The systems development life cycle (SDLC) is the traditional systems development method that organizations use for large-scale IT projects. This system is designed to help the flow of information from department to department. The three major advantages of SDLC are accountability, error detection and control of the information being processed. SDLC is typically made up of eight sections. They are: systems investigation, systems analysis, systems design, programming, testing, implementation, operation, and maintenance.

Systems investigation is a feasible study in which a business will decide on which three options they will conduct with their business in order to stay relevant. They are: (1) do nothing and continue to use the existing system unchanged, (2) modify or enhance the existing system, or (3) develop a new system. This step is carried out by the board members, or a committee that is driving the process. If they are not present, then management would step in to make the decision.

A systems analysis is the examination of a business problem and that the company or organization plans to solve with an information systems and are carried out by a systems analyst.

Systems design describes how the system will accomplish its tasks. This is basically the blueprint of how the system will be integrated in the organization; including hardware, software, personnel, procedures, and user interfaces amongst other things. This step is typically carried out by the project managers.

Programming involves translating the desired fields, designs and functions into computer code.
Testing is the next process and it is used to see if the computer codes that were implemented will produced the desired results under different scenarios and conditions. This task is for the programming team.

Implementation is the process of exchanging the old system with the new one. This
