SWOT Analysis Wheeling Hospital Inc.
The place I chose to do my SWOT analysis on is Wheeling Hospital, where I work. It has served as a hospital in the Northern Panhandle of WV, Eastern Ohio and parts of Pennsylvania longer than any other hospital in and around WV. Founded in 1850 by Bishop Richard V. Whelan and Dr. Simon Hullihen, owned and operated by the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. A catholic hospital that serves as a health ministry that provides care to people of all creeds and providing first-rate health care by abiding to their mission of HUMAN TOUCH: Healing, Understanding, Ministry, Advanced technology, Nurturance, Tradition, Ongoing education, Unity, Care and Hope. Wheeling Hospital has the area’s only full service Cardiac Catherization lab, which allows them to diagnose and treat all cardiac health issues. All other hospitals in the area are only able to take X-ray pictures of your heart, but if you need treatment for your case, they have to send you out to another hospital an hour to two hours away. This proves to be an advantage for Wheeling Hospital because people who care about their loved ones, wants them to recover with the least amount of complications and with the heart, time is of the essence. They also provide extraordinary cancer care through their Schiffler Cancer Center. It is internationally recognized and has treated patients from thirty-four states and thirteen foreign countries. It has the only Comprehensive Cancer Program in its market that was designated by the American College of Surgeons. Wheeling Hospital has many facilities under its belt that aid in the healing and caring of patients throughout the area. They have the Continuous Care Center that provides round the clock care for elderly who have no other means of care at their homes. The Howard Long Wellness Center which provides comprehensive, medically based, high-quality education and fitness services to its members, which allows patients the opportunity to achieve a maximum potential health, fitness and well-being. Wheeling Hospital had also affiliated themselves with an acute care hospital, known as Belmont Community Hospital in 1996. That hospital was established in 1914 and is located in Bellaire, OH, right across the Ohio river from Wheeling, WV. It has a medical staff of over one-hundred physicians with all kinds of specialties. It offers a full array of inpatient services including pediatrics, intensive care, orthopedic surgery, cardiac care, rehabilitation and mental health. With all these facilities, plus more, Wheeling Hospital has a wide range of medical treatments available to everyone in the surrounding area. One thing that I feel is a weakness to Wheeling Hospital is the location. With other facilities within walking distance from surrounding neighborhoods, Wheeling Hospital isn’t that convenient. There is a bus route that takes you to the facility, but with only one road to the facility, the traffic going to remains to be an issue. With the way people are becoming more and more impatient, small tasks like waiting for the bus, is very time consuming. Also, in an economy lacking in money, having to spend it on transportation, becomes a pricy things when you have to get multiple treatments for your ailments.
Other problems that Wheeling Hospital has to face in their normal day to day operations remain the same that any other hospital anywhere have to deal with when it comes to dealing with the public and their loved ones being treated at the facilities. There is always a constant battle to maintain the quality, cleanliness and all around maintenances of the structures that make up the organization. With that in mind, every quarter, the Joint Commission, a company that comes into Wheeling Hospital to make sure that they are meeting the performance standards to assure that the public always experiences the safest, highest quality, best-value health care across all settings, inspects the hospital.
There are many threats when it comes to Wheeling Hospital functioning in the area that it is located because they are always looking to advance their level of technology and medical treatments, but there are other hospitals and medical facilities in the area not affiliated with Wheeling Hospital. There is Ohio Valley Medical Center (OVMC) and Eastern Ohio Regional Hospital (EORH) located within the vicinity. OVMC was founded in 1890 as City Hospital. It is a two-hundred bed health care facility that is located in the downtown area of Wheeling, WV. EORH, founded in 1906 as Martins Ferry Hospital, is a one-hundred and forty bed facility located in downtown Martins Ferry, OH. From a twenty-four hour EMSTAR emergency and trauma care to orthopedic and rehab services as well as the most comprehensive behavioral health programs in the area, OVMC and EORH have maintained and continue to grow, which keeps Wheeling Hospital always watching to be sure to always be aware of their competition. when it comes to expanding, the other hospitals in the area do everything they can to slow or even stop the process. When Wheeling Hospital Inc. wanted to break ground on their new expansion, Tower 5, Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital, both affiliated with each other, appealed to the West Virginia Health Care Authority regarding the expansion. It didn’t stop the expansion, but it pushed the ground breaking of the tower back a few months and cost Wheeling Hospital more money because of it.
