Motor vehicle accident fatalities are one of the leading causes of death among teenagers in Pennsylvania. All across the state teenagers cannot wait to get that piece of plastic in their hand that symbolizes a sense of freedom that they have not yet experienced. In this generation of young drivers, there are too many distractions at the wheel. Some of these distractions include, but are not limited to: cell phone use, loud music playing, eating, smoking and the biggest one of all, having too many peers as passengers. Insufficient amounts of behind-the-wheel experience and the immaturity of young drivers are factors that contribute to unsafe driving. Too many young drivers are involved in serious accidents because of poor decisions made behind …show more content…
Perhaps our state could learn a lesson or two from its neighbor to the east. New Jersey has proven that raising the minimum age of new drivers, stronger restrictions limiting peer passengers, and increasing the number of supervised hours spent behind-the-wheel before being granted a junior license would also help decrease accidents and fatalities caused by young drivers. New Jersey state police crash statistics show “48 teen fatalities in 2013. That’s 27 less than the average number of teen driver deaths over the prior four years” (Road Warrior 1). If strengthening New Jersey’s teen driving laws prevented 27 teen driver deaths in one year, perhaps Pennsylvania lawmakers should follow New Jersey’s …show more content…
In 2011, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation Act 81 took effect. It increased supervised behind-the-wheel skill building for learner’s permit holders. In 2012, Pennsylvania imposed a no-texting law for all Pennsylvania drivers (Act 81 par 2). When policies change, fatalities drop. During 2012, distracted driving fatalities dropped to 57 cases, two fewer than the previous year. Then in 2013, there were just 44 sixteen- and seventeen-year old drivers killed according to crash data released by Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (Act 81 par 5). The relief expressed among public officials when policy changes save lives is overwhelming. Jenny M. Robinson, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic stated, “We’re glad to see positive results for the teen driver law and the no-texting law” (Hessler par 4). These positive results are evident in the decreased number of lives lost because of new teen driver laws and the no-texting law.
