...Even though different cultures disapprove of tattoos, there are significant meanings in tribal tattoos because many tribes require tattoos for different cultural reasons. Humans have tattooed their bodies with a variety of symbols showing their religious beliefs, status symbols, declarations of love, or even different forms of punishment. Scientists say that the marks on the skin of the Iceman dating from back to 3300 B.C., are tattoos. Tattoos also can be found on Egyptian and Nubian mummies dating all the way back to about 2000 B.C. The markings found on the ancient Egyptians were done for reasons scientists still debate about. One theory is that only the “dancing girls” were marked with tattoos showing their prostitute status. The other theory is pregnant Egyptian women were tattooed to protect them during birth and “keep everything in” while pregnant. One thing scientist know for sure is that only the woman in the Egyptian society were tattooed. The tattoos that have been found are all of designs across the abdomen, thighs, and breasts. The designs are dots in a net like pattern the flow across the woman’s abdomen, breasts, and thighs. The Greeks and Romans however, referred to tattoos as a “stigmata.” They used tattooing to mark a person showing they belong to a specific religious group or to show they are a criminal. Roman soldiers were required by law to have tattoos on their hands to make it difficult for them if they deserted their group. Tattoos spread...

...For a long time now body art and decoration has been a custom in many cultural groups. Through research we have learned about the different types of body art and ornamentation such as permanent and nonpermanent tattooing, scarification, and piercings. These forms of body art and ornamentation are done for a variety of reasons, ranging from identification purposes to religious rituals. “Skin, as a visible way of defining individual identity and cultural difference, is not only a highly elaborated preoccupation in many cultures; it is also the subject of wide-ranging and evolving scholarly discourse in the humanities and social sciences” (Schildkrout, 2004). The process of ornamentation and body art is usually a painful experience, but it is a way to signify a person’s self-discovery and their place in society. In this paper, I will explore the different aspects of body art and ornamentation in two different cultures; the Maori people of New Zealand and the Yoruba’s of West Africa and explain the cultural importance of their art. Throughout West Africa it is not uncommon to come across people that have scar stripe patterns on their cheeks. The facial stripes that they wear are not produced by paint or tattoos, like many other cultures, but only by scarification. However, in his article, Orie explains that not all of the Yoruba people have the facial stripes. Okola is a term used for describing someone whose face is scarred, it means ‘the one with facial stripes’. People that...

...(to account), a prefixed form of computare (to calculate), which in turn derived from putare (to reckon). While the word itself does not appear in English until its use in 13th century Norman England, the concept of account-giving has ancient roots in record keeping activities related to governance and money-lending systems that first developed in Ancient Israel, Babylon, Egypt, Greece, and later, Rome What is accountability and the definition: (DOD) The obligation imposed by law or lawful order or regulation on an officer or other person for keeping accurate record of property, documents, or funds. ...Intruding Ima and the Falsified Report An 8-year employee of your police agency, Officer Ima Goodenough, is a patrol officer who often serves as a field training officer. Goodenough is generally capable and experienced in both the patrol and detective divisions. She takes pride in being of the “old school” and has developed a clique of approximately 10 people with whom she gets along while mostly shunning other officers. As an officer of the old school, she typically handles calls for service without requesting cover units or backup. She has had six complaints of brutality lodged against her during the last 3 years. For Ima and her peers, officers who call for backup are “wimps.” She has recently been involved in two high-speed pursuits during which her vehicle was damaged when she attempted to run the offender off the road. Ima will notify a supervisor only when dealing with a major situation. She is borderline insubordinate when dealing with new supervisors. She believes that, generally speaking, the administration exists only to “screw around with us.” You, her shift commander, have been angry about her deteriorating attitude and reckless performance for some time and have been wondering whether you will soon have occasion to take some form of disciplinary action against her. You have also learned that Ima has a reputation among her supervisors as being a “hot dog.” Some of her past and present supervisors have even commented that she is a “walking time bomb”...

...Security" A little background on what it means to exercise command at sea: "Only a seaman realizes to what great extent an entire ship reflects the personality and ability of one individual, her Commanding Officer. To a landsman, this is not understandable, and sometimes it is even difficult for us to comprehend--but it is so! A ship is a different world in herself, and in consideration of the protracted and distant operations of the fleet units, the Navy must place great power, responsibility and trust in the hands of those leaders chosen for command. In each ship there is one man who, in the hour of emergency or peril at sea, can turn to no other man. There is one who alone is ultimately responsible for the safe navigation, engineering performance, accurate gunfiring, and morale of his ship. He is the Commanding Officer. He is the ship! This is the most difficult and demanding assignment in the Navy. There is not an instant during his tour as Commanding Officer that he can escape the grasp of command responsibility. This is a duty which most richly deserves the highest time-honored title of the seafaring world--'CAPTAIN.'" Captain Joseph Conrad Our Case Study: The weather would be turning bad overnight, but late on a sunny afternoon in gentle seas, the Commanding Officer (the CO) had a fresh cup of coffee in hand and enjoyed what little was left of the day in his designated chair on the bridge. It was an older ship, but she could still perform in an award-winning way, even...

