...Terrorism in the 21st Century Jacqueline Wright HST/145 May 14, 2012 Mary Norris Terrorism in the 21st Century Prior to September 11, 2001 the country moved along at its regular daily pace. Conflict and wars have been a component of the United States since the beginning of time. There are three sources conflict: human rights, global terrorism, and environmental problems. Many see terrorism as a way to hide greed, racism, and the conquests of power. Terrorism is defined by the Federal Bureau of Investigations “as an unlawful use of force or violence against person or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives” (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 2002-2005). Terrorism makes the statement that demands attention and affects every person in every country around the world. Prior to 9/11 Prior to September 11, 2001 the hiring and firing of airline personnel was not as stringent. Those in charge of checking passenger’s luggage and person were not trained effectively. They would miss illegal weapons, drugs, and any other paraphernalia the airline industry did not want on aircraft. The workers took a lax attitude toward his or her job duties, which made for a high turnover rate. Along with the lax attitude the workers or screeners as they were called received low wages and little to no benefits. The infrastructure of the airport terminals were not monitored and maintained...

...The Growing Trend of Domestic Terrorism in the 21st Century On April 13, 2013, in Boston, MA our country found its self under yet another terrorist attack. The United States of America was founded under some of the same pretenses that many today would and do call terrorism. The methods and tactics used against the British by our founding fathers, soldiers and militia, do in many ways run parallel to what modern day terrorists are doing and have done to us, but yet they were labeled patriots. This country was founded on such mischievous tactics; maybe it is just karma, that terrorism is such a huge problem for us today. Throughout history, the U.S. has been under constant terrorist attack, a countless number of times, by a multitude of enemies either foreign or domestic. Since the beginning of the 21st Century, many different types of Terrorist attacks against the United States of America have significantly grown, which has caused a lot of fear and animosity among many Americans. A day that all Americans and most of the free world will never forget, September 11, 2001, the day that our country was crippled, people fell to their knees in prayer. 19 insane militants associated with the Islamic extremist group known as al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out terrifying suicide attacks against 3 targets located in the United States (history.com). The first was targeted with 2 commercial airliners (American Airlines Flight 11 & United Airlines Flight 175) focusing...

...Terrorism is a complex term with a long history and different meanings, depending on the context and who uses it. Here you’ll find articles that define terrorism and explain different facets of the term. HISTORY Terrorism has struck all through history and around the world. In the 19th century, Western Europeans, Russians, and Americans adopted terrorism, and believed that the best way to get what they wanted was to assassinate people holding high positions of power. The 20th century, terrorism went through some great changes. The use of new technology such as automatic weapons and electrically bursting explosives encouraged terrorists to act violently and provided them with an easier way of attacking. At the time, attacks were mainly from groups trying to undermine or overthrow existing political institutions. However, today terrorism exists with different causes and purposes in mind. Terrorism went from numerous attacks in the 20th century, to less frequent but more destructive assaults in the 21st century. The threat of terrorism has now become more deadly. Over the past couple years; terrorists have developed new tactics such as portable bombs, suicide operatives, and weapons of mass destruction. These have been known to result in hundreds, not to say thousands of people being injured or killed. Some people even become terrorist, or are forced into terrorizing for reasons that they do not even know. As Michael Herr mentions, “Every day people were dying because...

...In 2001, following the events of 9/11, Putin called terrorism "plague of the 21st century"1 - a disease that strikes innocent victims unexpectedly and in a undifferentiated way. The act of terrorism seemed irrational and unforeseen in the eyes of modern democracies due to the failure of the collective memory of the international community. The states of the Western world were reinforced in what might be called a regulated 'Westphalian order' - a type of conventional relations between balanced and identifiable powers in which sovereignty is essential. But this outlook on the international system seems now and even then somehow biased: indeed, nation-states have already been challenged by non-state actors for a long time. As Alan G. Stolberg...

...remains as the driving force behind the machine known as the United States. America’s military force has always been a threat, and began to emerge to the forefront during the 20th century; it wasn’t until the turn of the 21st century that its true power was exerted. This paper will discuss: America’s rise to military “glory” during the 20th century, its present state, and what must be done in order to preserve it status as a world power in the future. Rise to Military Dominance At the turn of the 21st century, the United States military was at a standstill in terms of military action; especially when compared to the 20th century. The 20th Century was the “bloodiest, costliest century of warfare in human history”; with major conflicts happening seemingly every day. World War I and II, a large number of major revolutions; along with significant social, political, and economic upheavals made the period from 1901 to 2000 of great importance in a historical and military sense. It can be said that the 20th century paved the way for the outlook of the 21st century American military. The fight was expanded from the ground and sea to the air with the invention of Aircraft. Nuclear weapons, the “crown jewel” of modern military weaponry, were first introduced to the world during the 20th century. The 20th century also saw the...

