Socialization and the Tahitian Culture
Introduction to the Tahitian Culture The culture that I chose to research was Tahiti. I have always wanted to visit the islands of Tahiti to experience the beautiful landscape, rich culture and friendly locals. Currently, Tahiti is a nation in the Pacific which is blended in the French and Polynesian heritage. The language spoken in Tahiti is mainly Tahitian and Tuamotu while English and French are learned as secondary languages. The number …show more content…
Some of the three most interesting aspects of the Tahitian culture are its way of life, values, and beliefs. For instance, Residents adore children, and most couples look forward to raising a family. Infants and children are raised under the influence of parents as well as grandparents, siblings, and other relatives. Infants are the center of attention in households (Hanson, 1970). The society recognizes and ranks a series of gods from the supreme deity to own family spirits of the dead relatives. The gods require some form of appeasements to continue to protect and give favor to the community and …show more content…
Education entails training in skills and crafts. The skills passed obtained in school often consist of tattooing, canoe making or some other form of wood working. The family was the other agent of socialization in the Tahitian society. Once children were born, they turned to the older children of the household who gave them company in the playground and acted to shape their social beings. Children were also close to their grandparents who through their fascinating interaction through humor and teasing passed sexual advice and technical information (Levy,

Polynesian Dance vs Native American Dance

...Research Paper While traditional Native American dance and the Polynesian dance are both unique to their cultures, a developed comparison reveals they share many similarities in technique and meaning. In this essay, I will evaluate these similarities along with the differences that make each dance unique to its people and their culture. “Dance is a poem in which each movement is a word and is the most hidden language of the soul” this was found searching the web for what others felt the meaning of dance meant to them. An interesting fact about cultures and dance is that dance was used to express how they felt and emit their own expression of themselves. One thing that both Native American and Polynesian both have in common are they both believe in the spirits of their ancestors. When the Polynesian's danced the Hula they thought that if done incorrectly that something would happen and may turn disastrous while Native American dance specifically for a reason and believed if they asked for thanks for necessities they would acquire it. Both dances were created for one reason and one reason only to ask for help spiritually. Native American culture and the way they danced were entirely for their Gods, basically as an offering to show how important they were and how much their Gods were believed in. As the Polynesians too were spiritual and wouldn’t dance until an elder blessed the area in which would be danced upon, they also danced to perform for their people as entertainment...

Tattoos

...WRT 1020 March 14, 2013 Research Paper Tattoos From the time we are born until the time we are elderly we are constantly around tattoos. In the United States a person must be 18 before they can get a tattoo legally without parents consent. Therefore, many children like the idea of tattoos, so many put on temporary tattoos such as the stick on temporary ones with water and henna tattoos. A tattoo is a type of art where he or she gets a permanent picture or design process of pricking and ingraining an indelible pigment. The word tattoo is said to have came from two different origins the Polynesian word ‘ta’ which means striking something and the Tahitian word ‘tatau’ which means ‘to mark something (“Tattoo Temple”). Many people across the world have tattoos in all different sizes, colors, and places. Each person who has a tattoo has gotten it for one reason or another. It is amazing how long tattoos have been around for. One fact obtained from doing research is, “Believe it or not, some scientists say that certain marks on the skin of the Iceman, a mummified human body dating from about 3300 B.C., are tattoos” (Krcmarik). It is very interesting to know that tattoos have been around for this many years, it was until 1991 when the tattoos were discover on the Iceman by scientist Otzi. It is incredible how they were still able to discover these markings on the Iceman after so many years of being frozen. Many people over look tattoos as dumb useless art on the body, but many tattoos...