This is why Wheeling Hospital is always on its toes trying and working hard to maintain the quality of medicine and the quality of life that enters into their facilities. They pride themselves on being the area’s best medical facility by continuously looking for better treatment options, newer approaches to healing the sick and always looking for the best medical staff in the region. With every other hospital in the area trying to be better than the other, which tends to be an ongoing task, Wheeling Hospital is ever growing and will continue to grow for years to come. They shall always follow their mission of Human Touch and will maintain their quality care by following their motto of “A Tradition of Excellence, A Legacy of Caring!”

...The Advantages of SWOT Analysis Because of the constantly changing conditions in the monetary market, the quick response to challenges becomes more and more important to all companies. However, in order to survive in the economic battle, business owners should make the best use of the SWOT analysis to gain a thorough overview of their business. The SWOT analysis is a management tool that is mainly for observing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of business. It can be used on companies, as well as on persons, to identify their internal and external elements, evaluate the overall conditions, and make strategies and future plans according to the results. As Simoneaux, and Stroud (2011) state in their article “SWOT Analysis: The Annual Check-Up for a Business” that one of the main benefits of the SWOT analysis is that it makes people thinking and preparing in advance to challenges, not the late solution to the problems(2011, p75). However, some people point out that because of the simplicity of either conducting the analysis or the analysis itself, the results of the SWOT analysis may not be as accurate as people think. Although SWOT analysis may not generate specific solutions to the existing or approaching problems, it still has the advantages of low cost, clarity of business‘s overall conditions, and the unlimitedness of applying to any kind of business. The one main advantage of SWOT analysis is the low cost. In recent marketplaces, nearly everyone can run...

...Haas, Frederick-SWOT SWOT Analysis- Description Before developing a SWOT analysis it is necessary to understand the organization’s business plan. This will ensure that the marketing plan supports the business plan. Elements of the business plan consist of the organizational level mission, vision, goals, objectives, and strategies. The marketing department must understand the organization’s mission, or what defines the company’s reason for existence. It must also understand the strategic vision, which is where the company wants to see itself in the future. It must prioritize organizational goals that support the mission and vision to become attainable objectives. From this information an organizational strategy is developed to accomplish the mission and objectives. There are four dimensions of an organizational strategy that must be analyzed in order for marketing to support organizational goals. The first dimension is a competitive strategy that Michael Porter separates into three categories: Low-cost, differentiation, and focus. The process involves identifying the organization’s core competencies, or, things the firm does exceedingly well. If the organization determines that part, or all of their core competencies are superior to those of their competitors, they are defined as distinctive competencies. ...SWOT Analysis You've heard the saying 'if it isn’t broke, don't try to fix it.' In certain circumstances, this is definitely true; however, in business, it is almost always false. Maintaining a competitive advantage in the marketplace requires organizations to be in a state of constant renewal by examining what they are doing well and what they need to improve on. While an organization may not be 'broke,' so to speak, every organization can be better in some way, shape or form. One of the most commonly used tools in strategic management and managerial decision-making is known as the SWOT analysis, which is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The SWOT analysis can be universally applied in a variety of situations, such as introducing a new product to the market, project management, changing distributors, expanding to another location, outsourcing and so on. During a SWOT analysis, an organization will proactively assess its internal environment for strengths and weaknesses and then examine the external environment for opportunities and threats. The internal environment refers to things that go on inside the company that, for the most part, the organization is in control of. Examples of the internal environment include: * who you hire to work for your organization * the skills and knowledge of your employees * the chain of command * what products or services you offer * what price you charge your customers * your margin...
