In “How Tap Water Became Toxic in Flint, Michigan”, by Sara Ganim and Linh Tran, they wrote about the problem that faces Flint. They tried to save money by switching their water supply from lake Huron to the Flint. However, what contributes to this conflict is that they are 70 miles away from the largest group of fresh boobies. Eventually leading them to look for a closer water source. The problem with this switch was that that river passed through a town known for its filth. This became a problem because soon after the switch people noticed the difference in the taste and look of the water. They tested the water and found out that the water contained high levels of iron and some lead. Later they started to say that they were drinking poison. The water containing high levels of iron eventually affected several children. The children had an increasing levels of lead to double or even triple in their blood.The high levels of lead can cause this children to have long term consequences such as drop in IQ, affected mood behavior, and more. …show more content…
For example, Ganim and Tran mention, “ Later it became publicly known that federal law had not been followed. A 2011 study on Flint River found it would have to be treated with the anti-corrosive agent for it to become a safe source for drinking water.” They didn’t pay attention to the health care of their people but only say there own greed blinding them to try to save some money .This greed also didn’t let them see the consequences of the switch in water source.Furthermore, Ganim and Tran calculated along with experts, “ Adding the agent would have cost about $100 a day, and experts say 90% of the problems with Flint’s water could have been avoided.” If instead of trying to save money they would have spent more to have clean water then they could have made the switch to in the long term save