...A vacation to remember In the start of the story, the main character described how he acted while he was in Bora Bora. He said he wasn’t shy to ask anyone for favors. He showed this through examples like how he asked the farmer if he could help and the bus drive tour with Teróo. When he asked Teróo if he could help out, at first she thought he was joking but in the end she agreed in exchange for a story about him. While the tour was going on, he said that he was from the Philippines which surprised Teróo because there he was the first Filipino she met. While talking and seeing the great sights of Bora Bora, they got to know each other better and eventually, Teróo invited him to sleep with her family and he gladly accepted. While on the boat to Huahine, Teróo’s hometown, he felt nervous because the boat ride was delayed due to the low tide. When he met Teróo’s daughter, Simone, he was immediately attracted to her. She told him that she was just finished high school and was going to college in U.C. Santa Barbara which was why she spoke English really well. When they got on the motorcycle, he that Simone made him wrap his arms around her waist. Usually, he felt awkward around girls. This was the time when he fell for Simone. When they got to Simone and Teróo’s house, he was surprised that it was different from the other islands. It didn’t have mountains and most of the houses were made with concrete. When Simone introduced him to her family, they immediately accepted him....

...that is more experimental with art, music and sports. Crews and crews of Graffiti artists as well as Skaters are flourishing, Local bands are reaching new heights, and of course, the Industry of Tattooing is growing by the minute. The word tattoo was said to have two major derivations. From the Polynesian word “Ta” which means “to strike something” and from the Tahitian word “Tatau” which means “to mark something”. Archaeologists across the globe have unearthed preserved corpses and mummies that are tattooed. These mummies are said to have lived thousands of years ago, and most of the bodies bore tattoos that signify their cultures, ranks and beliefs. According to research, tattooing has been in activity to many countries such as Japan, Egypt, China, Polynesia, New Zealand, Indonesia, India, Thailand, Africa, Ancient Greece and Rome, America, England, France, and the Middle East thousands of years ago. It is arguably claimed that tattooing has existed since 12,000 years BC and it is as diverse as the people who wear them. The purpose of tattooing varies from culture to culture and its place on the time line. Tattoos have served as rites of passage, marks of status or rank, symbols of religious and spiritual...

Introduction to Psychology

...developmental psychology. Because of time limitations, none of these topics can be covered in great depth. The reference textbooks and the material presented in class will serve as the primary sources for the material to be covered. INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGY Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and mental processes. It is an academic and applied discipline involving the scientific study of mental processes and behaviour. Psychology also refers to the application of such knowledge to various spheres of human activity, including problems of individuals' daily lives and the treatment of mental illness. It is largely concerned with humans, although the behaviour and mental processes of animals can also be part of psychology research, either as a subject in its own right (e.g. animal cognition and ethnology), or somewhat more controversially, as a way of gaining an insight into human psychology by means of comparison (including comparative psychology). Origins of the psychology Near the end of 19th century things started drawing together. Questions raised by philosophers were being examined by physiologists, and vice versa. a. What is the relationship between the mind and the body? b. Why do people loose their minds? What is insanity? c. How do we perceive things? Why are their perceptions of the same stimulus different? d. What affect do our experiences have on us? How important are environmental influences versus characteristics and predispositions we are born with...

...our tendency to lie, even when we couldn't possibly be caught? • W h y do we splurge on a lavish meal but cut coupons to save 25 cents on a can of soup? • W h y do we go back for second helpings at the unlimited buffet, even when our stomachs are already full? • And how did we ever start spending $4.15 on a cup of coffee when, just a few years ago, we used to pay less than a dollar? hen it comes to making decisions in our lives, we think we're in control. We think we're making smart, rational choices. But are we? In a series o f illuminating, often surprising experi ments, M I T behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Blending everyday experience with ground breaking research, Ariely explains how expectations, emotions, social norms, and other invisible, seemingly illogical forces skew our reasoning abilities. N o t only do we make astonishingly simple mistakes every day, but we make the same types of mistakes, Ariely discovers. We consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. We fail to understand the profound effects of our emotions on what we want, and we overvalue what we already own. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predict able—making us predictably irrational. From drinking coffee to losing weight, from buying a car to choosing a romantic partner, Ariely explains how to break through these systematic patterns o f thought to make better...
