Texting vs. Calling
Years ago making a phone call on the cellular phone was huge advancement for communication, now today texting has become the main form of communicating. In 1973 Martin Cooper created the first portable phone 800 MHz prototypes that could be used outside the home and the car, before the only portable phones were in cars. It weighed about 2.5 lb. and the battery life lasted for about 20 minutes. According to Motorola.com, Cooper is considered the inventor of the first handheld cellular phone and the first person to make a phone call in public on a handheld cell phone. In 1977 cell phones went public. Chicago was the first city to trial cell phones with 2000 customers. Over the years as cellphones became smaller, lighter, and a longer battery life- they have also added new features to expand the way we communicate with others.
The new cellphones today, a person can do more than just make phone calls- they can also text, IM (instant message), send emails, and Skype. The two most common forms of communicated though are making a phone call and texting. So texting or calling, which one is more helpful and convenient?
Texting or SMS (short message service) is when a person types a short message on the cellular device to another person. Sending a text message is convenient because it is a faster way to get in touch with someone. I know a lot of people who do not even their phones, but would respond to a text immediately. Texting is more private. When a person is in a public place, like a library, they will not disturb other and no one would know what his or her conversation is about. An individual can also send a picture through a text. For example, instead of describing an item over the phone, a person can send a picture. We can see many useful things that texting bring to us. By texting, we can think clearly before we intend to say something.

Texting vs. Calling

...Texting vs. Calling What would we do without cell phones? Has anyone ever tried to leave their phone at home just to see how much it’s really needed in their everyday life? It’s a lot harder than it sounds. Technology has grown so much in the past ten years then would ever be known. From little black and white flip phones to tablets with apps, games, music and pretty much anything that could ever be wanted just in the palm of the hand. Everyday someone new is signing up for cell phone services. Whether it be AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, or US cellular, we are dealt with the decision of what is more important; minutes or data plan. Minutes are the allowed time per month to receive incoming and outgoing calls. Whereas, data plan is the allowed text messages and pictures that can be sent. Now most cell phone plans come with unlimited text and call minutes due to high amounts of each being placed each month. It seems as though text messaging is among the most popular ways of communication. It can be quick and easy, save time and battery life, and it keeps all conversations private from the public. Although texting messaging and phone calls aim to accomplish the same task, they both have their differences. Text messaging has been, world widely, the main mode of communication. It economically benefits people by having lower prices than regular calls. Text messages can also be used as proof, whether or not right information was sent to another person. Privacy...

Calling vs Texting

...Kevin Dvorak 4-4-14 Rough draft College comp According to CNN, Americans ages 18-29 send and receive an average of nearly 88 text messages per day, compared to 17 phone calls. It is necessary to have social skills. In today’s society, the number of phone calls people make has declined the last 5 years. While texting has many good uses such as a way to quickly communicate and spread information, it takes away from the human interaction you get from a face to face conversation and even a phone call. Today you see way too many fatal deaths from texting and driving just because someone could not wait five minutes. Texting has led to more forms of bulling, because now that you can screen shot a message, something you say can be taken and never deleted. I can say from personal experience that the majority or people who say mean things over text would never say it in person or on the phone and in most cases act completely different that who they seemed to be over text. Being able to understand someone’s body language is very important. Texting however does serve a purpose. For example, if I was in a library or in a very crowed and loud room it would make no sense call that person when the quality of a text stays the same no matter where you are and what your surroundings are. Screen shoting can also be used in a very positive way. If I need to save very important information I can have it in my phone at all times instead of writing it down and potentially losing it. I know...

Texting vs. Calling

...Darren Teamer ENGL 1301 Jason English 19 November 2012 Arguing Vs. Fighting Sometimes we tend to come to disagreements with one another about things we believe in or feel strongly about, and these differences could result in an argument or a fight. Arguing is a discussion of opposing point of views normally striving to persuade or prove a point and fighting is an intentional act of violence (throwing physical blows or use of weapons) to harm the opposition. In this essay I will distinguish between the characteristics of an argument and a fight that demonstrate the effectiveness that both choices could have on the outcome of the specific situation. An argument is a verbal conversation, a fight of words. In an argument the individual would usually state claims or reasons to why their opinion is correct or superior to that of their antagonist. Discussing each others’ disagreements in a calm and orderly fashion could resolve the matter, however all arguments don’t end in this way. Some arguments can become less effective when those involved start yelling, cutting each other’s sentences short with interruption, and even becoming disrespectful with one another at times. This method of arguing is more ineffective because the communication being made between the individuals is unclear. Fighting is an actual physical altercation. In a fight both parties have had an issue of some sort in the past and one or both individuals figured the best way to resolve the issue would be to...

At&T Text Messaging Case

...AT&T TEXT MESSAGING CASE QUESTIONS 1. Describe the cost behavior in the wireless industry. What are the key cost drivers? What are the implications of this cost behavior for cost-volume-profit (CVP) relationships? The cost behavior is difficult in the wireless industry because the key components making up the costs for texting and wireless calls are the same. While there has been an increase in the number of text messages sent, almost to the point where more time is spent texting than calling, it’s hard to differentiate how the costs should be split. The key cost driver’s include several factors ranging from the fixed costs of infrastructure (purchasing servers, cell towers, etc), services (billing, accounting, maintenance, etc), and variable costs (storage on servers). The implications of the CVP is that it is difficult to determine what portion of the fixed/variable costs are associated with texting vs. other cell phone operations that use all of the same cost drivers. 2. What kinds of margins does text messaging produce? It’s difficult to say exactly what type of margins texting produces, but I think that the best way to determine it would be to allocate a weighted-average contribution margin to determine the approximate number. The fixed costs such as servers should have a 90/10 allocation because text messages take up little bandwidth, but all other costs should be allocated 50/50 because the total income from the two operations seems to be about equal...

