Three months ago, BEN’s fiancée, KYRA, died in a horrific car crash. Grief-stricken and unable to move forward, Ben heads to Cabin Green, which reminds him of a happy place from childhood. He almost has a car accident on the way.
Ben swims to a nearby island but soon sees smoke pouring out of the cabin. He gets back in time to see the cabin in flames. He rushes inside without thinking and passes out. When he comes to, there’s no sign of the fire. Later, he meets a friendly old man at the local convenience store who reminds him of everything he wishes he’d had in a father.
Kyra comes to Ben in realistic visions, and strange things begin to happen throughout the cabin. He also encounters his childhood boogeyman in the lake. Back in the present, Ben puts together a jigsaw puzzle and is distressed to discover it shows someone jumping to their death. The imagery on the puzzle changes frequently, and he’s eventually able to enter the puzzle.
A boat trip around the lake ends in the discovery of a pile of bones on the lakebed. That night, the bones appear in his bed. Panicked, he takes them to the island and buries them. He also encounters a fully-formed skeleton who speaks in Kyra’s voice and tries to kill him.
Ben temporarily loses his hearing after a spectral thunderstorm and discovers he can’t leave the cabin. While Ben deals with his grief and despair, Doug and his husband attempt to find their missing friend. Ben gets sucked into the puzzle again, followed by a series of odd dreams and meditative states that leave him even more tortured.
The ghost finally speaks to Ben and he attempts to make a deal with it. The ghost makes it clear he must watch a scene within the puzzle, but Ben refuses. He spends several days trapped in the cabin with a dwindling supply of food and cigarettes. He goes through nicotine withdrawal, malnutrition and dehydration before giving in and agreeing to watch the puzzle