On September 29, 2005 at approximately 1500 hours I was dispatch to 1235 West Chester Apartment 217 in Hometown. I had arrived at the scene at 1520 hours and was briefed by Detective Joe Johnson of the homicide scene. Detective Johnson and I then continued with the investigation by taking measurements of one area of the scene in which the homicide occurred. We were able to measure the size of the room by feet’s, and points of measurements in which the body was located within the area of the room to the body, to be able to obtain the position of the body. I then started collecting the evidence in the apartment, finding the following evidence: E-1 a piece of hair on the victim’s body, E-2 a towel with blood wrapped around a large kitchen knife, E-3 a small paintbrush with dried paint on it, E-4 glass fragments from a lamp or light bulb, E-5 a piece of paper with a phone number on it, and E-6 a soil sample of a foot print located outside in the front yard. ...Lord of the Flies Lord of the Flies starts off with a bunch of boys stranded on a tropical island. This is a perfect place for a group of kids to have tons of fun. The kids have no adult supervision and do not have to worry about getting in trouble by adults. "When the little kids land they are delighted to find that there are no grown-ups about. This shows that they do not worry about getting in trouble, which will later come back to haunt them. The young boys plan on having a fun time on the island and plan on just goofing around. All the kids seem to be happy about being together on the island and plan on being rescued soon. The children in the first section of the book still follow the laws and rules that they had before. Jack "The hunter" cannot bring himself to kill a pig in the beginning of the book. "In his first confrontation with a pig, Jack fails, unable to plunge his knife into living flesh, to bear the sight of flowing blood, and unable to do so because he is not yet far enough away from the taboo of the old life. This shows that the kids still do have morals. Another example of the boys still following the laws and rules of society is when “Roger throws stones at Henry, but he throws to miss because ‘round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law. These rules and laws however do not apply much longer to these children. Things start to go down hill when work has to be done and they have to act more like adults...

...Unit 7 Assignment Supervisory Practices in Criminal Justice Pro Denise Womer Case Study Jane Roberts Public Safety Officer Public Safety Officer Jane Roberts got pregnant while on duty by her Field Training Officer, Andrew Tibbetts. Now she blames her supervisor, Sergeant Williams for the incident because he’s the one that paired her wit FTO Tibbetts, knowing he was known as a ladies’ man. She is threatening to obtain workers’ compensation since it occurred on duty, after contacting a lawyer over the pregnancy. There are several issues with the incident with PSO Jane Roberts, as well as the department and how it’s ran in terms of keeping employees. Sergeant Williams paired Roberts with Tibbetts because he was one of the best field training officers he could pair her with and she held her own against other officers like him in terms of the flirting. He felt she could handle it and she completed with high marks on her training. Sergeant Williams could not have foretold As a supervisor I feel that Sergeant Williams did not make a sound operational decision when he assigned PSO Roberts to FTO Tibbetts. According to our text,” good supervision is the result of the serious application of one’s knowledge about human behavior to the work situation. As a supervisor he was knowledgeable to the fact that FTO Tibbetts had a reputations a lady man and although in the past PSO. Roberts has done well with handling other interactions with male...

...Professor DelNero English 1021 11 December 2013 Review Assignment After watching this video you start to think of Ohio as one massive enclosed zoo. This documentary touches on a great national debate in which both sides are holding their ground. It was alarming to me to see how many exotic animals were present all around us especially in Ohio. This movie shed light into the daily duties of a police officer that many people do not get to see, along with the responsibilities these officers have in society. I honestly thought this documentary was well put together and really gave credit to the officers that are on first lines of this exotic animal infestation. One of the more extreme examples of this animal infestation was with an older gentleman who was raising 2 African lions. Since he lived in a more remote area of Ohio he thought it would be all right to raise these exotic wild cats. The older gentleman who was raising these big cats had had them from when they were kittens and had grown to love these animals, which is what makes owning them even more dangerous. What really brought this documentary together was the fact that they showed both sides of this national debate. They gave you an inside look on how the owners of these animals are feeling and why they have these exotic pest. It also shows how the police and animal control have to round these dangerous animals up and risk their life doing so. All in all I thought this documentary was well put together and shed valuable...

