Opium War

...Chinese Revolution take home essay The Opium War The Opium War lasted from the late 1830’s until 1860, encompassing a series of conflicts between China and the British Empire over trade and diplomacy. Basically what happened was China traded a lot of goods including tea, and in return China gained opium that the British Empire imported from India. However, when China realized that opium was ruining their nation through mass addiction, China outlawed opium. This lead to war with The British Empire, because the British didn’t want to be pushed out of this important trade that they had with China. The British ultimately won because they had a navy and China did not. Through these naval conquests the British acquired the small fisher island of Hong Kong and made it into a large trade port under British rule. Somewhat were some of the deeper issues of these wars and why were they unavoidable? Who stood to benefit most in this lopsided war and why didn’t the Chinese win? From the beginning, the ruling Tang dynasty opposed the importation of opium into its territory and actively discouraged its use by placing a stigma of immorality on those who used the drug. However, the British importers saw opium, as merely a product for which there was a strong demand for in China. Opium did not have anything to do with morality or lack thereof in the British mind. These two divergent viewpoints eventually...

How Significant Was National Resentment of Foreign Interference in Bringing About the Collapse of the Qing Dynasty 1911-1912?

...significant was national resentment of foreign interference in bringing about the collapse of the Qing dynasty 1911-1912? I believe that national resentment was extremely significant in bringing about the collapse of the Qing dynasty. Despite this however I believe that it was not the only factor in the fall of the dynasty. I believe that other reason such as the failure to reform, and the unequal treaties were also vital reasons for the failure of the Qing dynasty. I believe that the fall of the Qing dynasty started with ‘the unequal treaties.’ It's hard to get by when the country you need goods from does not really need to trade goods with you. This is what happened with Great Britain and the Qing Dynasty. There was a high demand for China's tea in Great Britain but a low demand for Britain's goods in China. Great Britain was in debt with China and they had to do something to get out. As a result, they turned to selling silver to make the imbalance better. China couldn’t care less about Great Britain's silver so Great Britain was still behinds in payments. When selling silver did not work they began selling opium. China's people became quickly addicted to the drug and traded silver, originally from Great Britain to get opium. Opium was illegal and China wanted the trade of opium to stop. China tried to make new restrictions against foreign merchants and ships and Great Britain did not like this idea and fought back resulting in the Opium War. Of course Britain came out on top because...

Economic Impact on Tea by Using Pesticides.

...Economic Impact on Tea by using pesticides. Cost effectiveness/ Effect of herbicides on cost of production There are different methods of controlling the pests. They are biological, chemical and manual methods. From them using Pesticides or the chemical method is more beneficial. Using pesticides is an economical way of controlling pests. When comparing to other methods the labor needed, time required is less. So the cost that is allocated as labor wages are not comparatively low and the productivity and efficiency are high. Pesticides require low labor input and allow large areas to be treated quickly and effectively. Of all field operations In general expenditure on weed management in tea accounts for about 10-14 % of the cost. Increase Yield In tea cultivation we use the immature tea leaves as the raw material. The leaf quality of tea is directly effect for the quality of the end product. With the pest and disease attack the leaves get damaged and the surface area reduced and it degrades the quality of the end product. Pesticide facilitate to reduction of pest contamination level. So with the application of the pesticides the pest get to inactive phase or killed therefore the yield will get increased. Therefore high portion of the harvest can be efficiently used for manufacturing process Quality of food Made tea quality is largely depend upon the quality of green leaves. Collegiate Promtion

...Collegiate Promotions distributes products that are marked to students and alumni of major universities. High-selling products include coffee mugs and T-shirts that bear collegiate logs. In order to distribute its products, collegiate promotions has adopted an independent sales representative model. The sales representatives work for themselves and are not actual employees of collegiate. They have independent contractor status. Becoming an independent sales representative is easy. An interested person pays a $300 fee to obtain catalogs and other literature needed to advertise and sell the line of products. The sales representative then begins to write orders for products. A sales representative can sell to anyone through any channel. This means that there are no protected territories, so several sales representatives are often working in the same geographic locations. Many representatives also sell through internet web sites. Collegiate promotions do not set an absolute price for its products. Instead, it uses a wholesale plus pricing strategy that allows sales representatives to sell within a relatively broad range. The range is normally 30 to 50 percent higher than wholesale. For instance, if the wholesale price of a coffee mug is $10, then the representative can choose to sell the mug at a price anywhere between $13 and $15. The sales representative receives a commission of half the amount charged over the wholesale price. If the mug sells for $13, the representative receives...