...justice system has to evolve in order to be able to detect and keep up with growing trends in society. New laws need to be created to help keep up with the evolution and its new trends. In this paper the evaluation of past, present, and future trends that connect to societies and the components of the criminal justice system will be discussed. It will also assess the recent and future contemporary issues that affect the criminal justice system. The purpose of this paper is to show that the criminal justice system has a major role in an ever changing society. Recent and future trends have always and will always affect the criminal justice system. New trends in technology, law, terrorism, gender and diversity will always effect the functions of the criminal justice system. Technology in the 21st century is one of the legal issues that have caused controversy. New technology devices such as hand geometry biometrics and the use of retina and iris devices have the ability to gain information not only on people’s health but also their medical history as well. When it concerns the criminal justice system, many of these new technology devices are being used to detect drugs and concealed weapons that are sneaked into prison facilities. They help prevent illegal activities in the prison. In Australia, the correction system there uses the smart card technology which provides them with better security, efficiency and flexibility. The smart card allows assets to tracking inmates, staff...

...According to Christopher Hitchens, “Terrorism is the tactic of demanding the impossible, and demanding it at gun point,” of which is undeniably true. Terrorism is the extension of fear, trepidation and distress to project its views into the then current political spectrum, to alter the views, culture and ethos of the respective political power. Essentially, terrorism is about acquiring awareness in society for its cause, subsequently questioning the government’s stance or perspective. In doing so terrorism, as this essay will discuss, creates reservations about the legitimacy of the current government, raises doubts surrounding the power of the state; a manoeuvre that demands concessions. Moreover, terrorism has taken on a pseudo religious-political form that has resulted in an involuntary knee-jerk reaction throughout the modern liberal democracies in the Western World. Not many events, actions or ideologies have influenced politics as terrorism has done so consistently throughout history. Terrorism and politics intertwine more than many understand. Terrorism is a catalyst for political interaction and development; as politics is seldom contained to one opinion, it is home to a myriad of diverse beliefs and judgements. It is about command and control and is not regulated to a sole individual, but the interconnections of various people from differing backgrounds and faiths, prompting revolution, oppression and liberalisation (Delaware Criminal Justice...

...Short Essay On India In 21st Century In the 21 century, as India enters the age of computer, we would be able to solve various problems as a result of which India would appear for more glorious than the present state. After Independence India has been on the move politically towards stability, socio-economic progress, scientific and cultural achievements. The U.N.O also wants every country to achieve the goal of “Health for All” by the beginning of 21st century. A number of problems of india, expected to be rooted out speedily after independence, have lifted their ugly heads even after 60 years of independence. Regionalism, separatism, terrorism are on the rise with a fiercing mood. Unemployment ,population explosion, illiteracy, poverty, health and housing problems appear as the stumbling blocks that we are facing now-a-days. Above all, we bear the heavy burden of population and the sense of cultivating moral values has been eroded. It is a shame for us. To provide for the basic necessities of such a vast population remains a difficult task, and there is no sign that the problem of food cloths and shelter will be solved by the start of the century. So a large section of the people will enter into the new century with poverty as their bosom friend. Another of her major problems is illiteracy. Since India has not succeeded in making education free for boys and girls ups the age of fourteen, it is unlikely that she will be able to arrest her trend of illiteracy. Another...

...Title Author Institution The Ku Klux Klan Domestic terrorism is simply defined as terrorism practiced in one’s own country against fellow countrymen but with the many cases of terrorism being highlighted all around the world each day, terrorism has generally gained many more definitions. Regardless of this though, terrorism is one of the world’s greatest challenges in the 21st century. The United Nations Secretary General described terrorism in 2004 as any act intended to cause serious harm or death to civilians with the purpose of compelling a government or an international organization or with the objective of intimidating a population to do or refrain from doing an act. Domestic terrorism is a form of terrorism normally used to advance certain social or political interests of a group or section of the society. This form of terrorism has been occurring for a long time and it has been argued by some authorities that domestic terrorism acts were present long before the acts were legally defined (Hess & Orthmann, 2009). In the United States, domestic terrorism is a weighty matter with many terrorist groups being active all around the nation. One such group labeled as a domestic terrorist organization is the Ku Klux Klan, a right-wing white supremacist organization classified as terrorist in the US. Often abbreviated as the KKK and also known informally as The Klan, this far-right organization has advocated for extremist reactionary notions such as white...

