Symbolism In John Capote's In Cold Blood

One of the most symbolic scenes in In Cold Blood is the first scene, when Capote begins to describe the town of Holcomb. This is very symbolic as it sets the scene and tone of where the brutal crimes will take place. Capote begins with the location of Holcomb, “on the high wheat plains of western Kansas” (Capote 3). He then goes into extensive details about the location and landscape in Kansas. Holcomb is a small town, it has “two apartment houses”, “a falling-apart post office” and “Hartman’s Café” (Capote 4). Since these are the main places Capote chooses to highlight, we know that these will be important parts of the story later on. As far as the rest of the town “that, really is all” (Capote 4).
