Introduction

We found studies similar to those conducted by our group. A study done by Charters, M. & Grimes, P in December 2000 concluded that there was similarity between library usage and ethnics. A correction was found with if students worked part time or full time. Black females who lived on-camps spent more time per week in the library than white males who lived off-campus. Another study that was also similar was done by Watson, L in September 2001, which concluded that there was a difference in educational gains of students by class level, colleges, and grade point averages. There was a difference between these groups. According to the study done by our group there were many relationships between the variables that were examined. The study that was completed by our group was done to find out if there was any relationship between Sacramento City College students and their use of library material. The purpose of this study was to get a broad picture of which students used the library and if the library is helping in stopping the students from falling behind. Our study shows significant insights where other studies have represented more of a limited view. Our hypothesis is students at SCC do not have sufficient access to reserve material in the library to be a successful student.
Method

Participants

The participants in this study were male and female students who attend Sacramento City College. There were fifty participants in this study. The students who participated in this study were randomly selected.

Procedure

The type of design used for this study is a survey. The participants were randomly selected from the Sacramento City College campus. Each student was asked to take a survey of thirty onethirty-one questions and fifty surveys were to be collected. After the surveys were collected, it had to be inputted into SPSS.

Discussion

This study was designed to explore the relationships along several lines of research: First, the survey was designed with respect to exploring relationships between library access among community college students who attended Sacramento City College, their socio-economic status, music practices, library usage, study patterns, and how these factors influenced each other given time constraints, employment, and so on. Second, the research was designed to measure a student’s ability to succeed and how these factors noted in the survey correlated to demonstrate meaningful and significant relationships to support the hypothesis that students at Sacramento City College do not have sufficient access to reserve materials in the library to be a successful student. Previous studies such as the study done by Marybeth Charters and Paul Grimes on Economic undergraduate students (Charles, M; Grimes, P. 2000). The study results showed similarities between library usage and race; black females who lived on campus were more likely to use library resources than white males who lived off campus. What made our survey unique are questions related to source of income, attendance, units taken each semester, text book and required reading, library use or completing assignments, reserve book access, falling behind on studies, factors that encouraged a student to study more, influence of music, and places of study. The survey, when correlated using SPSS statistical software showed significance in a number of relationships such as GPA and living circumstances; year of birth and source of income; gender and major interest, source of income and units taken. Living circumstances and use of books placed on reserve ; race and ethnicity and the use of books placed on reserve; studying and living standards; books placed on reserve and living circumstances; library use for completing assignments with relationships to learning resources, textbooks made available on reserve, books placed on reserve, and falling behind in studies; falling behind on studies and source of income, semesters attended, library use for completing assignments, learning resources, and textbooks placed on reserve. In conclusion, the data indicates a myriad of significant relationships on both the 0.05 and 0.01 levels of significance. The data is more than sufficient to prove the hypothesis, that students at Sacramento City College do not have sufficient access to reserve book materials to be a successful student. This is to say that current reserve book policies impede and thus impair the success of a number of students who depend on the library, particularly the reserve book section for the achievement of academic success.
