Sam Walton first started out with very little understanding of computers and software better yet a business. However, with the lack of knowledge that Walton did not have didn’t stop him one bit in building his dream company. Walton began building his company into a global leader of technology that it will soon become (Wail gum, T. 2007) Wal-Mart first opened the doors in 1962 in Roger Arkansas and that’s where Walton’s technology began to take off. The company officially incorporated as Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on October 31, 1969. By 1975, Walton had more than 125 stores and mass computers to control huge inventory and company information. Wal-Mart began putting registers in stores to better ensure the track of inventory for all of the companies that Walton owned. Now long after the store began using registers Walton came up with the ideal to use bar – codes on all products that are sold in Wal-Mart to follow the inventory and ensure that each product will be re-ordered as the products run low in the stores. By 1987 Wal-Mart had extended to the world’s largest private communication system in the United States (Wail gum, T., 2007). This communication linked all the Wal-Mart stores back to the central headquarters in Bentonville Arkansas to store all of the company information. Having this communication link in place it would ensure a better track of inventory and profits of all locations of Wal-Mart. Walton wanted to ensure that everyone received products from Wal-Mart all over the world by mail, telephone and the internet. Wal-Mart.com came about soon after this alone with the New York stock. Wal-Mart then became more international with this leading source of technology. Too many Wal-Marts are the world’s top retailer that uses technology to reinvent global supply chains. However, other companies from the around the world has now caught up with the other leaders of the world and forces stores to have more focus on their customers. Wal-Mart is no longer the leader and it now faces a crossroad in the technology field (Wailgum, T.2007).
Wal-Mart brings Innovation to the forefront to deal with suppliers and wholesaler. Wal-Mart power over the market is vital when it comes to bringing lower prices down due to innovation. Much of the innovation comes from over seas for cheaper products and service. The demand is mainly for the suppliers provided by cheaper goods, at a faster pace. This would be considered Wal-Mart’s innovation to keep the store in the forefront as the leading retailer in the world. However, according to Fredrick (Fredrick.), pharmaceuticals only make up approximately 4% of sales at Wal-Mart, but the convenience for customers on a one-stop shop to pick up all and any merchandise without making multiple stops. Wal-Mart has its own innovation in there IT technology department which does planning and revolution of the retail store as well. The ideal of barcodes was excellent for Wal-Mart because it has given it an extremely innovation and a good tool to plan for any turnovers of merchandise.
