Textual Analysis Coursework Essay

For this essay I shall be comparing Skyfall (2012) to Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) both in the spy genre of films. I will be focusing on the way both films portray the differences in roles between male and female characters. I chose Skyfall from the 007 series; due to the fact M (Judi Dench) plays a more significant role within the film. It also takes a different approach on the character of Eve Moneypenny (Naomie Harris), as she is shown doing fieldwork alongside Bond (Daniel Craig) at the start of the film. Of course like any other Bond film, Skyfall also includes women who 007 will form a ‘relationship’ with (normally ending in their demise). I will be discussing if women in Skyfall are shown in a stereotypical and perhaps borderline sexiest way.

My other choice of film, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol also stars female characters, although they have a more predominant role throughout the film then Skyfall. One of Ethan Hunt’s (Tom Cruise) team members is Jane (Paula Patton) and she is one of the main leading characters. Till around halfway in the film, a primary antagonist is Sabine Moreau (Lea Seydoux). It could still be said that these two characters, despite having a big role within the film, have been somewhat subjected to being portrayed in an idealistic way of women throughout the film.

Skyfall is the 23rd instalment in the 007 franchises and was released on October 23th 2012. A new director on the Bond scene directed it: Sam Mendes, but Eon Productions produced it, which has been the company responsible for all of the other Bond movies in the past. It sees the return of Daniel Craig as James Bond making it his third 007 film since his debut in Casino Royale (2006). Judi Dench continues her role of M and Javier Bardem takes the reins of the villain in Skyfall as Silva. Bonds secretary/assistant,

...Media Studies - Textual Analysis Part A This advertisement circulated around 1953 for Del Monte Ketchup (Lars, 2009), or as Australian’s call it, tomato sauce. On first appearance this text screams sexist as it frames a well dressed woman of the aforementioned era with manicured nails, perfect make up, not a hair out of place, looking suitably surprised by a bottle of tomato sauce. The image is anchored by the words “You mean a woman can open it?” with the word “woman” underlined to suggest that women are the weaker sex and previously unable to open a bottle of sauce without the assistance of a man. (Tremblay & Tremblay, 2012) writes that this ad depicts women as technically unskilled or as sex objects. Within the frame of the advertisement is the ideology of the 1950’s woman, the text which anchors the ad and part of the bottle of sauce. This acts as a slight form of metonymy as part of the bottle represents the whole bottle, or, all the bottles of that particular brand of sauce. At the time this advertisement went to print the Del Monte logo at the top of the bottle was most likely recognised by that general demographic. There is nothing else within the frame of this advert, no husband to suggest this new sauce bottle is for anyone to use and no family in the background suggesting this is for the ‘kept woman’ who takes care of her man. Furthermore, we can’t see her posture but we can assume her posture is straight and confident by what we can see of her head, neck...

...Maquillez Glover Prof. Atkinson English 1101 7:00 28 October 2013 Textual Analysis No matter what car someone is driving, a seat belt is the most effective and safest thing to wear. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in seven people do not buckle their seat belt when entering the car, and no matter how many times those people might get tickets or hear about fatal accidents and victims involved not wearing their seat belts, those people still refuse. Seat belts can help save lives; in 2009, 33,000 people died in a car accident and 2.2 million people were injured and half of those people were not wearing a seat belt (“Policy Impact…”). Also, seventy percent of those people involved in the wrecks were driving a passenger vehicle or truck (“Policy Impact…”). Even if someone is in the back seat of the biggest pick-up truck, they need to put on their seat belt, because any crazy accident can happen. Just like in any other car, a truck is likely to flip when involved in a wreck or losing control of the vehicle. In the ad posted by Kentucky State Police, buckling up in a truck is extremely important. The ad is implying that it does not matter how tough the truck looks, as long as the person is buckled up inside, the truck with be “tougher”. On the ad it states, seat belts reduced fatalities in trucks by eighty percent. To help show that the truck would be tougher, the bed of the truck and the cab are separated, and attached to the bed is a seat...

...Zach Dedin Dr. Myklebust Going Deep in a Major League Field The year was 2014, the date April 15th. On a sunny day in the town of Denver, a Colorado kid was about to do something that no other high school student-athlete in the state of Colorado, would do that year. Holy Family High School, school size approximately six hundred, located in Broomfield, Colorado, has a baseball team that gets to participate in a game at Coors Field against a rival opponent as the only Class 3A team. This year the Holy Family Tigers renewed their old rivalry with the Erie Tigers, a team just north of the high school. This rivalry, one renewed every fall with football, was now going to be renewed on the diamond–this was our chance to show the state how good we were. Coming off of a state championship, with eleven seniors, we knew we had more talent than most teams in the state, but just had to prove it. This was our chance. Every baseball player in the state of Colorado dreams of playing at this world class facility, and even more kids from across the country dream of hitting a homerun at a Major League field. After all the ticket sales and hard work we put into playing there on April 15th, the date had arrived. Every player and coach on the team was excited and ready to play. Playing against a top 4A school, the classification above Holy Family, the Tigers acted as if this were any ordinary game. Leading up to the event, the players went to classes, took tests, and went about their business...

