Technological Fix

a) Examine the factors that may have influenced the global pattern of Internet use shown. (10 marks)

There are many factors that could have possibly influenced Internet use across the globe. One main factor is the strong correlation between how developed a country is and the amount of Internet they use. The North – South divide shows this, with countries such as Canada, North America and the UK having 61-80% of the population connected. Whereas, places such as India and Central Africa only have 0-10% of their population connected. Therefore the development of the country impacts the percentage of people connected (the richer the country the more people connected) due to them having more technology and having more money to develop and spend on technology.

Another factor that may have influenced the global pattern is whether the country is land locked. Land locked countries can loose out on internet connection as often fibre optics are passed over oceans and therefore land locked states/countries don’t benefit. In addition if these land locked places are also less economically developed they may not be able to afford to put in place different infrastructure to ensure they are connected. For example, Uganda is a landlocked country and is also an LEDC and therefore, cannot afford to put in place infrastructure to gain connectivity for Internet use as well as newly industrialised countries like Taiwan.

Finally, factors such as political issues may cause a influence in the pattern. Areas with high political issues such as North Korea have ‘no data’ available suggest Internet connectivity is not a priority. However some governments are using the Internet widely and have therefore begun to encourage citizens and encourage the idea of broadband across their countries. Due to the encouragement, broadband could become more widespread increasing the

...than five years, however there is a provision to increase dearness allowance every two years. The norms in fixing and revision of minimum wages were first recommended by ILC, 1957.[21] Revision of minimum wage rates is based on a ‘cost of living index’ and wages can be fixed for an entire state, part of the state, class or classes and employments pertaining to these categories. The fixation of wages is based on the norms mentioned and a wage board (different for different industry). Under the Minimum Wages Act, State and Central Governments have the power to fix and revise minimum wages. The act specifies that the “appropriate” government should fix the wages i.e. if the wages to be fixed are in relation to any authority of Central government or Railway administration then the Central government fixes it. However if the wage rate is to be fixed or revised for a scheduled employment, the respective state governments fix it. The Centre fixes the National floor level Minimum Wage that is lower than most states' respective minimum wages.[22] The ambiguity and overlap in the jurisdiction of both these tiers of government have caused debates and controversies. One of such debates revolves around fixing wage rates of MGNREGA scheme, an employment guarantee initiative by the Central Government[23] As per Section 5 of the Minimum Wages Act, 1948, there are two ways of fixing and/or revising minimum wages • Committee Method: Committees and Sub-committees are set up to make recommendations...

...Meditech Surgical Case GSCM 560 Keller Graduate School of Management Meditech Surgical Case 1. What are Meditech’s problems in introducing new products? In manufacturing ALL products? Meditech confronted an aggressive competition base on an innovating product. They were relatively new to the market. Their issue was based on failing to fulfill the great demand for the new product, the issue generated another obstacle which was not being able to deliver on time. Customers were expecting to have their product delivered when needed, but it took almost 6 weeks to receive the product. The genesis of this issue was based on the inability to create an effective forecast. There is not a perfect forecast, but it aids to visualize future demand. 2.  What is driving these problems, both systemically and organizationally? The issue is generated due to the inconsistency lead time for the component part. It is taking too long (2-16 weeks). Once again, the lack of forecasting is generating a false number which leads to inconsistency in the production. The estimation of the transfer requirement lose the actuality, leading to affect delivery time. The production inconsistency is higher than the demand difference. On the systematically side, the firm is going through a “panic” ordering period, with the lack of forecasting it is providing poor document support creating a false demand number. The decentralization is creating a bump on their production, in addition, there is not a standardized...

To my mind there is plenty of communication software which helps you to socialise with your friends, mates as well as with foreigners from all over the world not even leaving your room. On the other hand as any other appliance it has its own minuses. Let’s face the problem that computer becomes old – fashioned very fast after buying it and needs to be replaced. The point is that replacing a computer is quite expensive. The newer the computer is the more you have to pay for it. Not to mention, the costs you have to pay for fixing the computer if it breaks. In any case, not many people can fix computers so they demand quite a lot of money for repairing them. And computer may have to be fixed if it catches a virus for example. Viruses are all over the Internet; in fact your computer can easily get infected by simply entering some insecure web site. Viruses may cause lots of harm to your computer. They can...

...pinpoint that the accuracy of equipment reports was not precise, this something that should be changed. It is not always a good idea to have one person responsible for tasks that are intertwined, because mistakes are often made and never uncovered. The EA could in fact fudge the numbers when it came to physical inventory so that they matched the Non-revenue Report, and therefore he/she would make the company look better because there would be no lost inventory. Furthermore, we can see that having to update the Non-revenue Report daily, but not matching these to physical inventory until the end of the month can impact the timely resolution of equipment discrepancies. After looking at this key issue, there would be different alternatives to fix the problem. My recommendation would be to divide the equipment administrator’s work load into two jobs. This would cause some redundancy, which may be costly but...

