Today I stand before you all, in deep sorrow, celebrating the life of Tessie Hutchinson. My mother lived her life in a great way with grace and love. The way she lived her life shall be an example for all the winners of the future lottery, in the idea that, and I quote, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years that does.” I believe my mother lived her life with ignorance and sarcasm, but love was in her heart around the people she cherished. My mother was never very fond of the idea of the lottery, and always wanted to stand up for what she believed in. Although she felt this way, she went with the flow just like everyone else, not knowing what her near future would hold. She died very young at age 44, but felt fulfilled and blessed to have the people around her that she did. She was a part of almost everything within the community. I also remember when the two of us went with my dad to the local diner. Drinking milkshakes and telling stories, we sat there all night. A calm, gentle, yet stubborn woman is how I’d like to remember her. To calm me down, she also usually sang me lullabies when I was little. That memory makes me still feel safe, even though she’s gone. It brings extreme anger to think that this community stoops down to this low level of morality. All for what, to fit in? My mom wouldn’t have ever wanted anything like this, she would want us to continue with our lives not mourn others loss of it. She never truly agreed with the idea of our lottery. Bravely and strongly she lived her life, and I would like you all, her family and friends, to remember her like this. A woman who I hope to see in others and as well as myself. The lottery we have faced for as long as anyone can remember, and hundreds have been lost. Some agree, and some don’t. Like my mom I am proud to be one of the few who dislikes
