Report on Escherichia Coli and Tetani Clostridium.
Tetani Clostridium is responsible for the critical, often lethal, disease Tetanus which is caused by the exotoxin tetanospasmin. Escherichia Coli is a microbe that lives in our gut and can be very helpful to us. Both microbes are bacteria and are rod-shaped bacilli. Both of these microbes have an interesting life cycle, one can help us and both can make us sick, use different life processes and are affected by their environment.

This is because Tetanus is not contagious from person to person but is acquired through environmental exposure. T.C. is the only vaccine preventable disease that is infectious but not contagious. Upon entering the body in anaerobic (low oxygen) conditions the spores germinate. The bacterium produces two exotoxins (wastes from energy production), Tetanolysin and Tetanospasmin. Whilst the function of Tetanolysin is not known with certainty, Tetanospasmin is the neurotoxin which causes the medical symptoms of Tetanus. The estimated minimum lethal human dose is 2.5 ng per kg of body weight making it one of the most potent toxins known to man. This toxin is disseminated by the blood and lymphatics and acts at various places in the central nervous system including the spinal cord, peripheral motor end plates and the sympathetic nervous system. The toxin then interferes with the release of neurotransmitters, blocking inhibitor impulses. This causes the muscles to spontaneously contract and spasm. Seizures sometimes occur and our autonomic nervous system may also been affected. Globally around 1 million people die of tetanus and 80% of deaths occur in Africa and Asia most likely due to poor vaccination