...New Terrorism? Predicting the Future of Terrorism Introduction/ Purpose Terrorism is an often controversial subject. “One man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist.” This is a well known quote that is often used to allude to the complexity of terrorism. Terrorism, the word itself is a word that has possessed over a hundred definitions and a concept that has changed as the societies of the world have progressed. The use of the terms terrorism and terrorist are politically weighted, and are often used for a polarizing effect, where 'terrorism' becomes simply a relativist term for the violence committed by an enemy, from the point of view of the attacked. Because of the political nature of some struggles, 'terrorism' can become identified as simply any violence committed against established institutions. A terrorist is, strictly speaking, one who is personally involved in an act of terrorism. The term "terrorism" comes from the French 18th century word terrorisme (under their government's Reign of Terror), based on the Latin language verbs terrere (to tremble) and deterrere (to frighten from). The use of the term "terrorist" has had broader applications however, ranging in application from disgruntled citizens to common political dissidents. It is important to understand terrorism in our modern arena and under stand its effects on society. ‘Terrorism’, as a unified political and ideological motif did not arise spontaneously in response to particular instances...

...Terrorism – is there any working global frameworks to counter it? By Zuzanna Sadowska On the 22nd of September 2003 Kofi Annan, UN Secretary-General, organized a conference “Fighting Terrorism for Humanity” in New York City. He opened the summit with words: “Terrorism will only be defeated if we act to solve the political disputes or long-standing conflicts that generate support for it. (…) If we do not, we should find ourselves acting as recruiting sergeants for the very terrorists. We have to win hearts and minds.” The causes of terrorism may be inter alia historical, economical, religious or ideological, and there is no way to entirely eliminate it from our world. Preventing terrorism needs complete understanding of the phenomenon and cooperation between states. There are different actions taken by various organisations and people but not all of them succeed. What exactly is terrorism, how do terrorist organisations work and how to counter terrorist activities? Terrorism by itself has numerous definitions as it is hard to define it precisely. It is said that this phenomenon has over 100 definitions and lack of one, widely recognized, hinders fighting with this danger. When we discuss about terrorism in colloquial conversation, we instinctually know what it is about and what the meaning of this word is. It is otherwise in case of professional and legal discussions where you have to agree on a definition of the term. The concept of terrorism derives from the Greek treo – “to...

...Ending a terrorist campaign from a democratic stand point is a hard task. Terrorist, especially in the 21st century is very adaptive to their environment and have gone global. This overall has left many different approaches to combating terrorism or insurgences. There is HVT approach; cutting their financial flow approach; the heavy intelligence approach; train, advise, assist; and the hearts and minds approach. These approaches can be used by themselves, or in conjunction with each other. HVT Approach The High Value Target (HVT) approach works toward taking out key leaders in a terrorist organization, to hopefully create a tunnel effect. This tunnel effect is supposed to either take the leadership out of the organization, establish weaker leadership, or cause internal conflict within the organization which overall weakens it (Frankel 2011). This...

...ESSAY British type of multicultural society In less than three decades «multiculturalism» has become a world immediately recognized by policy makers, social commentators, academics and the general public in Western industrial countries, if not elsewhere. Britain is not an exception. In this case it is necessary to discuss pluses and minuses of multicultural society. The UK has welcomed newcomers for centuries. It is a mixture of diverse ethnic groups, each with their own distinct culture and sometimes their own language or religion. In my point of view, there are more negative sides of multiculturalism in the UK than benefits. One argument in support of my opinion is the fact that multiculturalism in Britain causes immigration crime and terrorism. At the beginning of the 21st century, the multiculturalism started to be seen from race relations to religion, religion is clearly seen in a cultural context. All this led to numerous acts of terrorism and crimes based on religion. Also the widening gap in cultures has caused more segregation and fear in many communities, and has created more radical organizations which are visible on both sides. Also it is a well-known fact that the UK is a prime example of realization of the model of "hard" multiculturalism: the country has not only developed and actively implements a broad system of measures to support national minorities to preserve their identity, culture, traditions and customs. But also has adopted a number of laws to prevent...