...Exercise 2 Given below is a direct Memo from the President and CEO of Meherban Marketing Enterprises, Hyderabad, as part of company policy. To : All staff From : Vivaan Gupta President and CEO Date : 18 July 2014 Subject : Cutting Down Tour Expenditure of Officers In the recent months, I has been noticed that there is a spurt in the tour expenditure incurred by our officers when they had gone on tours/visits. This was not only a wasteful expenditure, but also sets a poor example to our subordinates. In view of the above, may I request to all the heads of divisions, to see that not more than 5% of the officers be sent on visits/tours at any one time. As far as possible they should not stay in accommodation which is higher than their entitlement/permissible allowance. The laundry expenses in a large number of cases which had exceeded the cost of board. I guess it is the time that with immediate effect a flat laundry allowance of Rs. 5/- per day should be granted. Entertainment allowance was also on the higher side. I would like to invite your opinion on the amount, which should be admissible. Personally, I think Rs. 15/- per day would be more than adequate. In addition, I received a representation from the officer’s union that they require a hike in their conveyance/fuel allowance, at Hyderabad. I am sure that all Divisional heads would motivate their staff to see this request of mine in its correct perspective. This policy...

...2LT Dorado Reminder: * Officer birthdays are added to the BC’s calendar (at the top). Birthday cards should be handed out to all officers and 1SGs, on their birthday is the goal but if it falls on the weekend, you could hand out either the week before or after. I usually do up to 2-3 months at a time and give to the BC for signature; if you receive new officers in this period you may have to do a few individual cards in between you regular printing periods. This will also be true if the officer gets promoted during the period in which you have already printed the card. The birthday card format can be found in the folder titled LTC Willingham. All logistic officers within the BDE will get a birthday card. * USR (AR 220-1) is done at the end of the month- SPC Morris and SGT Tunwar are the subject matter experts (SME). The Soldiers only fill in the following slides: personnel shortage, personnel and the nonavailable slides. You will then fill in the personnel portion of the commander’s and resource summary slide. MOS shortages are sometimes required a few days before the slide deck when it falls on the holiday or during field periods. When you receive the email from the S2, get with SGT Tunwar and give him a suspense to get the information to you. It is a good practice to send him the last month’s slides in which you had sent previously to the S2. He is tracking that he has to prepare the MOSI and identify the top 20 shortages and forward to the CSM. You...

...leadership position makes him or her a leader. We fail to provide leadership training, and then wonder why we have a leadership void. The Solution: We need to acknowledge leadership is never about rank, position, or title. Those put you in a leadership position, but they do not make you a leader. Next, we need to understand leadership can be learned and can be developed. We should be providing ongoing leadership training to people in all levels of the organization starting with the patrol officers.2. Law enforcement in North America still operates on the mindset that the only time you get called into the boss’s office is when you are in trouble. We have a culture where we do not celebrate our daily successes and justify it by saying, “I am not going to pat you on the back for doing your job.”The Solution: You can start by celebrating all the things officers do on a daily basis. Celebrate when they solve crimes, work with the community, enhance a training program, complete a critical project, help a fellow officer, or change the life of a young person. As the great leadership trainer Bill Westfall preaches, we need to “catch a cop doing something right.” This is not about giving people ribbons and medals for showing up. It is about acknowledging the accomplishments of the men and women in law enforcement with a small ‘thank you’ or...

...Kyle watched the cop take the money and instantly felt infuriated. He’d been watching this guy for weeks, and up until now he had been clean and a model citizen. He helped buy groceries for low income families and never had a complaint filed against him. The last cop Kyle punished begged. He ignored him and shot anyway. Kyle’s mission was to get get rid of all the corrupt cops in New York City by an any means necessary. So far he never caught anybody taking another bribe. The cop finished collecting his money and started to leave the alley. Kyle knew he had to do it while they were still out of sight. He hopped off his perch, pulled out his pistol and loaded it. At first, Kyle was sneaky while he followed the cop. Then, with the loud thump of a garbage can, he made his presence known. The cop turned around, his eyes filled with fear. When he realized who Kyle was, he started trembling. “It-it’s you,” he stuttered. Kyle didn’t answer, he just stood and stared. “What, you want a cut?” he asked. “Here take it,” he said as he tried to hand Kyle a bundle of money. Kyle raised and aimed his gun and then shot. The bullet went straight into the cop’s left arm. The cop let out a resounding scream and fell to the ground withering in pain. “Stop taking bribes,” Kyle growled. “Or I’ll come back.” Kyle took off and ran the other direction. He heard sirens behind him. He ducked into the next alley and picked out his backpack from behind it’s hiding place...
