Anxiety is a widespread, common phenomenon in society. If an individual’s anxiety is bad enough, it can begin to affect all facets of their daily life. There have been studies that show there is an appropriate level of anxiety that is needed to motivate individuals to accomplish goals, meet deadlines, or study for exams, and hold people responsible of what they have to do in their lives (Kahan , 2008). An area of research that has been studied quite a bit in recent years is test anxiety and its effect on students. Test anxiety is the unpleasant feeling or emotional state that affects the student cognitively and behaviorally during an examination, which affects their academic performance (Birenbaum, M., & Nasser 1994). Students that have some level of test anxiety is acceptable because it promotes working …show more content…
Birenbaum and Nasser (1994) found that test anxiety has become a very troublesome factor in schools and other settings where testing is performed. Students across all levels of schooling experience test anxiety, but research has shown that students in graduate school and medical school tend to show higher levels of test anxiety compared to students who are earning their undergraduate degree .The factors that could be contributing to this phenomenon are that students in medical school tend to have a highly competitive curriculum and academic competition. Awareness of test anxiety and things that influence test anxiety are very important to know in medical students, so that campuses may incorporate preventative interventions and teach students how to deal with stress and anxiety. These interventions, if implemented early, can enhance students’ academic abilities and improve their psychological health (Birenbaum, & Nasser 1994). Some relaxation techniques that have been implemented across campuses are yoga and meditation
