Introduction/summary
Speaker from Alabama
Brian Stevenson, grew up with exposure to slavery founder + executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative
Childhood

I viewed the TED Talk given by Bryan Stevenson, who, along with having second-hand experience with slavery and its victims while growing up in the deep south, is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative, an organization whose focus is to combat discrimination within the justice system but also strives to lower prison populations, reduce sentences for nonviolent offenders, and abrogate capital punishment. The topic of his presentation is a call to action against the current divergence of equal justice by race and wealth and is accomplished with a strong statistical basis and a punctuation of anecdotes from his childhood and early career that highlight his experience in dealing with discrimination.

Something I learned
1972, 300000 people imprisoned, now 2.3 million, 7 million on probation/parole
⅓ black men is in jail or parole
34% of African americans cannot vote in Alabama
Life in prison for kids
1 out of 9 people on death row are innocent
California spends $1b on death row per annum
11x more …show more content…
I had not been aware of the sheer proportion of our population that is currently imprisoned and, in particular, the number of whom are African American. According to Stevenson, more than 2.3 million Americans are serving sentences with another 7 million on parole or probation. //Insert proportion of African Americans More alarming to me than that, however, is how Stevenson described how certain states have potentially used this //proportion to manipulate their voter demographic. For example, in Stevenson’s home state of Alabama, 34% of the adult, male, African American population is not able to vote, which creates a severe under representation of their

Ted Talk Summary

...Based on the Ted Talk by Dr. Irvin Waller in was very interesting to listen to all his ideas and points made about the overall justice and corrections system and the US and compared to other places around the world. Overall there were a lot of great points that I agreed with and others not as much. Overall I agree with Dr. Waller on the idea that we do incarcerate a lot of offenders for long periods of time and the idea the “hot spot” policing is effective. One that seems doubtful and unrealistic is the model he presented like doctors to diagnose offenders and provide accurate treatment. One idea I think that is wrong is the idea the way the US is spending their money.     Based on the information from the National Association For The Advancement Of Colored People, “The United States makes up...

...Summary: Joshua Foer, a science journalist, started his talk by instructing the audience to close their eyes, and visualize the very strange story he was telling. This story acts as an introduction into telling us about his journey into the bizarre world of competitive memorizing. The event, Foer says, includes a “bunch of guys and a few girls of widely varying ages and hygienic upkeep memorizing hundreds of random numbers by looking at them just once” (TED talk). Foer investigated a competitive memorizing competition that is held every spring in New York City called the United States Memory Championship. He explained that the competitors were memorizing hundreds of random numbers by just looking at them once, and remembering the countless...

Argument Analysis: The Ted Talk By Dave Merlin

...The Ted Talk explains and assesses how easy it is to appeal to citizens and get them to change their mind based on information that is curated to sway people to believe certain things. Dave Merlin’s focus is political parties. Although, he is from Canada most of what he talks about is universal and can be applied to most places in the world, especially in America. Dave Merlin exposes and tries to get people to realize that not everything they read is true and most of it is just propaganda used to make them feel a certain way about something specific or in this case, politicians. Dave believes that apathy does exist and people do care, however he believes that we live in a world that discourages involvement and puts obstacles in the way to further prevent and discourage that involvement. He gives many examples of the obstacles and barriers that he mentioned. He uses an ad as his first example. Dave points out how the ad is impossible to read and states how the information you need is at the bottom and in a very small and unreadable font....

...they cannot either centralize authority or be very prescriptive to the line managers as to how to run their operations. As a consequence, they design a new control system that makes each operating department a profit center. With coaching of department managers about good business practices, they manage the business on a decentralized fashion and provide the department managers with incentives for generating good results. The case raises a number of issues that managers face in setting up such a decentralized control system. These include issues of autonomy, cost allocations, and transfer pricing. Suggested Assignment Questions 1. Did AirTex need a new control system at the time of the takeover? 2. Evaluate the control system that Frank and Ted implemented. Should anything have been done differently? Case Analysis Does AirTex Need a New Control System? A reasonable way to start the discussion is to ask, “How is AirTex doing?” Exhibit 2 in the case shows the income for the 4 months immediately preceding the purchase. These Professors Kenneth A. ...Title: How I Met Your Mother, season 2 episode 7 – The Crazy Eyes (Swarley) DESCRIBE THE 20 MINUTE ACTION: Ted, Marshall and Barney are sitting in a coffee shop where they figured out is not as fun as sitting in a bar. While drinking their coffee, Ted notices a heart on Marshall’s cup. He and Barney assume that coffee shop girl has a crush on Marshall. They are encouraging him to invite her on a drink. Marshall brags about how she likes his pumpkin jokes. That in Ted’s opinion can mean only two things – either girl has never heard a joke before, or has a crush on Marshall. Marshall is, however, not convinced. Ted and Barney try to prove him that heart next to his name is meaning something. When doing that, Barney discovers that his name is not written correctly. Instead of Barney is Swarley. He realizes this name will stick to him. Second scene takes place at Robin’s apartment. Robin is girlfriend of Ted. She is on the phone with her mother, but she is willing to talk to Ted even though her mother is still speaking. Ted tells her about Marshall and his date and that he helped him get the girl. Robin discovers that look, that made her sleep with Ted was fake. She can’t believe she fell for it until Ted reminds her that she has a familiar look for seducing. Lily, Marshall’s ex-girlfriend appears with plans for next evening. She is considering inviting Marshall too, but Ted tells her that he is busy. He compared Finland to each state within the America. Finland does not use any standardized testing; yet they are consistently above average. What Is Poop

...Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk on “The danger of a single story” emphasizes the problems with a story being told from just one perspective. Due to stereotypes many misconceptions have occurred due to only one side of the story being shared. In Adichie’s speech, she uses herself as a main example. Many people in America saw Adichie as an impoverished, uneducated Nigerian woman who was lucky enough to get out of Africa and start a better life in America. This viewpoint is not the blame of the individual, but the media the individual has been exposed too. The stereotypical African person is an untrue representation that most people in America have. Learning about the world is good for becoming more diverse, but if the information shared is one sided the experience may become limited because the person learning will become misinformed on a certain culture, person, or beliefs. Adichie’s goal in her speech was to educate the viewers on the problems with only hearing one side of a situation. In her speech she gives personal examples of situations where a person has assumed Adichie is a certain way due to stereotypes the person has learned. Adichie also shares personal examples of when she has assumed something about another person due to the stereotypes she has picked up over time. Adichie explains her speech that even though the stereotypes people have of certain cultures are misrepresented sometimes, still hold truth to some extend. Again, Adichie uses personal example to back...

People who do this should put themselves in the role of the spamee and consider how it might feel if the roles were reversed. Let’s just think of it as the Golden Rule of Networking and to be an effective networker, it’s a rule you must follow. What it comes down to is this: You must discover what you can do, offer, or share that ingratiates you with others and makes them genuinely look forward to your next meeting. Doing this consistently brands you as someone of interest, someone who is truly worth 1 knowing. As you consistently treat people in this manner, it's no accident that they look for opportunities to reciprocate. And it all starts with the “small talk," the key to...

...Listening summary/response Summary Duckworth (2013) in her talk “The key to success? Grit (研磨)” says that grit is the key to success. She explained that she change the job to teaching seventh graders Math in New York City public school when she was 27 years old. She found that I.Q was not the only difference between her best students and worst students. In her opinion, the Math of seventh grade is hard, but she is convince if they work hard enough. Then, she concluded that ability to learn quickly and easily was not only one thing to influence the performance of school and life. So, she came back to school and started learning psychology. She and her team a researched on who is successful person in super challenging situations (for kids and adults). Finally, she found that the most important character trait (特性) to influence success was grit. Grit is sticking with your future, and working hard to make the future a reality. She made a survey about the grit influence of students in high school, and she found the students who have strong girt character can easily graduate. She was shocked that we know a little about grit, and we do not know how to build grit in kids, but according to the data, we know that grit was not related to the measure of talent. The best idea was building grit in kids in something called “growth mindset.” This is an idea developed at Stanford University by Carol Dweck. When they learned this method, they can preserve if they failed, because they believed...

Discovering Ancient Climates in Ocean & Ice

...Discovering Ancient Climates in Ocean & Ice | Rob Dunbar | Summary What Dunbar discussed in this lecture was sea level rise, ocean warming and ocean acidification. He also explained the environmental conditions revealed by marine sediments and the negative effects that carbon dioxide has on the ocean. It was easier for me to understand how sediment works and how he went upon researching it. When he talked about carbon dioxide and the negative effects it has on the ocean I was shocked. I did not know greenhouse gases could affect shells and corals in the ocean. I also did not know that it can decrease marine life. He also talked about the dangers of low sea level islands and how high sea level waters can affect them. Dunbar also explained how El Nino affected the ocean. He briefly explained that El Nino warmed up the ocean by a few degrees Celsius and temporarily changed the world’s climate. Furthermore, What I also found interesting was how he sampled corals. He would sample corals to figure out the temperature of the ocean. Dunbar would use a diamond drill, send fragments of limestone back to a lab and analyze the temperature of the ocean. In conclusion, the lecturer explained the danger of how sea level rise can affect low sea level islands, he talked about ocean warming and he talked about how acid affects the ocean Reflections One idea that I found interesting about the lecture was concerning billions of tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse...
