Blood Bath A very recent study by AAA Foundation, using driving stimulators, says that talking on the phone while driving shows the same behavior as when you drink and drive. They also found out that when people talk on the phone and drive they are more likely to get into an accident than someone drinking and driving. The ad that was chosen for this paper is the ad against talking on the phone and driving. This ad had many points to consider when choosing it. They go against women in this ad, even though it based on only one women in the ad. They really depict why it is so bad to talk on the phone and drive and what it can do to you and your family if something bad were to occur because of it. They also show an amazing and eye catching effect of blood within the ad that makes you really focus on it when first seeing it. After reviewing the ad, it has both good and bad features to it. The woman, and only seen person in the ad, is an Indian lady in a kitchen that is reacting to the phone call she just received. The placement of the woman really shocked me. They put her in the kitchen, “where women are supposed to be”. This lit a spark showing how disrespectful ads can be against sex, race, and religion. They did not think about how the ad looked towards women. The saying had a lot to do with that disrespect. They used “he”, as if women cannot drive. They also made it seem as if it was her fault that she called him. Did he call her or did she call him? Did he have to answer his phone? No. They showed it as if it was her fault though, and she called him. This is not a good representation for the ad. They should have chosen a different slogan for the ad, even though they did choose a great topic it to do the ad on. Talking while driving is a very serious topic and should be focused on more than it is. When people

Cell Phones Are Dangerous Distractions to Drivers

...lives, whether for personal use or for work. To me we rely so heavily on the cell phone that it is becoming dangerous. Think to a time when you were driving down the road and came up on a slower vehicle. They were swerving within their lane, couldn’t keep a constant speed and just seemed like they were completely distracted and not paying attention to the road and the seemingly easy task of driving. You want to get by the person but every time an opportunity to do so came into view it would quickly disappear because the other driver would speed up or do something to avert your opportunity. Finally you get your chance and go around the person. You look over in an attempt to quench your curiosity and see the person is talking on their cell phone. It all makes sense now; they are paying more attention to the conversation they have going on than to their driving. Driving is a dangerous activity in itself, but when you add other distractions like talking and or texting on a cell phone, the outcomes can be anything but pleasant and lead to extensive consequences. Drivers are far more distracted while talking on a cell phone than just talking to a passenger in the car. Recently my wife and I were going to a store. I have driven this route several times and knew exactly where to turn, but because of the distraction of talking, I missed my turn. This happened with just a passenger in the car. I can only assume if I had a cell phone up to my ear, or even using a hands free...

Distracted Driving

...Distracted Driving Sometimes in life “sorry” can become a magic word and fix everything, then there are times that saying “sorry” undoes nothing. Will saying “sorry” help when you crash your parent’s car, because you are too busy looking at your phone? What about when you kill someone’s child because you’re too busy talking to your friend and run a stop light? Will you say “sorry” to the kid’s parents and expect everything to be okay? Saying “sorry” cannot begin to fix some things and preventing those from happening by acting responsibly in the first place is the best you can do. I like the introduction technique with the hypothetical questions. However, you now need to transition into your thesis or central claim, and that central claim needs to come here, at the end of the intro paragraph. Ninety percent of car accidents are caused by human error – driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, speeding recklessly, changing lanes without signaling, passing through red lines, and probably most known of all: distracted driving OK, first of all, don’t begin body paragraphs with statistics. Cell Phones and Driving Distractions

...fully visible, observers must be able to readily identify the object if they consciously perceive it, and the event must be unexpected. Talking on a cell phone is a great example of how inattentional blindness can be produced. For example, if I were engaging in a conversation on my cell phone while driving my car, I wouldn’t be fully paying attention to the road. My conversation would be distracting me from having a clear mind on the road and therefor I would be blind to certain (or many) stimuli I pass by or come across. For example, while driving and talking on my phone, I may pass a bicyclist and not even be aware of him or her, because the distraction of my phone conversation has made me create an inattentional blindness to the event. David L. Strayer and Frank A. Drew’s conducted a research study of how the effects of driving a car while talking on a cell phone can induce driving distractions and cause inattention blindness to the event. The researchers stated in their article on page 128 “The objective of this article is to muster evidence in support of the hypothesis that cell- phone conversations impair driving by inducing a form of inattention blindness in which drivers fail to see objects in their driving environment when they are talking on a cell phone.” This study conducted four studies in which each driver used a computerized driving simulator that incorporates vehicle- dynamics, traffic-scenario, and road-surface software that provided realistic scenes and traffic...

