vehicles. However, is Tesla’s approach towards this niche market by manufacturing models …show more content…
Threats:
 Tesla’s biggest threat would be the possibility of established automotive giants like Ford,
General Motors, Chevrolet, Audi and Mercedes investing their time and resources to take their market share in the niche electric vehicle space.
 Tesla could potentially remain a luxury automobile for the high class and unattainable for most middle class families, considering the very high prices of all its vehicles so far.
 Failure of electric cars to gain popularity at the same rate as the traditional gas-fueled cars
 Tesla being relatively new, the technology they use is also quite new. Therefore, solving problems that come along the way could result in a delay in production of every new model.
 Again, since Tesla is a fairly new company, any incident is most likely to become viral and have a negative impact on the brand image.
Opportunities:
 In the long run use of gasoline-fueled vehicles will decrease and environment friendly electric vehicles will emerge as the new solution to transportation.

Moreover, the company receives real time data based on thousands of drivers, making it easier for them to track and work on problems and issues that need to be addressed.
Furthermore, Tesla’s auto parking feature on the 7.1 software update in early 2016 and long term vision of launching completely self – driven cars by 2020, before Google and Mercedes, contributed to their high echelon in the list. (Tesla Motors, 2016)
TESLA’S DIRUPTIVE INNOVATION
Tesla has entered the automotive market to create their niche market in this segment by manufacturing and selling luxurious and technologically advanced cars, with sole intensions to disrupt the industry and eventually shift global preferences towards electric vehicles and substitute the traditional gasoline – fueled cars.
 Although, their business strategy was a top – down approach (which in ways is also disruptive), they have launched the mass – market affordable $35,000 Model 3 car which would help achieve their ultimate goal of disruption.
 It creates asymmetric motivation among competitors to enter this market. Automotive giants have started manufacturing electric vehicles to tap and exploit the potential of this
