...The Self-Concept is a complicated process of gaining self-awareness. It consists of mental images an individual has of oneself: physical appearance, health, accomplishments, skills, social talents, roles, intellectual traits, and emotional states and more –all make up our self-concept. The development process begins at about six or seven months of age. The child begins to recognize “self” as distinct from surroundings. They stare at anything they see, including their own body parts; hands, feet, toes, and fingers. As they grow, their sense of identity expands through interactions with others –creating self-esteem levels that become the “booster” for the ability to interact. As people’s outcomes in life depend heavily on how others perceive and evaluate them, they are motivated to convey certain impressions of themselves to others and to refrain from conveying other, undesired impressions. Thus, no matter what else they may be doing, people typically monitor and control their impressions, i.e. a process known as: self-presentation. A great deal of human behaviour is, in part, determined or constrained by people’s concerns with others’ impressions and evaluations of them. ’I’m too short’’. ‘’I’m too tall’’. ‘’I would be happier if I were skinnier, fatter, had bigger muscles, smaller ears, had straight hair, curly hair’’. Do any of these statements ring a bell? Are you used to demoralizing yourself? If so, you are not alone. As a teenager, our body changes dramatically...

...framework in documenting gender portrayals in teen movies and investigating the influence of exposure to these images on gender-based beliefs about friendships, social aggression, and roles of women in society. First, a content analysis of gender portrayals in teen movies was conducted, revealing that female characters are more likely to be portrayed as socially aggressive than male characters. Second, college students were surveyed about their teen movie-viewing habits, gender-related beliefs, and attitudes. Findings suggest that viewing teen movies is associated with negative stereotypes about female friendships and gender roles. Research examining the effects of media exposure demonstrates that media consumption has a measurable influence on people's perceptions of the real world, and, regardless of the accuracy of these perceptions, they are used to help guide subsequent attitudes, judgments, and actions. For example, these results have been yielded for viewing media representations of race,1 the mentally ill,2 and the elderly.3 Past research additionally indicates that watching televised gender portrayals has an effect on individuals' real-world gender-based attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.4 Based on this research, and the tenets of social cognitive theory, it would be expected that consumption of teen movies would have an analogous influence on audience members' gender-based attitudes and beliefs. Despite the popularity of teen movies, the influence of such films on emerging...

...English 379 March 12, 2013 In the movie easy A, a teen comedy, the main character Olive is initially presented to the viewers as the virginal and feminine high school student who dresses like the average high school student, mostly in pants, and turns out to be transformed into the sex object/pin-up girl to resemble her counterparts in the movie. One being her best friend Rhi and the other Marianne, both whom which throughout the entire movie are always in very short skirts and/or extremely revealing tops, especially Rhiannon. Nonetheless, the one normal, dressing female in the movie, Olive, is then in turn forced and presented as a skank, a whore, and a home wrecker. Although one of the central themes of the movie is the loss of virginity, there are no sex scenes and it does displays a witty, contemporary, modern day spin on Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel, The Scarlet Letter. Moreover, the message depicted throughout the movie is that an innocent, little white lie can get blown out of proportion and that teenagers in general are concerned of how others perceive them in their day to day lives. The movie starts off with Olive being portrayed as a virginal, down to earth, average high school student with no cares in the world but is hastily transformed into the slutty female character very commonly used throughout Hollywood films to depict females nowadays. When a little white lie about losing her virginity meant for her best friends ears only gets out of hand and...

...Stephanie Alexander Professor Brendan Praniewicz English 205 17 Aug. 2013 Everybody Say, “Yeah” Imagine the typical day of a young person in the 21st Century. She gets in her car and immediately turns on her favorite pop radio station on the way to work. Her friends from college invite her to a party after her shift ends, and she invites a few friends as well. In the car on the way to the party, while chit chatting over upbeat background music, one of them exclaims, “Oh! I love this song!” One of them turns the volume up and they all sing together to the catchy tune and the easy words of “Young, Wild, and Free” by Wiz Khalifah, “Roll one. Smoke one. When you live like this you’re supposed to party…” This line in the song is extremely easy to learn because it has been repeated several times in less than three minutes, and is set to the sound of a catchy tune. Perhaps pop music has been designed to fit into this modern lifestyle, where one is always on the go, and wants to stay active and energetic. Who has time to really listen to what the song is saying if it has rhythm and is easy to sing along to? Without listening, we tune out the important form of expression that is musical lyrics, and this drop in emphasis encourages a lack of investment in song composition. American Pop music’s language is digressing to the point where it is more offensive, repetitive, and shallower than ever. Offensive language in modern pop music is becoming more normal. The modern American...

...pretty enough or skinny enough to comply with society. Acts such as these can be a real self-esteem dropper, so as Julia launched her campaign the girls supported her whole-heartedly and she won. Another offer was made other than one unaltered magazine being produced a month, the other promise was that Seventeen would offer their readers to give feedback about the new edition and to celebrate beauty in all of its diverse shapes, sizes and colors. These girls had started a revolution in the way girls see themselves in the magazine industry. The girls are now asking Teen Vogue to do the same. This year Vogue pledged to not allow under aged models or models with eating disorders work with them. Vogue is also asking their designers to design more realistic clothes for models. It’s time for an end to the digitally enhanced, unrealistic “beauty” we see in the pages of magazines. We are demanding that teen magazines stop altering natural bodies and faces so that real girls...

