Both Dite (2012) and Tsung (2012) discuss the influence of texting on the English language with opposing views. This essay will critically respond to both authors.
Dite (2012) has two ideas to support texting’s negative influence on the English language. First of all, Dite states that because of the limited number of characters children are using abbreviations to chat with friends, which as a result are used in their exams and homework. Secondly, Dite believes that because most texts read by children are short text messages youngsters are losing the ability to concentrate when reading books longer than the average text message.

On the other hand, Tsung (2012) argues that texting is positive for the English language and gives two ideas that contradict Dite (2012). Firstly, Tsung (2012) suggests that most students are intelligent enough to know which circumstances are suitable to use abbreviations so they would not use it in their exams. Additionally, Tsung (2012) states that texting enhances English language skills through the additional practice of reading and writing in text messages. Both authors discuss the topic of abbreviations however Dite’s opinion is weaker than Tsung’s for a number of reasons. Firstly, she gives no evidence or statistics to prove that students may confuse and use abbreviation in essays. In contrast, Tsung (2012) gives a logical argument that most students are intelligent enough to distinguish when and where they can use abbreviations appropriately. To explain, most students want to have high scores in the exams, so they try their best to study and are aware that using abbreviations may lose marks in an exam. In addition most teachers teach students that abbreviations are not allowed to be used in essays and if they did use them at school teachers would correct the students on the use of abbreviations before they sit exams. Recent research from David Crystal, a linguistics professor at Bangor University, suggests that only 10% of text messages are abbreviations and children only use them to chat with friends because it is cool and to save time. Conversely there is no evidence to show that students use them in exams.
