Another example is the unity amongst Eddie and his legal team as well as the Passi brothers because without them, Eddie would not have the same confidence. Nevertheless, a lack of unity is demonstrated in his argument with Netta and the physical abuse that followed. The most important demonstration of unity is depicted through the relationship Eddie has with Netta. The pair supports each other and this is shown through the active reminders from Netta reassuring him that his battle is respectable and that she is proud of him, ultimately giving him the will to continue with his case. Without the support from Netta, Eddie May never have been able to achieve what he had, such as the connection with his family and the land claim of Murray Island. Another example includes job resignation; Netta was unhappy at first but eventually accepts it and soon shows her support. Additionally, Netta threatens to leave him at one point, but she quickly forgives him and this shows that she is a strong woman and to allow her husband to reach his full potential and achieve his dreams was a respectable move. ...Running Head: Effectiveness of Juvenile Correctional Facilities Effectiveness of Juvenile Correctional Facilities: Juvenile Crime Kalah Jiggetts Criminal Justice Abstract This paper uses data on juvenile offenders released from correctional facilities in Florida to explore the effects of facility management type (private for-profit, private nonprofit, public state-operated, and public county-operated) on recidivism outcomes and costs. The data provide detailed information on individual characteristics, criminal and correctional histories, judge-assigned restrictiveness levels, and home zip codes—allowing us to control for the non-random assignment of individuals to facilities far better than any previous study. Relative to all other management types, for-profit management leads to a statistically significant increase in recidivism, but, relative to nonprofit and state-operated facilities, for-profit facilities operate at a lower cost to the government per comparable individual released. Cost- benefit analysis implies that the short-run savings offered by for-profit over nonprofit management are negated in the long run due to increased recidivism rates, even if one measures the benefits of reducing criminal activity as only the avoided costs of additional confinement. Design/methodology/approach – Three survey instruments were administered to 297 working professionals taking business courses offered through a college of management at a private university. Correlational research methodology was used to investigate the relationships between selfattributed needs for achievement on demographic, interest and effort variables. Discriminant analysis was used to determine if motivational and profile characteristics could be used to predict low and high self-attributed need achievers. Findings – The major findings of this study centered on the leader’s ability to inspire followers by using a variety of interesting coaching techniques and by building their self-esteem regardless of achievement orientation. Research limitations/implications – The results of this study are tentative and need to be reproduced with a larger, more comprehensive sample of a broader population. Though it goes by many names, including Community Sentencing and Intermediate sanctions, it still maintains a single identity. It is a form of punishment for offenders as an alternative to incarceration. This program applies to offenders chosen at the judge’s discretion and is based upon the offenders compliance, the nature of the infraction, and the burden on the system. Involved is a period of time where the offender is confined to his home under the supervision of a probation officer and some form of electronic monitoring. These monitoring options include the random call method (RC), an ankle monitor using radio frequency (RF) or GPS technology, or a combination thereof (Burell & Gable, 2008). Electronic monitoring is touted as an ideal means of reducing overcrowding in jails and prisons, but how effect is electronic monitoring and house arrest really? More than 30 years after its integration, there are several issues that have developed, or that have yet to be resolved. It's such a truly bad idea that there seems to be no credible academic effort to deploy it at all. The Presidential elections of 2000 brought national attention to problems with current American methods of casting and counting votes in public elections. Most people believe that the current system should be changed; there is much disagreement on how such changes should be made. The MIT/Caltech researchers [1] “see a promising future for electronic voting, despite its problems today” (under a few conditions). They advocate using the methods currently in use which result in the lowest average numbers of “uncounted, unmarked, and spoiled ballots,” like in-precinct optical scanning. Their report even proposes a framework for new voting system with a decentralized, modular design.