Sms Texting

...SMS Messaging In my English 1301 class, all of the students have not only adapted to the rising technology, but they have embraced texting to the point where they have become entirely dependent on it. Communicating has become more prompt and convenient then it has ever been before. Starting with basic e-mails to instant messaging on famous websites, like Facebook or Twitter. However, these abbreviations are starting to affect the way people communicate with one another and their writing skills. Users of these abbreviations are becoming more, and more psychologically depend on it. When a person sends a text message, it is usually in a modern language that originated from online when chatting. Users have adapted this shorter, quicker abbreviated way of messaging in order to gets their point across in 140 characters or less. Just because something is easier, quicker and shorter is not also right, and it is starting to affect people psychologically and their able to mental write simple paper. Text massaging abbreviations is inappropriate for school, work and formal writing assignments. A user needs to know the difference in how to use formal vs. informal writing that predates text messaging. An individual can ask anyone that has a cell phone, and that person would say, “That they would rather text someone than call”. Why would someone rather text than speak to that person. When a user uses abbreviation, they overlook most of what they have learned about how to properly communicate...

Smartphone Use Can Be Life Threatening

...innovations bring more to the consumer’s finger tips than ever before. Smartphones can now be used as onboard GPS units, they have the ability to stream video or watch downloaded movies, texting, calling, almost anything imaginable can be accomplished with these newer devices but what they cannot do is improve a drivers skills or driving habits, in fact in most cases these devices impair one’s ability to drive safely. Smartphone/cell phone use needs to be banned from use in automobiles except to use for hands free communication only. How can this problem be addressed so that the drivers of this Nation can feel safe without wondering what the driver next to them is doing on their cell phone. A Federal proposal that would ensure a nationwide ban on cell phone use while driving would help accomplish this. The proposal would allow officers to stop any driver that is using a cell phone as a primary offense. This means that if you have a cell phone in your hands for any reason you can be stopped for it. Why is such a harsh course of action required, as stated these unnecessary distractions can lead to serious injury or loss of life and that is a cost too great to ignore. This proposal would carry stiff punishments as well, since it has been shown that there is little difference between driving intoxicated or texting/cell phone use then the punishment should be similar. Society expects...

Social Networking

... A Report By: Blake Hogan, Emily Gilbert, Megan Leckington, and Chris Morris 1 Abstract: In today’s day and age, most everyone in our society has and uses a cell phone. Most of those who use cell phones also use the SMS text messaging that these phones feature. This study takes a look at some of the effects and potential problems arising from the use of this text messaging. A survey of students and instructors at Lane Community College found that 70% of those surveyed believed that texting had harmful effects on students writing skills. However, studies that were analyzed found that texting is actually beneficial. While 54% of teenagers text others on a daily basis only 33% of teenagers talk to others face-to-face, yet it is too early in research to draw a conclusion on whether texting is harmful to their social skills. Most people know that text messaging while driving is very dangerous, yet the studies analyzed as well as the surveys conducted show that some people are still willing to take that risk. Blackberry 10 Features

...Arnaldo Perez Consumer Behavior Current Topics Assignment 2/13/13 Blackberry 10: The topic I will be covering is the Blackberry 10. Upon its initial press-conference (no official U.S. release yet), many smart phone users turned it’s eye towards the former leader of smart phones to see what the rumored Blackberry 10 would consist of, and with much anticipation there was a lot of praise as well as skepticism. The Blackberry team (run by Research In Motion: RIM) displayed the new models: the touch screen Z10 and its QWERTY Keyboard counterpart (for those who still demanded a keyboard). Features that were innovative to the new Blackberry 10 (aside from full-screen touch capability, video chat that other phones offered) is the brilliant Blackberry HUB. The HUB allowed for easier view of the things that “everything important to you easy to view in a single space”. The HUB is powered by single swipes to view messages, get in and out of menus, programs for easier multitasking, therefore leaving the pages that you are currently on in menu blocks (similar to the windows phone square tiles). The big issue with the new Blackberry 10, are trying to gain back all the customers that it lost to iPhones and Android powered devices. Blackberry has not kept up with the ways of these smart phones since 2011 (when Android had grown in popularity). This brand is a cult classic, famous for its comfortable size and keyboard, it lacked in many areas. In a market where it is now pre-dominantly...

Depending on Technology

...Computers are convenient devices that many of us use daily. They have become a part of our lives, allowing us to work from home, stay in contact with friends or family, and keep track of important issues like finances, stocks and international news. There is literally a whole world of knowledge at our fingertips as soon as we log onto the World Wide Web. But have we become too reliant? Everybody remembers the sheer panic that occurred throughout the world when the millennium approached, talks of super viruses and quite literally, the end of civilization as we knew it. There are now computers made for three year olds! What happened to good old fashioned books? What happens to our literacy and grammatical skills if everything we write is automatically spellchecked by our computer? My verdict is that they are there to enhance our lives but we must not revolve around technology. We have to remember to go out once in awhile and experience the world. Not to be cooped up in a house spending hours watching Cops. Now I’m not saying that all technology is bad and we should stop the use of it completely. Computers make our lives easier and give us new ways to learn about the things that we’re interested in. They make it easier to record and organize information and entertain us with nearly endless variety of games. Medical operations and new advancements in the medical field have helped save millions of lives. An article by ABC news collaborated with MedPage Today to find out the...