Sample Narrative Essay

...Sample Narrative Essay Granny As I glanced past the lit Christmas tree in the window, I could see endless rain pouring down and splashing into the large puddles that now filled the road outside my grandparents’ home. I shivered slightly and turned back to watch my grandmother sharpening her pencils with a razor blade and unpacking her watercolor paints and paintbrushes from their special travel box. She was wearing a loose lambswool cardigan that covered the top of her long, gently patterned skirt. Her lightly permed white hair was combed carefully across her head. I moved from the sofa to stand closer to her armchair and watched her rearrange the flower bouquet that she was commissioned to paint for her neighbor. I could smell a mix of the familiar waft of her Chanel N°5 perfume and the gentle but evident odor of her watercolors, but I couldn’t pick out any flowery smells. I looked at the painting, which was nearly complete, and saw her penciled signature at the bottom. It read “B.E. Cartwright” in beautiful printing. The “B.E.” stood for Barbara Eileen, although everyone called her Bobby. I moved back over to where I had been sitting, in front of the lightweight set of drawers that I was using as a hospital-on-wheels for my stuffed animals and dolls. Before settling down to her painting, Granny had cleared out the drawers for me and helped me wrap my little animals in the dry washcloths that I used as bandages and slings. I cradled my teddy bear, who suffered from a broken...

Strategic Marketing

...cultural aspects and norms of a society no matter how successful they have been in ages in their own country. What happened with Tetley in Pakistan is an interesting story; it failed to do well despite its established existence in the UK since 1837. Even in UK tea is preferred more over coffee which caters to a different cultural set. Similarly, tea is more of a South Asian concept, it is consumed in a totally different manner as compared to the UK market that is why flavored tea doesn’t strike us well into its consumption, the cultural phenomenon cannot be ignored, orange tea or strawberry tea and that too a hot beverage cannot relate to the Pakistani market. For any brand to be known well awareness needs to be created when it is launched while the key to success is based upon three important factors: • Differentiation • Doing something with an Impact • Creating publicity However, at the end of the day perception matters a lot, if the perceived positioning is tainted the brand image would have a negative impact. Tetley internationally has a trendy positioning, that comprised of innovation and younger, upbeat and lively brand. On the other hand, Lipton had been targeting the youth with their tea bags which is also going through a shift to target house wives and offices. Supreme had been successful because of its cultural association while Lipton too had been doing well till is associated with Basant, the rule of a good brand is to bring itself down to a...

Food Labels Week One Assignment

...Individual Check Point Understanding Food Labels Lisa Bryant SCI.241/Science of Nutrition August 16, 2013 Glenn Johnson My current eating habits are pretty simple. I have to always eat breakfast; I either eat a normal bowl size of raisin brain with about a cup of skim milk or stop by Burger King for two breakfast burritos with either tea or coffee. For lunch sometimes I either just snack around the office with popcorn or pretzels or whatever else my craving is for that day. However it’s usually something light, rather having something really heavy. Then for dinner I usually cook every night of the week which consists of one meat, vegetable, and a starch. When fixing my plate I usually get ½ a cup of each individual food. However even though I do place a little more than what I am supposed to eat on my plate, there are a lot of times where I don’t finish eating. I also have found myself not trying to eat any more food after I begin to feel full. When it came to the Super Tracker on what your body needs and then what they show what I had reordered, mine has been under on just about every single food group and nutrients. The refined grains are the only thing that was actually over that I had ate in those three days of my recording. As far as how many servings in each food group I ate in was also under as well. Grains in the three days I intake 6 ½ ounces, vegetables 2 ¼ cups, fruits I intake ½ cups, dairy was 1 ¼ cups, protein foods was 5 ounces,...

...Create a homemade scroll to announce the celebration: Use a program like Microsoft word to type up the invitation. A good size for each scroll is about 5x9. Print out the invitation and wad up the paper into a ball to make crease marks on the paper. Next fill a bowl with paper and tea bags. Unroll the paper and dip it into the bowl. The tea bags will dye the paper into a nice aged look. The amount of time you leave it in the bowl will determine how dark it gets. You can lay it out to dry or use a hairdryer to dry the paper. If you roll a tea bag over the paper, it will leave tea grains on it, adding to the old look. Next, glue a small wooden dowel or stick to the top and bottom of the paper and roll up. Use thread or ribbon to tie it shut. Dowels can be painted or stained and have cute jewels glued to them. The Laughing game- Everyone starts out in a circle facing each other.