...My Prediction for Season 2 flash story line includes Futures end influences and a Wally West Flash! Here is how I have come to that conclusion and then some. In Tuesday night's episode of The Flash during the body snatcher scene Eobard says to Harrison; "In the year twenty twenty (five years from now) you and your wife Tes Morgan successfully launch a particle accelerator that changes the course of history". Eobard accelerated that timeline, to the year 2015 (technically 2014, and they should have had the line read 2019). Five years from now, the DC Comic Universe plot line for Futures End is as follows: "Reeling from a war with Another Earth, leaving the world unprepared for an approaching evil that threatens to destroy the future can a time traveling Batman (beyond)." Now simply begin to replace batman with "Can a time-traveling Barry Allen, help a massive cast of the DCU’s finest avert the impending apocalypse caused by the changes to the timeline Eobard Thawn the Reverse Flash set in motion after the eventual survival of Barry's mother? That means season two should be getting heavy doses of influence from the Futures End storyline. For the new as-yet-unnamed show, they are casting characters like HawkGirl, so this gives some credibility to a "massive cast" I digress, now since Harrison wells and Tess Morgan will be the cause of the S.T.A.R. labs explosion in 2020, we should see some new superheroes from older cast members, like Cisco becoming Vibe and Mrs. Katlin snow becoming...

... The Jon Lewis passage from his book The Road to Romance and Ruin: Teen Films and Youth Culture focused on several aspects of the portrayal of teen culture in cinema. Initially summarizing the viewpoints of several authors of sociology and media on the relationship between cinema, youth and their relationship with one another, the article goes on to describe Lewis’ personal viewpoints on central themes common within most films about teens. A main focus of what seems to be standard for all teen portrayals is the idea that the separation between teens and adults, or “teen alienation” is the basis for the teen attitude of rebellion and general angst. This attitude comes from the teen’s inability to come to terms with the ending of an idealistic and easy childhood, and take on the challenges of adulthood. This concept is the general basis for most other cinematic themes in teen-based films, including those of Armageddon, suicide, homicide, and masculinity crisis. Each of these topics is portrayed with the attitude of apathy among teens; that the world and life itself is destined to end anyway, and that caring is futile. Films like these typically portray teens as unwilling to conform to the pressures of society and looming adulthood, and that their indifference often leads them down paths of destruction, for themselves and others. The classic 1955 film, Rebel Without a Cause, is the quintessential “teen struggle” film, displaying almost all themes discussed within the article...

...conflicts’ (Worland 2007, pg15). This assignment will look at the generic conventions a coming of age/ teen film (what we expect to see), aspects such as typical situations, stock characters, style, icons and setting. In terms of themes in coming of age (teen films) (subjects that are dealt with within the text) they tend to focus around, first love, rebellion, and conflict with parents, teen angst or alienation. In terms of what we would typically see within the genre ‘teen/coming of age’ film it is in the interest of the target audience and making the plot relatable and focus on their interests. The first trailer to be analysed is “Mean Girls”, a teen movie released in 2004. The style of “Mean Girls” is glossy, the use of high key lighting creates an expensive look and the contrast of high/bright colours makes the film more vivid and eye catching the use of the bright colours encourages a cheerful and young audience. In the first shot we see ‘Kady Heron’ in class she looks bland and has no character and is introduced as the new ‘student’ which is typical for the plot of a teen (coming of age movie) and the non-diegetic sound tracking playing in the back background gives us insight into the genre as we see both a stock character and a typical situation with a pop soundtrack clearly illustrating the theme of coming of age. Surrounded by stock characters that feature in a teen movie; teachers, students ect, she is placed in a typical setting, a class room where we see a chalk...

...Saturday detention for each of their mischief, and write an essay “Who you think you are?”. Along with the fact, that this group is so ill-assorted, you can’t even get how they all appeared to be in the same place, the Shermer High School library. This small mixed group consists of jock Andrew (Emilio Estevaz), who is insane about sports; nerdy Brian (Antony Michael Hall), whose aim is to get straight A’s at any cost; princess Claire (Molly Ringwald), who conceitedly trying to prove that she does not belong to the company; kook Alison (Ally Sheedy), that surprise everyone by her outstanding acting; and rebellious criminal John Bender (Judd Nelson), that demonstrates indifference and toughness. The movie, written and directed by genius of teen comedies John Hughes and produced with the help of Ned Tanen, represents a perfect mix of a joyful comedy and profound drama. To begin with, the situation represented in the film is quite realistic, except for the fact that such different people gathered together in the same place and at the same time. However, the viewer can consider that as a miraculous coincidence, which often happens in real life. Still, clear representation of youth problems, their behaviour and attitude to each other does not let us doubt that John Hughes has a subtle understanding of teenage psychology. As we can see in the movie, students stereotype each other at first without trying to find the reasons of such comportment. After a while, when they all conflict...

...The Person I Admire The sound of a pleasant tone that calls “Gracie” fills my heart with warmth as I open Mama Thors’s door every afternoon. Mama Thors is my boyfriend’s mother. She has short wavy blond hair and blue eyes, and her oval shape face looks like Reese Witherspoon’s. She has a slim body, which fits in with any kind of outfits her laughter lights up the room and her sweet smile makes me feel so loved and at peace. She is always ready to listen to my complaints about work or personal issues that bother me. Every time I ask, she is always there to give me advice. Beyond the support, she greets me with a gigantic smile across her face whenever I walk into her house and gives me an enormous hug and a soft kiss before I leave each evening. Although she is already beautiful, her kindness makes her more so. Smiles flow over her indulgent face as flowers every time she gives presents to people who are in need, such as charities for veterans and people suffering through disaster. I adore being around her so much that my heart attaches to her as a magnet attaches to the wall. I can even sense the lovely smell of her perfume wherever I go, like she is always with me. She makes my visits the most exciting moments of the week for me. I feel as if I am the luckiest person because it is very difficult to have found someone who is so loving, caring, and kind like Mama Thors. She shines on my dark days as the moon shines at...
