Team Communication Developing good communication skills throughout all levels should be the main focus if your intentions are to build, grow and maintain a strong team. Team communication is the messages that are sent and received within any group larger than two through verbal and nonverbal communication. Verbal communication is any message that is communicated with oral words while non verbal communication is any other aspect that transmits a message. Without team communication there is misunderstanding, confusion and not very happy members. Team communication allows members to express themselves and provide precise and comprehensive information. Effective communication provides a team a sense of safety and security. When a member feels the need to express his opinion, he/she will feel safe in the group. Effective team communication skills combined with appropriate body language can help anyone in leaving a mark behind with each interaction. Importance of Team Communication Team communication is important because it has the ability to either build the team or bring it down. When communication is ineffective in a group, the unity of the team will suffer. Where there is effective team communication, the group operates smoothly, motivated and with one common goal. In order for a team to communicate effectively, the members of the team should have a clear understanding of why effective communication is important, how to overcome any challenge, and what methods need to be implemented within their group to accomplish any given goal. Teams communicate successfully when all team members are expressing their thoughts, ideas and concerns, whether in agreement or disagreement of what was said. Communication is like engine oil: it needs to be applied to the machinery or the machinery will not start or, if it does, it will quickly falter and grind to a halt
