Terrorism Assignment 2
In this assignment I am going to be outlining the methods used by key terrorist organisations and discussing the methods used by the UPS both nationally and internationally to combat terrorism.
I am going to talk about 3 different key terrorist organisations the IRA (Irish Republican Army), Al-Qaeda and ISIS. Both past and present all of these organisations have used many different methods in order to inflict terror.
The IRA used bombs in terror attacks throughout the UK some examples of this are the bomb that was detonated at the Head Quarters of the 16th Parachute regiment on the 22nd of February 1972 in which seven people were killed and nineteen injured. Another example of an IRA bombing is the M62 Coach Bombing. The bomb was placed on a coach carrying Off-Duty British Army personnel and their families, 9 soldiers and 3 civilians were killed when the bomb placed in the luggage compartment of the coach detonated on the 4th of Februarys 1974.
Al-Qaeda has also used many different methods to cause terror, from assassinations to mass shootings and hijackings. Perhaps the most well-known terror attacks ever 9/11 was a Al-Qaeda attack. During the attack the terrorist group hijacked four planes with the intent of flying them into buildings, the first two flew into the North and South towers of the 110 floor world trade centres with the third flying into the west side of the Pentagon and the fourth crashing in a field outside Washington DC after the attackers were overrun by the passengers. In total 2977 people were killed by the 19 terrorists, 343 of which were UPS personnel. Another example of an Al-Qaeda attack is the assassination of Benazir Bhutto on the 27th of December 2007 he had twice been Prime Minister of Pakistan, his assassination caused a massive uproar and many people said that they believed that it was going to cause a Civil
