Teams are used in various situations such as the workplace, school, charities, support groups, and sports. Teamwork provides many advantages and helps people work toward a common goal. Establishing an effective team happens throughout several stages, and the team becomes stronger and more confident as the members work through the stages enabling them to succeed successfully as a team. Working in a team can be a very rewarding and satisfying experience. Working in a team can offer motivation and insight to others ideas. Teams offer a feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction upon successfully reaching the goals set forth by the team. Being a part of a team can enhance team members’ creativity. Team members are constantly bouncing ideas off other team members and adding additional ideas to the mix that maybe were not initially brought to the discussion. Some types of teams cannot function efficiently if each team member does not complete his or her assigned task. Engleberg and Wynn (2011) stated, “Working in groups may be the most important skill you learn in college,” (p. 3, paragraph 2). Companies are looking for people can work effectively and cohesively in a team setting. In the workplace teams are used for many functions. Teams can be established to support specific tasks. For example, if a company is trying to plan an annual fundraiser the company could form a team to plan the fundraiser. This team would be responsible for all aspects of the fundraiser from start to finish. Upon completion of the task the team would have a foundation for future events. Another example is if the company needs to undergo extensive maintenance a team could be formed to establish an action plan and to ensure the project is following the appropriate timeline. Team work skills are valuable in many aspects of work life. Most people will encounter team work at one time or another in his or her career. Establishing team skills early on and being willing to work within a team is very beneficial for many careers. Team work skills such as open communication, being goal-oriented, and focusing on the task at hand will enable teams to succeed.

Teams of the 21st Century

...Teams in the 21st Century Adrianne Villeda SOC/110 October 10, 2013 Sharlette Kellum University of Phoenix Teams in the 21st Century The most important skill individuals will learn in college is working in groups. Groups consist of two or more individuals grouped together by employers or instructors to reach a common goal. Group work is also used in other organizations that include political and religious organizations. Working in groups has advantages and disadvantages. In past experiences working in groups, some individuals were not able to complete his or her portion of the assignment by the deadline or not at all. These are not positive experiences to receive when working in groups. When an individual does not meet the deadlines set by fellow group members, it delays the whole group from completing the assignment. When an individual does not complete his or her portion of the assignment, his or her fellow group members are pressured to complete the assignment. Communication between group members is important to avoid these situations. Communication keeps group members informed and may provide additional help if needed. Employers use groups when the company has a special project or a business proposal. Employers gather individuals together based on the individuals skills or talent to successfully reach the goal. Teams in the 21st Century

...Teams in the 21st Cent SOC/110 November 4, 2013 Teams in the 21st Century From the time that you are a young child you begin to experience working in teams. Teams have become an important part of the 21st Century whether it be in education, athletics, or even at the workplace. In this paper I’ll discuss my experience working in teams, the advantages of being part of a team, and how having stronger team skills could really benefit you. I worked on my first team at the age of eight when I was on my first softball team. I never really knew what being part of a team meant until I played with those girls and that is an experience I have never forgotten even today. As I got older and in high school being part of a team became more common with the DECA club, Student Council, and the Dance Team. Each of these teams are all different in their own way but they each individually taught me skills that I still use to this day. Now that I am older I have realized that not everyone has the same idea or definition of what a team exactly is. As a student at the University of Phoenix working in teams is a big part of my school assignments each week. I have had some really positive experiences but there have been other times when my experiences were not so good. The one consistent problem I seem to have is getting everyone to do their part of the assignment on time or even at all which can be very frustrating at times. When I was younger it was fun to be part of a...

Teams in the 21st Century

...experience working with teams has been a day to day process for me either at work or in school. Working in a team either at school or at work for me has a positive and a negative effect. On the positive side of teams, you can always rely on other team members to help you out with areas you are having problems with. Another positive is that you have the ability of assigning work to each person on a team instead of completing all the work by yourself. The negative effect that sometimes or always comes up is other people on the team will rely on other team members to complete their part of the assignments. You are also relying on other team members to complete their part of the assignment for either a good grade in school or to make your boss happy that the team has completed the assignment or project by the deadline. Teams in a workplace are huge in today’s world. Just take a look at the Oakland Raiders football team. In order for a football team to be great they have to work together as a team to over come some of the obstacles that they face. “Leaders should not think of themselves as simply managers, supervisors, etc.; but rather as “team leaders.” (Clark, D. (2008) Growing a team para.1) What makes them a horrible team is only half of them work as a team and try to pick up the slack of the rest of the ones that do not show interest or do not care for the team. One of the best ways they can improve their team is to “Ensure that the whole team is involved in both indentifying...