...researcher was at the farm about 4 more hours each week working on an assignment in which she had to train a steer. During her time there, the researcher noted that many dairy cattle had their horns removed as calves. While the researcher did not know the procedure that was followed to dehorn these calves, the textual analysis did not show the procedure in a good light. During textual analysis, the researcher examined sources on topics related to cosmetic and convenience surgeries in animals. To find sources, the researcher searched relevant topics in West Virginia University’s library database. Once search results appeared, the researcher examined those sources that appeared to be the most up-to-date and thorough. The researcher also...

Textual Analysis Of Food

...The understanding of food influences a person’s decision regarding what they should eat on a daily basis. The understanding of food can also be broken down into five categories: health, body image, race, class, and gender. These factors pressure people on not only what to eat, but also where to eat. The BK Veggie Burger has an interesting background as well as challenges all the factors noted. It was brought to the United States menu in 2013, while being available on menus across other countries, such as India. The burger is comprised of a MorningStar Farms Garden Veggie Patty with lettuce, tomatoes, white onions, pickles, ketchup and mayo topped with a toasted sesame seed bun. Burger King is using the MorningStar patty for the first couple of years until they see sustainable profit for the veggie burger. The BK Veggie Burger along with Burger King has now created an interesting argument on healthy foods in fast food chains. The BK Veggie Burger challenges the way people view a meal through not only health, body image, race, class, and gender, but also from an author’s opinion and portrayal of what is and isn't good for you. Health is a major factor when it comes to the pressures of choosing what you should or shouldn't eat. Michael Pollan once wrote in his article Unhappy Meals, “Eat Food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” (Pollan) Therefore it is easy to assume that Pollan would recommend the BK Veggie Burger because it is mostly made up of plants. He did not stand alone in his...

Persuasive Textual Analysis

...“Creativity without strategy is art, creativity with strategy is called advertising.” Jef Richards. People pay good money for a good advertisement. One that promotes the product effectively, while also connecting to people through some way. In this class we have talked about a couple techniques that companies use to make their product stand out from the rest. Advertising is everything. It's the first thing people see, its the way that they hear about the company, and it's the thing that helps make the buyers choice easier or harder to make between two similar objects. Successful companies now how to reach everyone by using the right words, and by trying to appeal to everyone. As the one of the worlds biggest fast food branches McDonalds is easily recognizable in any country. How does a franchise get to be so big, and be so popular with such a large amount of different people. Simply, they have something for everyone; ice cream, hamburgers, french fries, chicken sandwiches, fish, coffee, breakfast food. All these things appeal to at least one person, except for maybe the fitness nuts, but even now the infamous McNuggets are all one-hundred percent real white meat. McDonalds continues to reach out to the unreachable, while still carrying the fast food restaurant name. They use commercials, constantly changing the technique from evidence of why you should eat here to purely entertainment value. Sometimes after watching a commercial, you just sit there thinking about that same catchy...

Gilgamesh Textual Analysis

...Upon completion of some of the readings, my understanding of myth is beginning to change slightly. After completing The Epic of Gilgamesh, I started to re-think the events in the book and apply different theories of myth to them. I applied the theory of binaries developed by Lévi-Strauss to analyze both Gilgamesh and Enkidu. Gilgamesh stands for almost everything human made, culture, and the opposite of purity and untouched my nature. Enkidu on the other hand was created out of nature; he stands for everything earthy, nature, pure, and untouched. As the theory states, they are two opposites who do not appear to go together. I also applied Girard’s way of thinking about myth to the story as well. The violence that occurred was always justified in almost a sacrificial way (one thing must happen in order for another to follow). There was also rivalry between Gilgamesh and other characters, such as Humbaba. Both Gilgamesh and Humbaba are big and powerful and because both of them are, Gilgamesh must conquer Humbaba to resolve this rivalry between them. The last way of thinking that I applied was Campbell’s theory. The whole epic centers on the journey that Gilgamesh and Enkidu take. As Campbell states, they have the Hero’s Journey. There is also two stories occurring at the same time; one is the journey of Gilgamesh and Enkidu, the other is the story of overcoming nature and of culture conquering nature. As well as applying theories of myth to The Epic of Gilgamesh...

...book as a material or physical artifact. Analytical bibliography, the cornerstone of descriptive bibliography, investigates the printing and all physical features of a book that yield evidence establishing a book's history and transmission (Feather 10). It is the preliminary phase of bibliographic description and provides the vocabulary, principles and techniques of analysis that descriptive bibliographers apply and on which they base their descriptive practice. Descriptive bibliographers follow specific conventions and associated classification in their description. Titles and title pages are transcribed in a quasi-facsimile style and representation. Illustration, typeface, binding, paper, and all physical elements related to identifying a book follow formulaic conventions, as Bower's established in his foundational opus, The Principles of Bibliographic Description. The thought expressed in this book expands substantively on W. W. Greg’s groundbreaking theory that argued for the adoption of formal bibliographic principles (Greg 29). Fundamentally, analytical bibliography is concerned with objective, physical analysis and history of a book while...

