...1 CHAPTER I THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction Laziness is a mental state of an individual when it lacks energy and/or the desire to perform tasks, which can have several causes (Steve, 2010). A lazy person is one who is not aware of their thoughts, emotions and actions. One who is aware of their thoughts as they occur, the feelings that pass through them and the actions they take, are the ones who are not lazy. So, one can be very active and still be very lazy, or one can be not active at all, but be very diligent. It is simply about being mindful and finely tuned in to the present moment (Mehta, 2007). The lazy man does not stand in the way of progress. When he sees progress roaring down upon him he steps nimbly out of the way. The lazy man doesn't pass the buck. He lets the buck pass him. We have always secretly envied our lazy friends (Morley, 1920).Well, every one of us knows this feeling: we have a lot of work to do but a momentary feeling of laziness, or even a habitual state of pure laziness prevents us from getting motivated to perform our tasks. We do not feel energized and just don´t want to do particular activities, either because we lack the inspiration or are not encouraged enough to start working. there are types of lazy people: those who are thrill seekers who wait until the last minute so that they get into a euphoric rush when they finish the work at the very last possible minute, those who avoid work simply because they are too scared to fail. Doing...

...What affects technology have had on our lives? Technology is a major part of both our professional and personal life whether if It’s at work, school, or home. According to Gebski’s article, he argues that “Technology is now so integrated with our lives that going without it can cause severe anxiety for some and It’s not hard to see why Technology has taken over” (2015). I completely agree with Gebski, because we depend so much on technology that going a day without it is impossible. With the level of technology use in our society “Modern technology has become such an important facet of our lives that without it, the world would be radically different” (Asset AmeriCorps Blog, 2011). In addition, technology has made our lives so easier because...

...Technology and Social Change Steven D. Smith SOC\100 March 28, 2016 Dr. Shayne Aloe Technology and Social Change Technology plays in iatrical role in society. Technology has a big influence and the advancements in technology can cause social change. Even though we create advancements in technology, even the society that makes those changes is impacted as well. This paper will address the impact of personal computers, cell phones, and the Internet on society. This paper will also review technological developments that relate to the three major sociological perspectives such as; equilibrium model, digital divide, and cultural lag. The use of computers has increased dramatically over the years, and the use of computers has changed the lives of many people and how they do things. Computers are a very complex tool, but they are also very useful. Computers can be used for many different functions such as; keeping in touch with distant relatives and friends, research, conducting business, doing homework, or for entertainment. Computers are a very useful piece of technology that most people have and use at home or work. Being on the computer can take away from being productive and cause procrastination for most. Everton, Jolton, and Mastrangelo (2006) state, “Computers have undoubtedly changed the way people work, but they have also changed the way people avoid and sabotage work” (p. 730). The Internet ties personal computer and smartphones together which has affected current...

...The time is 8:45am. I am just starting this assignment that was tasked to the class a week ago. I do not have any valid excuses for my procrastination. Unless I can get away with the “I was distracted by technology” excuse. The technology has made it difficult to accomplish “intellectual tasks” on my one day off from work or school. I guess in a way technology has made me dumber. However, I'm not sure if technology has made us dumber. I watched the PBS debate titled Is Technology Making Us Smarter or Dumber?. I feel like team dumber made a couple great points on technology making us dumber. For example, they mentioned how Google caters it's search responses to what we have already searched. Google tells us what we want to hear. The bad thing is that because Google does this we can not open up our world views as easily. They argued that most people take what they see on the internet at face value and don't bother to see any deeper. They are basically saying that we are too lazy to research and don't bother to search beyond the first page of Google search results. Team dumber mentioned the GPS. One of the members mentioned how we rely...

...Essay 1: “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” summary and response Summary: In the article of “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet is changing the way our mind works and has some negative effects on our lives. In the article of “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet is changing the way our mind works and has some negative effects on our lives. The article begins with that the Internet is the excellent resource where we can find whatever we want for everything, and we are becoming more and more dependent on it in the field of writing, reading and so on. Afterwards, Carr claims that it has a large distraction on our mind, and we even cannot concentrate on a long reading material. As he said, technology is becoming more important than people. In the end, he also tells us that Google is trying to invent an artificial brain to replace our "slow" brains that we already have. In the article of “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”, Nicholas Carr argues that the Internet is changing the way our mind works and has some negative effects on our lives. He views the idea that the Internet is an obstacle for individuals to think deeply, and it is rebuilding our mind and memory. As Carr said, nowadays, it is so difficult for him to focus on a long paper; instead, he always spends a lot of time on the Internet. In the past, the writers like him should stay in the library to study for several days, but now, because of the Internet, it just...

