...rested partly with a professor and his teaching assistants. The issue is whether cheating is truly cheating when students collaborate with each other to find the right answer—in a take-home final exam. Harvard released the results of its investigation into the controversy, in which 125 undergraduates were alleged to have cheated on an exam in May 2012. The university said that more than half of the students were forced to withdraw, a penalty that typically lasts from two to four semesters. Of the remaining cases, about half were put on disciplinary probation—a strong warning that becomes part of a student’s official record. The rest of the students avoided punishment. In previous years, students thought of Government 1310 as an easy class with optional attendance and frequent collaboration. But students who took it in spring 2012 said that it had suddenly become quite difficult, with tests that were hard to comprehend, so they sought help from the graduate teaching assistants who ran the class discussion groups, graded assignments, and advised them on interpreting exam questions. Administrators said that on final-exam questions, some students supplied identical answers (right down to typo- graphical errors in some cases), indicating that they had written them together or plagiarized them. But some students claimed that the similarities in their answers were due to sharing notes or sitting in on sessions with the same teaching assistants. The instructions on the take-home...

...Dyslexia What Is Dyslexia? Dyslexia is an inherited condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell in your native language—despite at least average intelligence. Dyslexia is a neurologically-based, often familial, disorder which interferes with the acquisition and processing of language. Varying in degrees of severity, it is manifested by difficulties in receptive and expressive language, including phonological processing, in reading, writing, spelling, handwriting, and sometimes in arithmetic. Dyslexia is not the result of lack of motivation, sensory impairment, inadequate instructional or environmental opportunities, or other limiting conditions, but may occur together with these conditions. Although dyslexia is life long, individuals with dyslexia frequently respond successfully to timely and appropriate intervention. Cause of Dyslexia Dyslexia is an inherited condition. Researchers have determined that a gene on the short arm of chromosome #6 is responsible for dyslexia. That gene is dominant, making dyslexia highly heritable. It definitely runs in families. Dyslexia results from a neurological difference; that is, a brain difference. People with dyslexia have a larger right-hemisphere in their brains than those of normal readers. That may be one reason people with dyslexia often have significant strengths in areas controlled by the right-side of the brain, such as artistic, athletic, and mechanical gifts; 3-D visualization ability; musical...

...Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success HCS/504 August 6, 2012 John Dean Graduate Study Challenges and Strategies for Personal Success According to Linda Weston Kramer “Retuning to graduate school is a major decision in one’s professional life. Although there are many benefits to returning to school to earn a graduate degree, it is also very challenging” (Kramer, 2007, p. 158.). This essay discusses various challenges faced by graduate students, and strategies to overcome the challenges, from personal perspective. Personal and professional goals It is important to set personal and career goals before pursuing graduate study. Students need to discover the various courses offered, and select the one suit for them. This contributes a great deal of success because they choose what they want to, and where they want to reach. Goal setting and working toward achieving the goal is the key for success. My main long-term goal is career development. I want to complete my program within two years and find a job in Nursing/Informatics and go up in the ladder. When considering my short-term goal, I want to keep my GPA above 3.5, and acquire as much knowledge from this program by using the resources available. I want to improve my communication skills both written and verbal, and graduate study is the best platform for achieving that goal. It is important to prioritize the goals and choose the right path. Self-assessment and closely checking the measurable...

...utilized for the admission of international graduate students at the University of Tampa. Our team used a variety of resources that were made available to us to discover the way and the different steps included in this non-traditional transaction process. First, our team met with Maria Kast, who is the Assistant Director of the International Graduate Admissions for the University of Tampa. Maria Kast authorized us to talk about the admissions process at UT for the purposes of our class and gave us a tour of the facility that house the Office of Graduate and Continuing studies (OGCS). Jake, Florian and Ivy also conducted the interview of Iris. Iris is one of the graduate assistants dealing with the GPA calculation process for international students seeking acceptance in the graduate programs at the University of Tampa. She provided the team with insights as to how the process goes to calculate and compute the GPA of international applicants. She also explained how the NOLIJ Computer System is used by the Office of Graduate and Continuing Studies to store, retrieve, and verify information concerning international applicants. Iris also talked on our behalf to Juliana, another graduate assistant at OCGS and Juliana explained further to Iris about the storage of the data concerning applicants. Additionally, our team also had the opportunity to see the interface of the NOLIJ system and how it is set up. The NOLIJ System is used by OGCS to conveniently access and store all the files (transcript...

...Roodlyne Calixte March 5, 2014 Class: 10:00 am Prof: Fuller When I’m going to register I will choose the morning classes because I have to work in the afternoon. The Charlestown campus is more reliable and have student parking lot, that’s where I’m planning to take all my courses. The nursing division requires taking the pre-requisites, the college level in order to get accept into the program. Now I’m doing the general concentration and then to the college level. I’m qualified to receive financial aid and some books vouchers because I’m low income and single parent. I work Monday to Friday from two to nine pm; I normally do my homework or study at work if not too busy. I don’t have to worry much about my family beside my five years old son; he suffers asthma that can be tough to deal with. My two challenges during the school year are. First is to focus, as a single parent, being a student, to work and to provide is not that easy. Second is my math class can be little hard for me, I have to come with a solution by hiring a private tutor and meet for two hours every Tuesdays in order to be successful. I feel like I’m doing much better than before. I have a chance to sit down with an advisor and to go through the course program and to figure out which class that I’m going to need. My next plan is to register for nine credits or more. I enjoy coming to school at Bunker Hill, I will be spending another four years to finish with the program and maybe transfer somewhere...

