Technological progress plays a big role in society, for example Mac computers, Facebook, Instagram, sexting, bullying, and many more. Social and Technological progress has helped society but it also hinders it. These examples don’t always present bad things some are good. Like the new iPhone 6s with a heart rate monitor and state of the art touch screen ability but as this new software comes out the people who aren’t up to date or can’t adapt fast enough they will be lost in what we call the future. Such as the syphilis study at Tuskegee University. The reason for the study was to find out the natural history of syphilis in blacks. There were no treatments found for the disease so researchers told the men that they would be treated for bad blood and they gave them many incentives for participating in the research. What they really were doing was injecting the patients with the virus and a syphilis outbreak began it not only affected the men but their families to. But what the doctors failed to do was give them informed consent they didn’t tell them the real reason or event what the name of the study was they just lied and sold them false dreams. This is an advancement and also a restraint in society because, the doctors get to see the reaction to a disease in a community which can lead to a way to solve the issue. On the other hand, it hurts society because a lot of men lost their lives and families had to deal with the struggle and heartbreak also this could have led to legal changes because the doctors lied to the men. Also even though the doctors lied to Henrietta Lacks was a step back for society in the long run it can not only change society but the world and technological progress, because of her immortal cells what would happen If they were able to put those cells in a dead body and join it with an active brain and heart or if they can engineer their very own creation by using HeLa cells what could the possibilities hold?