The Switch in Time Saves Nine

...The switch in time saves nine One of the proverbs I find most useful in life is the one of Thomas Fuller – a British writer: “A stitch in time saves nine”. It is a well known proverb. It is frequently used in conversation. It passes on from one hand to another like a current coin A stitch in time saves nine” is an idiom, which is a phrase whose symbolic or intended meaning is different from the literal meaning of the words themselves.  Literally, it means that a single stitch (to fix a tear in a garment) will avoid having to make many more (nine) to fix a larger tear that it might cause/( A cloth which is torn must be stitched at once for otherwise the torn portion would increase in size and many more stitches would be required.) Figuratively, a little work today (one stitch) can save a lot of work later on (the nine stitches). For example, fixing a tile on the roof can stop the wind and water from getting in and causing a lot of damage to ceilings and so on. Or putting a little oil in the car engine can avoid a ruined engine, a ruined trip and an expensive repair.  We must at all times be well prepared for all things. The truth of the proverb will become clear, if we consider a few examples from day to day life. It is early in life that many bad habit is acquired and if the evil habit is not checked then and there, it grows and gives rise to many other evil habits. If a growing child tells lies, he should be at once taken to task so that the habit doesn't take roots,...

...different plug socket). Obviously still having my receipt, I decided to make use of the 1 year manufacturer’s warranty and send it off for repair through Phones4U which takes up to 28 days. Unfortunately for the time being I needed a spare phone so I delayed sending it off until yesterday when I finally got myself a cheap temporary replacement phone. On taking the Samsung Galaxy S3 to the shop I accidentally dropped it and now the phone has several dents along the edges and the LCD underneath has broken so nothing comes up on the screen any longer. Extremely unlucky, I know!! Anyways now with the broken LCD which isn’t covered by the warranty, Phones4U refused to have the phone fixed and Samsung have told me they will charge me up to £200 to fix it. For me repairing the phone is no longer worth it and so I will cut my losses and buy a new Samsung Galaxy S3 WITH a case! Basically this phone is for someone that is good with and can repair phones. The phone comes boxed with everything that came with it except earphones (didn’t think it was hygienic to include them). Other than the things mentioned, the phone works perfectly fine and the battery still holds a good charge. The screen is scratch-free as there is still a screen protector...

Not only does Anne Mulcahy show what it means to be a leader, she also showed what it meant to have great managerial skills. This paper is going to discuss what it took for Anne Mulcahy to fix Xerox. Despite the massive $18-billioin debt Xerox had accumulated, Anne Mulcahy had a vision and a plan to save the company she loved. In order to achieve her goals, she needed to get her co-workers on board, as well. In order to get her co-workers on board, she needed to have a well thought out plan of action. Anne recognized there was a massive debt looming over her company, and she also recognized that Xerox was about to go under. Despite the negative remarks people gave to Anne for trying to fix the company, she went ahead and fixed it. By doing so, Anne saved thousands of jobs. Before Anne Mulcahy became CEO, the previous CEO had put the company further in debt. His managerial skills were faulty because there was a lack of structure and there must have been a large amount of uncertainty. This can be assumed because he had only lasted 13 months as CEO. When there is a lack of structure and uncertainty, there will always be conflict. The conflict here is that the old CEO had done nothing to fix Xerox’s debt problem, did nothing to help Xerox grow, and instead, was a key cause in the...

...recipe for disaster in the first place. This lead to the customers of Intel to assume that the company was not completely trustworthy. Finally in November of 1994, Intel announced the flaw, although they have known about it for months. Intel did not handle this problem correctly. Intel should have at first notice of the flaw conducted a full recall of all the processors possibly affected. Not announcing a flaw of this level was a huge error on Intel’s part. They could have announced the problem and offer fixes to address the issues at hand. Waiting to announce this until months after the fact was a huge let down for customers. Customers expect that if a company finds a problem with their products that they inform them about it and provide a fix to the problem. Intel finally announces in December of 1994, that there would be a total recall, replacement, and destruction of all of the flawed processors. Something that should have happened months before. Finally, they have done right. Intel commits to purchase of all chips produced through the end of the year in January 1995. Intel sets aside 420 million dollars to cover costs of replacing all flawed processors upon request in mid-December 1994. If a flaw of this nature happened again today, with the economy as it is and they acted as they did back in 1994. Intel would more than likely be looking for a way to run. Today, Intel has competition that could very well take Intel customers. The only thing Intel may have to hold them up...

In the movie one character, states that some people say  “Oh that I do not look good enough” Meaning people want to change something about them in order to fit in society and belong. It’s all the stereotypes and images that society sets for people. The type of people that would want to change the way they looked were, people who were not disabled at all. Like some individuals do not need drugs to help them focus or surgery to help them look better they are fine the way they are. The movie emphasizes on that part where people who are not disabled see themselves as disabled because of any issues they have physically or mentally they see any flaws they have as a problem and would like to fix it. Also in the movie I had a better understanding of why would some people want to kill themselves. Some people who are disabled or feel disabled feel as if they do not belong to the society. I notice this because people make disability a problem for disabled people. Cutting out access to them. Ellis Kathleen states “that genes determine your future in this world”. Which means if you have good genes you would go far in life and not looked down upon society. In the movie “Gattaca” it shows what I mean with this quote when two boys one named Vincent and Anton were born.
