Tesco Anti-Bacteria vs. Dettol Anti-Bacteria Cleaners (which is better?)
Introduction:
Disinfectants have been used to kill bacteria for many years.
Risk assessment:
Glassware/sharps: They can cause minor cuts / major wounds. Ways of reducing the risks of cutting yourself and work in an organised fashion.
Electrical: they can cause an electrical shock. To stop getting electrical shocks never handle electrical equipment with wet hands. Use equipment that has been pat tested in the last year.
Virkon: harmful .after use wash hands after use.
Agar nutrient: low hazard. Wash hands after use is if it is spilt wipe the benches with Virkon to prevent microorganism growth.
Disinfectants: low hazard. Wash hands after use.
Ethanol: can cause a fire. Take care when using ethanol with the Bunsen.
Bunsen: burns. Use carefully. Keep on yellow flame when not in use.
E.coli: possibility of infections. Use a good antiseptic technique. Wear a lab coat. Cover cuts/ ware gloves. Depose of equipment in a bleach pot or bags for autoclaving. Hypothesis:
I would expect to find that Dettol works better than Tesco’s disinfectant because it is said to work better than other leading brands.
Equipment:
Tweezers
Borer
Pipettes Suring (20Ym)
Glass simmers
Beaker of ethanol
Bunsen burner
E.coli
4 clean agar plates
Virkon
30 Cm Ruler
Micropipette
Method: 1. 1 plate for each cleaner (2 plates used, other plates are in case a mistake is made) swamped the E.coli in the blue flame of the Bunsen burner. 2. Get a pipette of E.coli and up it on the plate. Flame the spreader (put it in ethanol then in the flame) be careful on to crack the spreader. Use the simmer to spread the bacteria around the agar plate 3. Flame borer (in the same way as the simmer but be careful if the borer is in the flame too long you can burn your hand. If you do run it under the tap for 10 minutes so that is dose not blister.) 4. Cut holes in the agar plate with the borer 2 holes in each plate. 5. If the agar is still in the borer tap it in to the Virkon. If not use the tweezers to get the agar out ready of the anti bacteria in the holes. you need to flame the tweezers. 6. Label the holes with numbers so you can identify the holes at a later date. 7. Use the micropipette to put the anti bacteria solutions in the holes use 10 μls 8. Put the lid on the plate and put it in the incubator.
Results:
Hole | Tesco anti bacteria (mm) | Dettol anti bacteria (mm) | 1 | 23 | 24 | 2 | 22 | 20 | 3 | 24 | 19 | 4 | 26 | 20 | Average | 23.75 | 20.75 |

Discussion:
Tesco is better than Dettol for killing E.coli. Next time I do these tests I think that I would test other bacteria not just bacteria because Dettol might be better at kill other bacteria. Tesco is 3 millimetres better than Dettol on average. Dettol says it can kill 99.9% of bacteria and it is better than other brands. Tesco says it can kill 99.9% of bacteria. This test shows that Tesco is better than Dettol. This does not meet my prodctiction.
Evaluation:
I think that the experiment could have gone differently because I might not have put enough Dettol in the holes in the agar. Therefore Tesco’s antibacterial could have done better bemuse there was more of it. The test was a fair test because the same method was used to prepare dose plates ready to be incubated. I think my results are not reliable because I have not got other peoples data to compare mine too.
