Health Literacy: Key to increasing Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality

Healthcare literacy is as essential as basic academic education. It enables one to understand the medical aspects of their body, along with pointing them in the correct direction regarding how to take care of it, illness prevention, and basic healthcare measures (Health Literacy, 2010). It acts as an important aspect in increasing patient safety and healthcare quality – both crucial elements of a healthcare organization and its functioning. However, a very alarming issue is that there exist a huge percentage of population, which has low health literacy, or is completely health illiterate. Although there have been various measures taken targeting this issue, there still …show more content…
With increasing use of modern technology and people depending on the Internet for answers, e-Health proves to be a very important and versatile tool, which can be used to improve population health. Various tools and resources combine to form the “e-Health” approach. These tools and resources include online health information, online communities and health groups, online self-management tools, access to personal health records (Health Communication, 2014). E-health proves to be an important and resourceful tool targeting low health literacy problem as along with providing basic health education and knowledge, it provides other resorts such as tips to manage chronic conditions, and communication with healthcare providers. It also offers information on how to make informed medical decisions by providing gathered medical Intel (Health Communication, 2014).
• Snomed CT: Snomed is another modern technique which can be used in order to increase health literacy. It is a “multilingual clinical healthcare terminology in the world” (Snomed CT, 2014). This technology provides effective access to information, along with providing data such as decision support and consistent reporting and analysis. It is a resource with comprehensive and scientifically validated content, along with being used in more than 50 countries.
