The catastrophic defeats and losses of the initial stage of the war were clearly the result of the fundamental miscalculation of the Stalinist leadership that had chosen to ally the Soviet Union with the Nazi regime. The collusion with Hitler had deprived Russia of the critical buffer of Poland, allowing Germany to amass troops along the Soviet border and launch the surprise attack. In addition, the Soviet troops, deployed in the recently annexed eastern provinces of Poland, did not have enough time to set up powerful defensive positions.Stalin had received numerous warnings from his intelligence agents and Western governments about the imminent surprise attack, but he chose to discount them. He may have believed that countermeasures by the Soviet Union could only provoke the Germans. Having overcome the initial shock of the surprise attack, the Soviet administrative machine was soon able to orchestrate an unprecedented economic effort that defeated Germany and its satellites in armaments production. The achievement was especially remarkable in view of the fact that in 1941–42 the USSR lost to the enemy over half its industrial capacity and countless skilled workers. To appreciate the Soviet spectacular economic effort in the war, it is important to note that the task was not simply of switching over from civilian to military production but also of moving massive productive resources to the safety of the country’s eastern regions.

Blitzkrieg tactics required the concentration of offensive weapons (such as tanks, planes, and artillery) along a narrow front. These forces would drive a breach in enemy defenses, permitting armored tank divisions to penetrate rapidly and roam freely behind enemy lines, causing shock and disorganization among the enemy defenses.
Blitzkrieg tactics "lightning war", in its strategic means is associated with a series of quick and decisive short battles to deliver a knockout blow to an enemy state before it could fully mobilize. The tactical meaning of blitzkrieg involves a coordinated military effort by tanks, mobilized infantry, artillery and aircraft, to create an overwhelming local superiority in combat power, to overwhelm an enemy and break through its lines. 4) Why was the Blitzkrieg tactic not successful in the USSR unlike in Europe?