Textual Analysis Of Frankenstein

... Horror film has seen its peaks and its downfall, after Edison studios’ adaption of Frankenstein in 1910, the horror industry had officially introduced itself in commercial film. Since then, up to somewhat the 1980s, there have been tremendous developments that changed horror film. After the 80s it is said that there were definitely many good horror movies, but there has not been one truly outstanding in development, however, the urge to frighten the ones that dare to watch has become stronger and more limitless. We all know what it feels like to watch a horror scene and feel your heart beating faster and your body tensening. Something that many of us have not done, most probably because there is no time to focus on detail, is really look at the elements to see why we are frightened. To determine these elements I will be analyzing two scenes from two horror movies. I wanted to stay within reach of the highly developed period and one from within the past ten years, mainly because technology has increased so much that there must be very interesting elements to be found. The movies I chose are The Exorcist (1973), which we all know and is the first of many movies about exorcisms, also the very first to involve religion, and The Conjuring (2013) which is now known as one of the most frightening modern films, having a spin off called Annabelle and a sequel, a sequel to Annabelle and a third The Conjuring are both expected to come in 2017. The Conjuring tells the story of a 1970s...

Textual Analysis Of Macbeth

...This article is a general summary with a miniscule emphasis on the characters that reside in Macbeth. Amanda covers the main intentions of each character from the dark and impulsive actions of Macbeth ending towards the wickedness of the witches. This article is generally captivating of the mentalities of the differing characters and how each one relates to one another. This article is just a general summary on the basis of the main characters but goes into a shallow-deep intricate detail covering morbidity and uses of colorful wording. The article itself was obviously intended for those looking to read Macbeth or those who have yet to read it as it is more of an alongside critique. ...A Dozen Words and a Picture Goes a Long Way Advertisements are a way for advertisers to sell their product to the masses. Though different products are being sold, the method of selling tends to be the same. There are a finite number of techniques, appeals, and images used by advertisers, which can be skillfully combined to make an effective advertisement, such as this advertisement. By examining the image, claims, and appeals of this advertisement, it is clear that this advertisement effectively creates the point that Soft & Dri deodorant is strong enough to stay dry all day. This advertisement attaches personalities to images and places noticeable text to demonstrate the product’s point. This is apparent, due to the fact that the eye is drawn to the size and placement of the words. The words “Strong & Beautiful” are the largest text on the page, bolded, and white, making those particular words very noticeable. It’s this eye-catching text that the consumer will read. By making those words obvious, the advertisement is demonstrating its point that the product is strong. The picture itself, of the woman dressed in camouflage and showing her muscles, also helps make the product’s point. Clearly, the picture is of a supposedly strong woman, and by association, the product will also be viewed as strong. The image and the text provide the idea of strength to the product, which will then contribute to the advertisement’s overall meaning. By using different kinds of appeals, the advertisement...

...A Guide to Writing the Literary Analysis Essay I. INTRODUCTION: the first paragraph in your essay. It begins creatively in order to catch your reader’s interest, provides essential background about the literary work, and prepares the reader for your major thesis. The introduction must include the author and title of the work as well as an explanation of the theme to be discussed. Other essential background may include setting, an introduction of main characters, etc. The major thesis goes in this paragraph usually at the end. Because the major thesis sometimes sounds tacked on, make special attempts to link it to the sentence that precedes it by building on a key word or idea. A) Creative Opening/Hook: the beginning sentences of the introduction that catch the reader’s interest. Ways of beginning creatively include the following: 1) A startling fact or bit of information  Example: Nearly two hundred citizens were arrested as witches during the Salem witch scare of 1692. Eventually nineteen were hanged, and another was pressed to death (Marks 65). 2) A snatch of dialogue between two characters  Example: “It is another thing. You [Frederic Henry] cannot know about it unless you have it.” “ Well,” I said. “If I ever get it I will tell you [priest].” (Hemingway 72). With these words, the priest in Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms sends the hero, Frederic, in search of the ambiguous “it” in his life. 3) A meaningful quotation (from the book you are analyzing...

His mother’s death and his father’s grief leave Charlie feeling isolated at school, at home, and even at the junior-lifesaving training class he attends, where he practices his lifesaving skills on seventh-graders, otherwise known as sevies. In the excerpt below, Charlie has returned home after class and has walked to the creek to go fishing. from Emory’s Gift by W. Bruce Cameron 1 During the spring the waters of the creek were dark and cold, a sharp contrast from the milky pool water from which I’d been saving sevies all morning. From bank to bank the stream was more than thirty feet. In the summer, though, with the runoff down to a trickle, the creek bed was mainly dry, littered with rocks and mud and tree branches. The creek itself shrank back until it was only six feet wide, hugging the far bank and deep enough to swim in. That’s where the fish liked to lurk, up under the tree root overhang. From the base of our hill the creek had only another couple hundred yards of independence before it joined the river, adding...
