...Epilepsy is often specifies as “recurrent self-sustained paroxysmal disorders of brain function characterized by excessive discharge of cerebral neurons” (Purpura 1972). According to the World Health Organisation, epilepsy is the most relevant neurolopathology, with the epidemiology area of over 50 million and incidence of 2.4 million per year (Lévesque and Avoli 2013). Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most prevalent form of medical refractory symptomatic epilepsy disease (Engel 2001). Although any region of the brain can serve as a seizure focus, the temporal lobe is the most epileptogenic region. Patients with TLE typically show hippocampal sclerosis (HS), characterized by both selective neuronal atrophy, astrogliosis in the amygdala,...

...memories are examined. Relationship between Learning and Remembering To explain the relationship between learning and remembering, I would start with learning information such as preparing for a test. The student can remember the material for the test, but does not retain the information after the test to remember the knowledge. If the student learns the information for the test, but then retains the material, the student will remember what was studied to remember at a later time. The Specific Region of Clive's Brain is damaged to Result in this Memory Loss The hippocampus and medulla are damaged on the extensive left and a large amount on the right. The greatest damage is bilateral and to the left temporal lobe; the combination between inferior frontal and bilateral temporal lobe is usually extensive (Vattano, Bennett, &...

...of non-living things is usually achieved through the functional dimension of semantic memory. According to the authors’ findings from the first experiment, whenever there is brain damage to the section of visual semantics, then there is damage to one’s knowledge relating to living things. The authors, in another experiment, also identified that whenever there is brain damage involving the functional semantics section, then the knowledge of non living things is impaired. Overall, in this article, the authors present an argument that semantic memory has categories and that each category in the divisions of semantic memory works independently from the other. ...idea that different people learn in different ways. The VARK theory uses four main sensory receivers (acronym VARK): visual, aural, read-write, and kinesthetic in order to best serve the needs of a successful student. Neil Fleming said:” VARK learning styles are based on modalities-channels by which human expression can take place and is composed of a combination of perception and memory” (Fleming, 2006). The VARK analyses believe that visual learners learn best by seeing. They can benefit when a teacher writes key points on the board. Moreover, visual individuals benefit from studding charts and diagrams, PowerPoint presentations, and posters. Research reveals that visual learners use the occipital lobe at the back of the brain. Both the occipital and parietal lobes manage spatial orientation. VARK believes that aural learners learn best by hearing....

...Alzheimer’s Disease effects one out of every ten people over the age of sixty-five. It is said to be the most common type of dementia. There is an estimated 5.4 million people that currently live in this world with this mind crippling disease. Out of all the millions of people with Alzheimer’s 5.2 million of these people are over the age of sixty-five. Alzheimer’s is ranked sixth as a cause of death in the United States. The average life expectancy is eight years after a individual is diagnosed but survival can be up to twenty years depending on a persons age and how healthy they have been throughout their lives, Women are more likely to live longer than men so their risk of developing the disease is even greater. One of the worst parts of having Alzheimer’s disease is that it is not curable but researchers are working hard towards learning more and more about this disease. One of the first signs of Alzheimer’s is memory loss. At first this will just be thought of as being forgetful but over time the loss of memory grows to the point where they forget people and places they have been too. A person could even forget to eat or take their medication. In the brain as people age they develop plaques and tangles but those with Alzheimer’s will have more than the average person. This attacks the region of the brain that stores memories. The hippocampus is the hub to store information in our brain. In Alzheimer’s research it is thought that the hippocampus is one of the first portions...