...downfall or a tradeoff. In technology for example, we have access to thousands of ideas that no one would ever be able to remember them all. We have machines that will do our laundry, keep our food warm or cold, which are both almost necessities in daily life. But then we also have some of the most powerful machines being the ones that ca gives you the most information, entertainment, and have the ability to engulf us for hours until eye soreness finally becomes too much to handle. Not only do these things make us stupider, they also can change the way we perceive the world we live in. The internet can change us. This is what Author Nicholas Carr believes. Carr is the author of, “Is Google Making Us Stupider”, he worries that google is rotting our brain to change how we think and perceive information, much like a robot. He voices his concerns with Google and the internet, I attempted to remediate and few of his paragraphs in this article to see If I could give some more insight on his pre-publishing thoughts. I created a Facebook profile for Carr because he would’ve too, he thinks public information is the fastest way to gain a popular opinion. I used Facebook as a way to try and show his prewriting before editing through his paper, giving some new...

...Thousands of cooking recipes, tutorials, are available; in fact, the list could go on and on and never end. These vast amounts of advantages definitely have the power to overshadow the adverse side of this ingenious invention. Just like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I believe that for something to be beneficial or detrimental, it depends on the user. Carr’s thesis about Google making us stupid is not completely true. He has a valid point that now people do spend less time deep reading and only go over to look for relevant things, but I don’t understand why that’s a bad thing. Today the world is very fast paced with everything on fingertips and the amount of information available on the internet doesn’t give one the excuse to not go over everything they could get their hands on to do an affective research. If one stopped to ‘deep read’ each and every single article they came across on the web which related to their research, they would never get around to writing anything. The easy accessibility of information on internet and advanced search engines like Google leave little room for deep thinking...

...Ashley Fuell Marissa Campbell English 121 May 6, 2014 Is Texting Making Us Dumb? Almost everyone I know over the age of twelve years old owns a cellphone and uses it to communicate through text message. Add to that the large amount of people who use email and social media, and it’s clear that we depend a lot on technology to communicate with each other. In order to make these methods more efficient and immediate, a form of tech speak has developed and due to frequent, constant use, has begun to creep into the school classrooms. Tech speak is a form of slang that shortens words to make text messaging faster. It also includes emoticons, a way of using punctuation marks to make a picture of a face or whatever the user wants to form. Technology is making us bad spellers with the use of spell checkers and autocorrect. This texting lingo is also damaging our youth’s written language skills because students are finding it increasingly difficult to switch between using tech speak and proper grammar. Further, texting is hindering students’ abilities to focus in class, hurting their grades. Finally, college entrance officers are reporting application essays with tech speak and acronym shortcuts being submitted by prospective students that end up causing the student to be denied entrance to the college. Tech speak is becoming increasingly more evolved and complex in its own way. Students who use tech speak, or texting lingo, tend to ignore punctuation and capitalization rules, use...

...Is Technology Good for Us? I still remember the days of having dial-up Internet, not being able to search the web if someone was using the phone, but now we have high speed Internet, fios and Wi-Fi. If you ask me, technology has come a long way. But if new technology, such as the Ipad, were given to schools, would it be helpful for students? My feet are on both sides. Thanks to technology, we are able to grasp information easier and faster, but in return we are becoming lazier and losing the ability to think critically. Also if such technology were to be used in the classrooms, it may cause a distraction to students or even teachers. We also have to consider the amount of money that is going into programs like this because things like iPads are not free and fairly expensive. Technology, over the years, greatly improved and has been helpful for us. With technology, you are able to find information at a much faster rate than if you were to look for it in the books. For a book, you would have to search through page after page, reading almost everything to find what you are looking for. Whereas the Internet you can search by key words and it would show up faster. The Internet also has an unlimited amount of information and a book is restricted to what is written. For example, books are only hold certain amount of information, the words written down on the pages, whereas for the Internet, you are able to look into more information about subjects are studying such as Biology,...

...i Internet is Making Us Dumber During the past two centuries the world has witnessed an explosion of technological advances. There has been much debate about the Internet, and specifically about the effects of the wed search engine like Google. Many respected writers, a plethora of articles and books have been published lately arguing both sides of the issue. While many writers claim that the internet has a negative, damaging effect on the brain and cognition, others see the benefits of technology in helping us achieve the previously unachievable and freeing us from many time-consuming activities. Based on our research and personal experience, we have found out several reasons to support the argument such as the negative impacts on human behaviour, degeneration of human abilities and contradictory information. Therefore, we strongly agree that the sheer amount of information that we have access to nowadays is actually making us dumber. Information that we have access to is making us dumber because of contradictory information. Information can be defined as facts or details about a situation, person, or event. According to Wikipedia (2013), as the world moves into a new era of globalization, an increasing number of people are connecting to the internet to conduct their own research and are given the ability to produce as well as consume the data accessed on an increasing number of websites. Users are now classified as active users because more people in society are...
