3. What role did the “Open Work Environment” play in the case?
Even though the team was global and the members worked in different locations, I think the “Open Work Environment” still played a role. If each member is working remotely they cannot be immersed in the company culture like they could be if they worked in the office. This is especially key for new hires on the new that do have the same context or understanding of the corporate culture that a tenured employee would. The program also limited face to face opportunities within each country’s team especially early on when they needed to be building relationships and trust. That being said, there is the potential that the program could be utilized to help the team function in the long term since the company has the technology and systems in place already to support the use of virtual teams.
Amy – Nice posting this week. In terms of the open work environment what would you suggest on how to get new to the company employees to understand the culture (assuming that they are going to be working remotely)? I agree with you that working remotely it is extremely tough for employees to become immersed in the culture but also I am not sure that without moving a significant amount to be spent by the employees inside an office, around other employees it will be something even possible.
I took the stance that the open work environment didn’t play that much of a role in the case, I believe that it what more cultural issues than just working remotely. In my current capacity I have a counterpart in Germany who works remotely and I have only met her once in three years but we get along very well (through email and phone mediums). On the contrary I work two cubes away from two other of my counterparts and constantly butt heads with each of them – and those two with one another as well. We are all from very different cultures so after learning more in this class I am much more understanding and cognizant of it, but at the same time our poor working relationship has nothing to do with being face to face and everything to do about our culture.

I like your idea of bringing all 45 people together as a means to build the team. Do you think it would be beneficial put some diversity into the teams by sending people from the US to work in the other countries mentioned and vice versa from the other countries? I was thinking this might be a good way to learn about the other culture and have those people return to their home country team to educate on what they learned. It might be a good way to bring diversity amongst the teams.

I think that is a great idea of bringing employees from the different global teams to another one of the teams and having them work together face to face to learn more about their processes and more importantly their culture. I want to say that I think one of our classmates did a similar program (Anna?) where she went for a small stint (six months maybe?) to another country as part of a rotational program with her country. I think this is a great way to get immersed in a different culture and learn more about your global counterparts. I also thought that James did a bad job at managing his team. In addition I thought there was blame to be given to the company for not realizing that James needed additional skills to manage a virtual global team and having someone coaches him. I personally think “that you don’t know what you don’t know” in situations like this. It is a bit like an expatriate assignment and all the assimilation training they need, managing a global team for the first time needs the support. What do you think?
I too also thought James was responsible for the HS Holding crisis. I wondered why there were no lessons learned from the first incident for this to happen again. I am thinking that they did implement a root cause analysis to drive permanent change to ensure it did not happen again. For a technical company they seem to lack some basic process skills. I think if they had lost the contract or been sued by the customer that someone like James would have been fired for impact. Do you think that would have been the right action? I don’t think it would have changed anything.
