Tabatha’s Salon Takeover

Tabatha’s Salon Takeover is a reality show in which Sear Genius contestant and hair salon owner, Tabatha Coffey helps failing salons turn around in one week. In class we viewed the hair salon “Ten”, which was a perfect example of a failing salon. Management is what drives a business, is the act of controlling and making decisions about a business. Without a good manager every business will go down eventually.
Ten was founded by a woman. She was the manager of her own business and she set an autocratic leadership style where her employees have to obey her instructions without questioning and without receiving and explanation for such instructions. She micromanages the salon. She has many books where she explains how does she wants things, the employees are supposes to memorize and follow the protocols she set. This book includes scripts on what they should say when a customer come and rules on how to do every task. She lacks communication by relying heavily on her employees to learn.
Ten is an informal business, where responsibilities are not well distributed. There are a lot of responsibilities for the managers and the owners and also the secretaries. There seems to be flexibility in how they run the salon, because they have a hairdresser who works there but actually cants work on the floor because he has not been approved yet.
The Salon also needs to improve their leadership department, because the manager does not accomplish many of the qualities the business need. As we can see in the video, she does not have confidence in herself and tend to reflect it in her business, she is insecure about what she is doing and those are attitudes that a good leader does not have; a good leader should be confident in them and what are they doing in their business.
