Evaluating Taipei Metro System

Transport and its conveniences and inconveniences is a daily thought that doesn't escape most people's minds from the moment they are ready to leave their homes, to the moment they are ready to leave their offices, or schools. The MRT (Taipei Metro Rapid Transit System) has worked its way into being regarded as a convenient mode of transport. In this essay the MRT transit system's convenience will be assessed in terms of its schedule, comfort, and payment system.

Firstly, the MRT's schedule is considered convenient due to its constant arrivals and departures from station to station. This allows users to have confidence in it as they are able to arrive at their destination on time. As long as the users set an approximation of the time required to reach somewhere, they are most likely to arrive punctually. Also, the availability of the MRT at late night hours is convenient, as it allows its users to spare more time on their daily recreations as they are able to have a transport system available until midnight. This also caters for the working population who work night shifts and are in need of such a service. Furthermore, the MRT has 70 stations, with a train departing approximately every three minutes at these various stations, all around Taipei City. This reflects that the MRT has established a large network, judging from the number of stations available.

Secondly, the comfort is another dimension in which the MRT's convenience can be assessed, as it provides priority seats catering for the elderly, handicapped and pregnant passengers. It also provides handles for standing passengers along the isles. These arrangements allow the carriages to make use of all the space and hence accommodate more passengers and any possible baggage they would have. The MRT is so accommodating of its user's comfort to the extent that the carriages are equipped with air conditioning units. These units ensure that passengers feel cool and comfortable while in transit.

China Airlines

...Introduction In Dec 2010, China airlines Ltd, announced that it had recorded sales revenues of 138.14 Million dollar as for flights carrying people. The company’s Sales Revenue increased by 41 % from Dec 2009 in which the company had achieved 98 Million Dollars. This increase was followed after the company’s announcement in January 2010 that its recorded Sales reached an amount of 358 Million dollars in Dec 2009 including civil and cargo services. These numbers show a huge deficit in the total revenue of flights carrying civilians where the main source of profitability was based and focused on Cargo flights services. Still CAL, China airlines Ltd, didn’t complete its Mission well in terms of increasing profitability and developing its services in order to boost its revenues. Still Civil flights consider covering 38% of the company’s recorded sales. In our paper we stated the company’s Vision, Mission, and Objectives in order to state a plan for developing the company’s civil flights using an edited Business Model. CAL’s problem was in its high costs among competitors who used the LCC (low cost control) in their business in order to create a competitive advantage. In our paper we edited the company’s business model in which we entered some of LCC programs that may attract more customers and compete strongly with competitors. For that CAL developed its systems to be number one leading systems among other airlines especially those in emerging markets such as Mainland china. We...

Google and Taiwanese Government at Odds over Android Market Refund

...COM 558: Opinion Paper Google and Taiwanese government at odds over Android Market refund Background The Android Market Team of Google issued an important change to paid apps in Taiwan On June 28, 2011. Recently, the Taipei City Government announced that mobile app stores--including Android Market--would be required to provide a seven day refund window for all paid apps. Therefore, we wanted to let you know that we are suspending paid apps in Taiwan while we continue to discuss this issue with the Taipei City Government. (Open letter to consumers from The Android Market Team of Google) What happened was Smartphone users in Taipei city had complained that they were unable to claim a refund if they downloaded and feel unsatisfied about it. The Taiwan Consumer Protection Act requirement of a free-trial period of at least seven days for items purchased is originated from mail-order merchandise which consumers cannot feel or touch the goods before ordering. The seven-day-period also considers time for shipping. Internet was included in the category of Mail Order Purchase Rules in Consumer Protection Act in the amendment to the Consumer Protection Act proclaimed in 2003. Taipei’s Law and Regulation Commission informed Google Taiwan, as well as Apple Asia, of the complaints in a formal letter, demanding an explanation and an outline of improvements by the date of June 23rd of deadline. Apple Asia responded before the deadline and amended its refund policy to comply with Taiwan’s by extending...

Acer Case Study

...Case 1-3 Acer Inc. Acer Inc. is a leading marketer of notebook and desktop PCs. The company, which posted sales of $11.3 billion in 2006, also produces other products such as flat-screen monitors and personal digital assistants. As Taiwan gained a reputation as the “tech workshop of the world,” Acer was able to become Taiwan’s number one exporter by manufacturing and marketing computers sold under its own brand name. Acer also produced equipment on an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) basis for well-known global companies such as IBM, Dell, and Hitachi. As company founder, chairman, and CEO, Stan Shih built Acer Inc. into one of Taiwan’s most successful companies. Despite Acer’s success, the company had trouble breaking into the American market. Between 1995 and 1997, Acer’s U.S. market share dropped from 15 to 5 percent. In the late 1990s, Shih noted, “In the United States and Europe, we are relatively weak. The local players there are very strong. The problem is that we don’t have good experience in marketing in those regions. It’s a people issue, not a product issue.” Shih has discovered that building brands in the business-to-business market is easier than building brands in the business-to-consumer market. “Business-to-consumer brands have more value but also face more challenges. People involved in business-to-business are usually rational, but consumers in business-to-consumer are usually emotional in choosing their brands,” he says. In 2000...

China's Geography: Video Report on Taiwan

...decided to go to Taiwan. They not only taped the landscape but also themselves. They introduced everyplace they went, they also talked about their feelings at those places. I was really enjoying watching their videos, since their videos make me feel that I was with them in Taiwan. They had been to many places in Taiwan. They start from Taipei, and they went to many small towns and a couple of national parks. Wherever they went, they talked about the food, the hotels, the landscape, and some interesting phenomenon. In general, these videos are very interesting, and they show a lot of things about Taiwan. The first video was basically about the reason why they were going to Taiwan, and the first day in Taiwan. And the first day was all about the food, especially the food at night market. There is very interesting scene on the first day. When they were talking about the bad smell in the night market, I saw a sigh “fried stinky tofu” behind them. This is a cultural difference, they might think the food was terrible because it smells such stinky, they never knew it tastes very delicious. The following days, they continued to explore the city of Taipei, and other areas with their rental motor scooter. They saw interesting buildings, temples, people and landscape. Also, I actually began to love the way they travelled. Kyde said that “sometimes I just don’t prepare anything, and see what’s gonna happen.” Something interesting then did happened, for instance, the local food, lodging,...

Photo: Li Li-fa, Taipei Times Taipei Times – A boy reads in the Sunflower Library in Terong Village in Pingtung County's Changjhih Township earlier this month. Photo: Li Li-fa, Taipei Times Named after a flower that symbolizes vitality and hope, the Sunflower Library in Terong Village (德榮) in Pingtung County's Changjhih Township (長治) is more than an ordinary library. Having survived the brunt of storms and frequent flooding, it has become an embodiment of the power of love and collective effort. The establishment of the library stemmed from a tragedy involving a young girl surnamed Huang (黃), who died in a car accident a decade ago while cycling to a downtown library to return some library books. At the time, the village did not have a library, which was why the young girl had to cycle a long distance to borrow books. Saddened by this misfortune, Lee Chen-wei (李鎮衛), who then served as a village coordinator, resolved to take action and push forward with the creation of a library in the remote community. The proposal was encouraged by Lee's wife, Tsai...
