There is a constant reminder to be aware of bacteria in various mediums. In this TED talk, a conclusion that can be made by what the speaker, Mr. Ewald, had stated, was that there seems to not be very much that can be done to control the effect on what the bacteria does. It relies heavily on the effort of a collective group of people to make a difference.

Ewald presents is that when diffused by water, the virulence of a disease is greater and the disease is more harmful than in comparison to other instances. Ewald’s notion is that, by impeding water-borne transmissions, we could possibly lower the virulence of the disease. Although this is an intriguing thought, organisms tend to take a long time to alter and adapt to situations.

However, it could be that if they did change quickly, then it might be possible to make bacteria develop in a way that it does not pose a threat to us.

Naturally, the following step in this process is to perform an experiment. In his talk, Ewald mentions bacterium Vibrio choleri, the species of bacteria that causes cholera. This is chosen because we are aware of why it is a threat to humans. By creating a contaminant that is discharged when the bacteria reaches our intestines, it can cause fluid from our intestines to pour out of our bodies.

Mr. Ewald mentions that in Peru, where water regulations are very low in quality, the disease increased in virulence and created more problems than in Chile, where there had been stronger regulations.
