...GULU UNIVERSITY THE NORTHERN QUESTION BY HENRY EGYEYU Tel No: +256774366667/+256794366667/+256714366667/+256754366667 THE ROOT CAUSE OF THE NORTHERN CONFLICT IN UGANDA The origins of the wider northern Ugandan conflict may be sought among deeper issues that lie hidden beneath the surface of the day-to-day conflict with the LRA These root causes, which underlay the initial UPDA and other rebellions, are critical since they have never been resolved and if left unaddressed may again re-surface and cause renewed violence. Yet, although most commentators agree on the existence of deep-rooted causes, there is no consensus on what they are or, consequently, how to resolve the situation. Gersony emphasizes the “ghosts of the Luwero Triangle” that haunt an Acholi people who lost economic and political influence following Museveni’s rise to power, but a recent report by the Human Rights and Peace Centre, Makerere University (HURIPEC) argues that it was the NRM that initiated an ethnic war against northerners even before the events in the Luwero Triangle. These and other rival analyses can create difficulties for conflict resolution efforts, as key actors seek a clear idea of the issues to address. A more thorough investigation of these root causes is essential, particularly at a time when there is renewed hope that the conflict may soon be resolved and the deeper causes dealt with comprehensively. Based on field interviews and an analysis of the available literature,...

This has been done by objectively looking at the challenges that these important sectors are facing as a result of the negative ethnicity or tribalism that Kenya is notorious for. In order to put into perspective and to qualify the ideas expressed in this report many historical and contemporary examples have been presented. The report also contains recommendations made by the group with regards to what needs to be done to overcome this problem. INTRODUCTION A tribe is a group of individuals who possess a common ancestry, language, culture and sometimes-geographical area. Kenya boasts of 42 indigenous tribes spread across the country. Tribalism is the selfish use of this commonness to deny or dispossess others who are not of the same tribe of their rights and access to opportunities and resources in society. It is the act of favouring those from one’s tribe be it in social, public or economic decisions and discriminating...

...supermarkets have been losing ground to discount retailers Aldi and Lidl since the recession struck. * Tesco has been struggling to turn around the performance of its UK stores despite a £1bn overhaul. * Tesco’s sales in the 12-week period were 4 per cent lower than a year earlier. Aldi’s sales grew by 29.5 per cent and Lidl’s by 18.3 per cent. They now occupy 4.8 per cent and 3.6 per cent of the market respectively. * Lewis, who joins Tesco from consumer goods giant Unilever on October 1, faces the challenge of wooing customers back to stores. http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/money/markets/article-2735944/Tesco-suffers-drop-market-share-sales-fall-4-cent.html#ixzz3T8RRhQtC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-28978540 Why Teso lost customers? * The retailer had lost focus on the core retailing principles - best prices, highest quality and stores that people like shopping in. * Mr Clarke famously pulled Tesco out of "the space race", halting the expansion of hyper-stores and instead focusing on a different strategy of making Tesco "all things to all people" with a strong digital bent. * The launch of Tesco's own tablet, the Hudl, proved very successful - giving Tesco an automatic way of influencing how people shopped online. * Mr Clarke allowed Tesco to lose its reputation as the cheapest of the "Big Four" retailers, a crown it lost to Asda. High price: expensive than Asda by 6% * When it came to tackling the exodus, sources say there was a...

...THE INFLUENCE OF SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT ON STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS ABSTRACT The study aimed at finding out the influence of the environment on students' academic performance in selected secondary schools in Origbo Community ,Ife North Local Government Area. The need for the study arose from the fact that much as educators, policymakers and the general public have always wanted students’ academic outcomes to improve, the results in Origbo Community show that some schools have continued to register poor performance in National Exams. It was therefore important that a study be conducted to establish the extent to which the environment affects students' academic performance. The research sought to determine whether school infrastructure, instructional materials and teacher quality influence students’ academic performance(environmental factors) in any way affected academic performance of students. A cross sectional design was employed with a sample size of 302 senior four students who were randomly selected from eight secondary schools. Questionnaires were used to collect quantitative data from students while an interview guide was used to gather qualitative data from teachers and head teachers. The study also employed an observation checklist. The quantitative data was analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of frequency counts and percentages; and inferential statistics using the t-test and ANOVA technique to...

...Conducting Business in Kenya February 13, 2015 Abstract As a business consultant for XYZ Medical Group, our mission is to travel to East Africa and build a HIV/AIDS clinic. Our goal is to educate different communities on the importance of safeguarding their health against contracting this disease. XYZ Medical Group has designed a program that has been successful in New York City and Philadelphia. Pursing international endeavors will be challenging when it comes to cultural and business practices. Understanding the different cultures and how to interact to convey the message is crucial. In order to be successful there must be policies and a strategic framework for mobilizing and coordinating resources for the prevention of HIV/AIDS transmission and provision of care and support to the infected and affected people in Kenya. AIDS is an epidemic throughout Africa and Kenya is not excluded. Currently, most people are not educated on the dangers of this disease due to ethnic, cultural, and religious beliefs. The country’s diverse culture, customs and gestures, political imbalance, economic state, and how they conduct business with foreign influences are some issues that will be addressed and solved before entering this venture. Conducting Business in Kenya Kenya or the Republic of Kenya is a newly independent country that gained its independence in 1963 from British colonial rule. Kenya is located in East Africa and is bordered by Tanzania, Uganda, South Sudan. Ethiopia...