Driver distraction due to cell phone usage is a plague that is causing more and more car accidents every year. People quickly forget that driving is a privilege and not a right. What are different states doing about it? Should it be a concern of ours? Did you know that car crashes are the leading cause of death in the U.S.? The statistics of car accidents due to cell phone usage is a hot topic for lawmakers, cell phone manufacturers, and concerned citizens. A study by the National Safety Council found that 8 out of 10 people use their cell phones while driving and that 1 out of 5 text while driving. Cell phones are a factor in six percent of all car crashes which equates to 636,000 crashes, 330,000 injuries, 12,000 serious injuries and 2,600 deaths. These are shocking statistics that easily can be prevented by refusing to use your phone while driving. Research done by the Iowa Civic Analysis Network said, “National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that distracted driving contributes to 25% of all police-reported traffic accidents. The most common distraction is cell phone use, which increases the likelihood of an accident by approximately 300%.” One of our problems as Americans is that we like to multi-task. ...phone features dialing, listening, and talking and only had a talk time of 35 minutes that took 10 hours to charge. Although the “DynaTAC” was introduced in 1973, it was not put on the market until 1983.The cost of this cellular was $3,500. Today’s cell phones are much smaller and most of them weigh less than three ounces. They have a variety of features. To name a few; built in cameras, video capturing, text messaging, touch screens, and mobile web for less than a fraction of the cost of the “DynaTAC”. The price of cell phones today can run anywhere from $50 to $600. Studies done by Davis, Payne, and Mozee (2010) “Cell phones are now widespread, with more than 255 million wireless subscribers in the United States, comprising 84% of the population. In 2007, cell phone users spent 2.1 trillion minutes talking on cell phones and transmitted 363 billion SMS (“text messages”) over the course of the year.” With so many people using cell phones one can only imagine how many people drive while using their cell phones. Therefore, is it dangerous to drive and use cell phones? Should there be stricter laws banning or putting restrictions on the use of cellular phones while driving? And, are restrictions necessary in order to help save lives? Often people don’t feel that their behavior has an effect on the lives of others. Are Cell Phones Dangerous

...FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.--Talking on a cell phone while driving is as dangerous as driving drunk, new federally funded research shows, and it doesn't matter whether you use a hands-free model or hold the phone up to your ear during the conversation. The study, by University of Utah researchers, adds to a growing body of evidence that conversing by phone while behind the wheel can be hazardous. "We found that when people talk on a cell phone they are as impaired as they are when they drive intoxicated at the legal blood-alcohol limit (of 0.08). It was a surprise to us," said Frank Drews, one of the Utah researchers who has published earlier studies showing drivers on the phone are at higher risk of accidents. The peer-reviewed study is being published Friday in the quarterly Human Factors, the journal of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, which promotes the study of how humans, machines and other devices interact most optimally. The study was funded by a $25,000 grant from the Federal Aviation Administration, which is interested in impaired attention in pilots, and by the researchers. Drews and co-author David Strayer said lawmakers might want to use the findings to consider outlawing cell phone use while driving. The cell phone industry has issued guidelines for drivers using the phones but maintains under certain conditions it is safe to talk and drive. Among the guidelines: place calls only when not moving, use a hands-free device...

How Cell Phones Affects Driving Performance

...can make driving conditions more dangerous for everyone on the road. By knowing that driving while talking on a cell phone decreases driving performance, drivers hopefully will avoid using their cell phones until they have reached their destination. The end result of this will end up making the roads safer for everyone. Also, government officials can make laws that uphold drivers to certain standards, to keep the roads safe. For instance, there is already a law that prohibits drivers that are under 18 from talking on their cell-phone, however, it is legal for the majority of drivers to talk on their cell phones. Statistics and findings from these studies, can in turn persuade government officials into changing the laws to improve safety. These results also relate to what I’ve learned from my understanding of psychology. While talking on a cell-phone, a driver may experience a decrease in their cognitive ability to drive because they are distracted. In class, we learned about two parts of selective attention.
