Taxing Junk Food Essay

I believe putting a tax on sugary drinks would be a good way to combat obesity since “Soft drinks account for more than 10 percent of the caloric intake, representing a doubling since 1980” (Nestle, 2006); this is of huge concern because soft drinks provide empty calories, or calories that only bring with them a high-density of energy but not of nutrients. If 10% of your calories consistently does not provide the nutrients you need, the amount of optimum nutrients is curtailed and could eventually lead to a form of malnutrition or a vitamin deficiency. Overweight children are at an especially high risk because they tend to “consume 1200 to 2000 calories per day from soft drinks alone” (Nestle, 2006) and not only does this cause a form of malnutrition but it makes it more likely that these children end up with an excess of calories, which leads to obesity. …show more content…
If these kids stop buying these drinks, they can buy drinks that are healthier like milk or water, which are healthier for the body. Taxing soft drinks puts a disincentive in the first place because children and young adults usually get a limited amount of money (allowance and such). If they see that their soft drink is consuming a chunk of their allowance, it is possible that they will start limiting the amount they buy. It could also help the parents make better decisions because the only reason that parents give in to the requests of their children is when it is something seen as absolutely necessary and of low-burden. This is why when children ask for food of any sort, it is usually given to them, but if the soft drinks are of higher price, it could start being seen as an occasional “luxury” or an item that is no longer easily accessible, so it will be harder for the children to get this. If parents start buying less, the children will consume

Exploratory Essay on Unhealthy Food

...Why Should Unhealthy Foods Be Taxed Around The World? An Exploratory Essay Nicholas Jackson Goldey - Beacom College Why Should Unhealthy Foods Be Taxed Around The World? An Exploratory Essay I normally eat French toast sticks with bacon or waffles with bacon for breakfast in the morning because it is the most convenient for me - it comes in a pre-cooked package that I could throw in the microwave and be ready in the minutes – and it tastes good to me. Even though it may taste good to me and will settle for a breakfast meal for my stomach, I know it isn’t good for my body in the long run. However, after reading some of the writings of food activist Gary Sacks, I began to think more about what I should be eating healthy foods because there will begin to be taxes on unhealthy foods that are made. A prime example is in his article, “Traffic-Light' Nutrition Labeling and 'Junk-Food' Tax: a Modeled Comparison of Cost-Effectiveness for Obesity Prevention,” published in Nature Publishing Group, Sacks states junk-food' tax, price elasticity’s were used to estimate a change in energy intake in response to a 10% price increase in seven food categories. Sacks advice about the junk foods, my breakfast foods, starting to get taxed 10% makes me start thinking about what I should be eating. The waffles/French toast sticks with bacon have been pre-cooked and made so that the packaging can be heated up in a microwave oven, but on the same note, the food items look to be similar to...

...how well the fast food industry is growing. Quick-stop food franchises like McDonalds and Burger King allow overworked moms to feed their children dinner in between soccer practice and dance lessons. While the fast food options may be a time saver, there are many downsides that can lead to an abundance of physical and mental health problems. Some of these potentially harmful problems could be early respiratory issues, depression, and acne. To avoid the negative effects of a bacon cheeseburger, it is important to find a healthy balance between junk food and healthier options. Implementing more education about healthy food choices in schools and making it readily available to overworked parents and their hungry kids could begin to end the epidemic....

Obesity

...body fat. It is different from being overweight, which means weighing too much. The weight may come from muscle, bone, fat, and/or body water. Both terms mean that a person's weight is greater than what's considered healthy for his or her weight"(Medline Plus, 2013). Being obese increases one's risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, arthritis, and even some cancers. This also increases the cost in our economy. "The economic costs from the excess morbidity and mortality attributable to obesity-related diseases go beyond health-care costs alone, perhaps most notable are the consequent losses in productivity" (Wang, McPherson, Marsh, Gortmaker, & Brown, 2011). We need to be focusing on more physical activity and better eating habits. This essay will include a literature review of three scholarly sources based on obesity, explain how academic knowledge impacts social elements of local and global communities, asses how principles of active citizenship could impact the issue of obesity within the next five years, as well as share two bogs on obesity. The first literature of review on obesity is focused on guidelines and treatment for the disease. There have been numerous treatment programs but none have provided a "cure." "Accordding to Brownwell (1982), if "cure" from obesity is defined as reduction to ideal weight and maintance of that weight for 5 years, a person is more likely to recover from most forms of concer than from obesity" (Krieshok & Karpowitz, (1988). ...GRE Analytical Writing ISSUE Essay Topic - 1 "Important truths begin as outrageous, or at least uncomfortable, attacks upon the accepted wisdom of the time." GRE AWA Analytical Writing ISSUE Essay Sample Solution – 1 “The opposite of a correct statement is a false statement. But the opposite of a profound truth may well be another profound truth.” ― Niels Bohr[->0] This is a proven fact that truth is the initial stage of progress. However, it is also believed that truth always starts away from the traditions and conventions. Therefore, people consider truths as attacks upon their beliefs, which people are following from ages. Truth also means some new facts that are unknown to us. People do not want to deviate from the facts, which they have learnt from their ancestors, and it is true to say that shedding ones dogmas is often difficult. They feel that it is an attack on their wisdom. If we look at the history of the world, we will find many examples where truth has generated commotions in the society. Different people have different views about the existence of God, life after death and origin of earth etc. For example, people took a long time to accept that the earth is round. Religious leaders and clergymen opposed this idea as it was against what they were teaching. Similarly, when Polish astronomer, Copernicus discovered that the earth goes round the sun and not vice versa, he was opposed by churches for many years. In fact he and his supporters were...

...A Preface of Quotations Whoever desires for his writings or himself, what none can reasonably condemn, the favor of mankind, must add grace to strength, and make his thoughts agreeable as well as useful. Many complain of neglect who never tried to attract regard. It cannot be expected that the patrons of science or virtue should be solicitous to discover excellencies which they who possess them shade and disguise. Few have abilities so much needed by the rest of the world as to be caressed on their own terms; and he that will not condescend to recommend himself by external embellishments must submit to the fate of just sentiments meanly expressed, and be ridiculed and forgotten before he is understood. --Samuel Johnson Men must be taught as if you taught them not; And things unknown propos'd as things forgot. --Alexander Pope Style in painting is the same as in writing, a power over materials, whether words or colors, by which conceptions or sentiments are conveyed. --Sir Joshua Reynolds Whereas, if after some preparatory grounds of speech by their certain forms got into memory, they were led to the praxis thereof in some chosen short book lessoned thoroughly to them, they might then forthwith proceed to learn the substance of good things, and arts in due order, which would bring the whole language quickly into their power. --John Milton Introduction Good writing depends upon more than making a collection of statements worthy of belief, because writing is intended to...
