...Terry Fox Who: Terry Fox was a Canadian humanitarian, athlete, and cancer research activist What: Terry Fox ran across Canada on one leg to raise money for cancer research and awareness Where: Terry ran from St Johns on the east coast to the outside of Thunder Bay When: He started his run on April 12th, 1980 and ended on September 1st 1980 Why: To raise money for cancer research and for everyone suffering from cancer also to find a cure Terry fox was not only a great Canadian but also an inspiring individual, with great goals and ambitions. I personally find what he did very touching and inspirational. The fact that he attempted to run across Canada on one leg (since the other one had been amputated because of his cancer) is simply so brave and noble of him. Also it must have defiantly been so hard to run 5373 km on one leg, furthermore I know for a fact I couldn’t even imagine running 2 km on two legs; let alone running what Terry did on one leg. The part I also find very great about him is that he didn’t just do this for himself he did this for everyone else that was suffering from cancer, he was obviously in no condition to run but he still did because he wanted to show people that if you try you can make a difference. Terry did make a difference, thanks to his run people to this day run each year to raise money for cancer, a matter of fact there is a special day for him which is the annual Terry Fox Run Day which is held every year in September. ...------------------------------------------------- Employment relations essay “Management should have the right to determine whether a union should operate within their workplace” Discuss. Due April 27, 9AM By cassidy Eastabrook 2171192 Due April 27, 9AM By cassidy Eastabrook 2171192 Introduction Unions have been a heavily debated topic in Australian workplaces for decades. Some see unions as unnecessary evils, interfering with employee obedience and trustworthiness, the overall employment relationship and an organisation’s practices. On the contrary, many other employers and employees see unions as a channel for collective bargaining and better employee representation. Throughout the years of debates one question has remained prominent, “Should management be able to dictate whether or not a union should function within their workplace?”. This question is, of course, controversial resulting in their being no clear cut answer. On one hand, some may argue that should management have this right, organisations may experience increased managerial prerogative, boosted productivity and performance and decreased levels of conflict. However, on the other hand, critics disagree, stating that whilst this may be the case, the overall wellbeing of employees will suffer as they are taken advantage of through individual contracting. This essay aims to delve into both perspectives; the perspective of management and the perspective of the employee and identify more clearly the benefits...

...The aim of this essay is to show how the three performances in dance, music and drama were influenced by Brecht, Lea Anderson and the various artists involved with the musical genre of minimalism. This essay will also describe the process the ensemble went through while devising and rehearsing the performance as well as the similarities between the art forms, such as the significance of characterisation within dance and drama when portraying stereotypical characters. Devising For drama, the practitioner the ensemble studied was Berthold Brecht, an early 20th century German theatre practitioner who pioneered the theatrical movement of Epic theatre. Brecht is of particular interest given the similarities in subject matter, as the groups subject is about the detention facility Guantanamo Bay; thematically similar to Brecht’s work which also dealt with topics involving the abuse of power, institutional corruption, the effects of war etc. The ensemble initially did a great deal of research into Epic theatre and the techniques of Epic theatre as well as Berthold Brecht and his life. Following that, they then made a mind map of the problems surrounding Guantanamo and focused particularly on the issues that garnered the least attention publically yet posed the greatest threat to the liberty and rights of everyone. Based on this we chose the unlawful kidnaping, imprisonment and torture of individuals without trial, the implementation of secret courts, and the propaganda published by...

...giving birth to an important R&D hub for 3M's global business enabling the company to better supply products needed in the industries of electronics, telecommunications, automobiles, shipping, aviation, medical care, housing and leisure," company officials said. Today, 3M has 11 companies and 19 offices across the country, employing more than 5,000, showing a long-term commitment for the Chinese market. Through those trends, we can notice how R&D is now important in the globalization process. Li-Hua and Khalil (2006) argue that the international business environment is affected by globalization and this emphasizes the importance of studying synergies and differences between Western and Eastern management concepts. The present essay will analyze the reasons, benefits and drawbacks of this significant increasing level of foreign invested R&D conducted in the Chinese environment. It could then contribute to the decision for a company to create and develop its...

...1984 Studies examining managerial accounting decisions postulate that executives rewarded by earnings-based bonuses select accounting procedures that increase their compensation. The empirical results of these studies are conflicting. This paper analyzes the format of typical bonus contracts, providing a more complete characterization of their accounting incentive effects than earlier studies. The test results suggest that (1) accrual policies of managers are related to income-reporting incentives of their bonus contracts, and (2) changes in accounting procedures by managers are associated with adoption or modification of their bonus plan. 1. Introduction Earnings-based bonus schemes are a popular means of rewarding corporate executives. Fox (1980) reports that in 1980 ninety percent of the one thousand largest U.S. manufacturing corporations used a bonus plan based on accounting earnings to remunerate managers. This paper tests the association between managers' accrual and accounting procedure decisions and their incomereporting incentives under these plans. Earlier studies testing this relation postulate that executives rewarded by bonus schemes select income-increasing accounting procedures to maximize their bonus compensation. 1 Their empirical results are conflicting. These tests, however, have several problems. First, they ignore the earnings' definitions of the plans; earnings are often defined so that certain accounting decisions do not affect bonuses. For exam* I am indebted...