Organizational Behavior at Whole Foods

...Theory X and Theory Y, human and social capital, the profile of the 21st century manger, Carroll’s Global Corporate Social Responsibility Pyramid and the seven moral principles. Whole Foods Market is a supermarket chain that functions through several completely maintained divisions. The supermarkets are located in the US, Canada and the UK. It is headquartered in Austin, Texas and employed about 72,700 people as of September 30, 2012, of whom 16,400 were part-time employees and 3,200 were seasonal employees (“Company Profile”, 2013). McGregor’s Theory Y Role at Whole Foods In 1960, Douglas McGregor wrote The Human Side of Enterprise, which framed two sets of molds about human nature. The first one is Theory X is unenthusiastic and negative. It assumptions people don’t like working and must be forced to do their work, avoid responsibility and have little motivation. As Kopelman and et al. (2012) stated “the manager who holds Theory X beliefs may unwittingly engineer a low level of employee motivation and (ironically) lament to a colleague that you can't get good workers nowadays” (pg. 451). Theory Y is the counterpart. In this Theory, mangers assume employees can be self-motivated, committed, responsible and creative workers. Whole Foods hires people that are well-trained who flourish in their workplace because they are happy with their jobs. John Mackey, the Cofounder and Co-CFO believes that “happy team members result in happy customers (Kreitner & Kincki, 2012). ...

21st Century Skills in Education

...In the 21st century, the world is changing and becoming increasingly complex as the flow of information increases and becomes more accessible day by day. The world is radically more different than it was just a few years ago, hard to imagine that it’s such a short period of time - the world and its people, economies and cultures have become inextricably connected, driven by the Internet, new innovations and low-cost telecommunications technology. A computer is a must, to be a successful student, in this modern age, all the required information and communication is accessible online. The education is structured for all students, regardless of background or community, so that they have the opportunity not only to reach their goals but to contribute the modern society as well, because education is not just an individual prosperity, because if you really think about it, it also serves a public good. The education acquired must ensure that everyone remains fully functional in such an increasingly demanding and knowledge-based society will require a constantly rising level of skills. The final result should be that education means more in terms of human survival and happiness. There is a huge connection - people who are better educated are more likely to be employed, have higher career satisfaction, live longer with improved health, have reduced participation in crime, participate in voting and volunteering, and are less likely to rely on public tax transfers or benefits...

Leadership for the 21st Century

...RENAISSANCE LEADERSHIP Transforming Leadership for the 21st Century J. Martin Hays and Choule Youn Kim THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY Key Words: |Leadership |Management Education |Future Trends | |Leadership Development |The New Millennium |Leadership Competencies | ABSTRACT Conventional leaders and leadership of the past are insufficient to meet the demands of the 21st Century. As we enter the new millennium, our world is characterised by unprecedented complexity, paradox, and unpredictability. Change is rapid and relentless. Today’s leaders face demands unlike any ever before faced. Standard leadership approaches that have served us well throughout much of history are quickly becoming liabilities. Conventional wisdom regarding leadership and many of its habits must be unlearned. The strong, decisive, charismatic, and independent leader and leadership we have idealised, strived to be, depended upon, and longed for may prove counter-productive in the new millennium and undermine a sustainable future. The challenges and opportunities of the 21st Century call for a new type of leader and leadership, indeed an entirely new and different way of thinking about leadership and of developing future leaders. This paper explores the nature of the nascent millennium and the leader and leadership qualities and capabilities...

Students of the 21st Century

...Crabtree Students of the 21st Century For this assignment I observed an “age group swim meet” in Springfield. I volunteered as a timer, which allowed me an up close and personal view of the kids I was observing. There were three separate swim teams participating in the meet, which totaled around 60-80 swimmers. There was 4 distinct age groups that competed: 8 years old and under, 9 & 10 year olds, 11 & 12 year olds, and 13 & 14 year olds. My nephew competed in the 9 & 10 group, and my niece swam in the 11 & 12 group, so naturally I focused more on those swimmers. This observation allowed me a great insight into many of the social customs and practices of a 21st Century student-athlete. At the beginning of the meet, I observed many swimmers exhibiting a great deal of anxiety. They frequently complained about the events they were signed up to swim, and felt unsure about how they would do in the events. Their postures were often hunched over or bunched up, and their tone was often muted. As the meet progressed and they realized that their reservations were unwarranted they became more boisterous, and confident about their next events. Their posture improved, and they began to exhibit more energetic postures and motions when lining up for their events. The swimmers were always very positive and encouraging when interacting with each other, weather they were on the same team or not. The would stand behind the starting block and cheer on their team mates, and congratulate them...

...What makes someone a leader? What qualities or characteristics does a good leader possess? What is leadership? These are hotly debated questions with a vast amount of varying answers. No matter what the answers are to these questions, one thing is certain, it’s not enough just to be considered a good leader. You also have to be effective as a leader. The leader of the 21st Century must have vision and be able to inspire the people they lead in order to be effective. In an effort to define what the leader of the 21st looks like, we interviewed key executive staff at our organization and asked what qualities and characteristics this person needs to possess. The responses were overwhelmingly the same. The leader of the 21st century must be flexible and able to adapt to change. They must be an excellent communicator and have an understanding of technology. They must be able to trust their staff and foster an environment where creativity is harnessed through collaboration. A leader must find a way to bring some levity to the work environment. Finally, an effective leader must be able to develop and articulate a vision that inspires their employees and business partners and communicates value. How does a leader go about using their vision to inspire people? An effective and inspirational leader begins with their vision and through collaboration, allows the vision to evolve in order to engage others. No one person holds all the knowledge and expertise. It’s essential...