...What style of leadership do I have? During the tutor period I learned a lot about my own leadership. For instance, I found out I am pretty good at listening, but I am sometimes still too enthusiastic and then forgot to listen to the project group. Also, when I am very enthusiastic about something, and other people do not agree with me, I find this really hard. These are still some points I need to work on. But, I like that everyone participates and gives their opinions. Information and discussions are very open to everyone. I really like to base my decisions not only on my own opinion, but also on others. Therefore, I have a democratic leadership style. What were my expectations beforehand? Of course I did have a lot of expectations before I started tutoring a project group. This is mainly because I have had a tutor several times myself in the 1st year. Because none of these experiences were very positive, I did not really expect the tutor period to go fluently and easy. I have had several tutors who showed up 1 or 2 meetings, and we never saw back again. That is why, before I started working with and leading the project group, I made a list of this what I didn’t like about my tutors, so it was clear what I was not supposed to do. On this list were the following points: • Being late • Never introduced themselves • Coming the first few meetings, and then not showing up anymore • Coming only the first meeting, asking for a good evaluation • Drilling their opinions upon...

...Freshman Seminar Due: 09-23-14 Tutoring Center Essay The NCC (Norwalk Community College) Tutoring Center, was designed to help students be successful and excel with their college career. This program is well designed to fit any student’s needs. It offers a variety of tutors for just about every class offered at NCC, and the tutors are prepared to work around the student’s schedules. The Tutoring Center is fully paid for by NCC, therefore no student needs to pay out of pocket or go to an expensive tutor. Every student should be able to use this program to enhance their college experience. When most students where asked about the Tutoring Center, they didn’t know what it was or what it offered. Upon further investigation of the campus tutoring center, I learned the tutoring center can help with any subject including accounting, business, CADD, computer science, ESL, foreign languages, humanities, math, science, social science, writing (any subject), and any other subjects upon request. The Tutoring Center is located in Room 110, West Campus. ...adventure that is even farther away from home can be a little trickier. Getting up and moving to a foreign place to start a new life takes courage. However, not even having an opportunity to return home for more than twice a school year, takes a different kind of courage. With having the limited ability to go home and see friends and family in other states, what is the next best thing to seeing your loved ones? Social media. Staying connected to other people is what makes humans human. The fascinating part about social media today is society’s endless amount of options to choose from. Connecting to friends and family is easier today than it was 10 years ago thanks to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and many more. Liz Chevalier, a Graduate Teaching Assistant from New York said that phone calls are a more personal way to get in touch with people she cares about, however there’s not always enough time for that. She adds, “Social media provides a way for us to keep in touch on our own time, and allows me to communicate what is happening in my life to all of my friends and family at once, rather than texting or calling each one individually.” The only downside to relying on social media and other telecommunications to keep in touch with loved ones is the lack of personality it holds, versus seeing and talking to people in real life. Maddie Barber, a sophomore from Colorado Springs, Colorado said it has been an adjustment not being able to communicate with friends and family on a day to day...

...Two Worlds Collide: The WC and Ms. Davis’ Comp II Class On May 29th I had the pleasure of visiting Ms. Lindsey Davis’ Composition II class to introduce our new Writing Center on South Campus (lovingly referred to as The WC by us tutors). New to the TCC community, I was thrilled to see the professional yet friendly environment she created in her classroom. As I lingered anxiously outside the door, I was put at ease as Ms. Davis joked good-naturedly with her students about course content. And that’s when I wanted to make a grand entrance like a hyped-up-five-year-old complete with cartwheels – POETRY! How could she have known? So my formal WC presentation turned into a genuine moment of connection between myself, Ms. Davis, and her clever, funny and engaging students. I am a voracious reader of poetry in all its contemporary forms, including all things hip-hop (and, yes, rap is poetry people)! I cannot wait to read their papers and get to know them better as they write for Ms. Davis. I left feeling energized about my role as tutor largely because of the positive environment they all had created. Good information, poetry and laughter. What a way to start the day! Even more exciting, as I wandered around campus after, her students recognized me and called me by name – awesome sauce – and brought up some good questions I can better answer now: Can you help me with my grammar? Funny you should ask! We will have our first annual Proofreading Workshop on June 18th at 1:30 p.m. in...

...It is my pleasure to recommend Jane Doe for admission to [name of program] at [name of university]. I am a fifth year Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley. I came to know Jane when I was her Graduate Student Instructor for Philosophy 111: Ethical Relativism, taught by Professor John Doe. The course comprised [short description of course]. Jane distinguished herself by submitting an exceptionally well researched and interesting project on ethical practices in ancient Greece. I would rank her in the top 2% of students that I have taught in the past five years in respect of her writing ability and research skills. Overall, Jane is highly intelligent and has good analytical skills. Her project on ethical practices in ancient Greece demonstrated her ability to come a detailed understanding of the ethical practices of another, very different culture, and to analyze the consequences of those practices for contemporary ethical theories. She gave a particularly interesting discussion of the difficult practice of infanticide, and showed both sensitivity and detachment when discussing its ethical consequences. Her overall intelligence is also reflected in her grades for the course, which were by far the best in the class. Jane has excellent communication skills. Her written work is both clear and concise, and interesting to read. She demonstrated her oral articulateness in the discussion sections that were an integral part of the course. Each discussion section focused...
