The Harder Right Over the Easier Wrong
The United States Army has seven core values that help structure Army Ethics, and selfless service is one of them. Army Ethics is what every member of the Army internalizes and lives by. There’s no difference between living by the Army Ethics now and living by it back in World War II. In the reading, “Thank God for the Atom Bomb” by Paul Fussell, the author supports the United States’ decision to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. Fussell fills his writing with emotion and logic to demonstrate how dropping the atomic bomb was a selfless and necessary action to protect the American people.
Selfless service is putting the needs of others before the needs of one’s self. It means one will be faced to choose the harder right over the easier wrong. In the Army, selfless service is taking care of the lives of the men and women that are risking their lives for the nation. That is exactly what President Truman was doing when he decided to drop the atomic bomb. …show more content…
He discusses how men would be crying when they were sent out because they knew they were going to die. The men had no hope. How humane is it to send soldiers out to their ultimate death? These men signed up for war, not suicide. As a leader, the decision to drop the atomic bomb was to put the needs of the American soldiers first. America had to act, they couldn’t just keep sending out bodies and returning them back with a flag over them. Fussell’s entire argument supports the decision to bomb Hiroshima because it saved the lives of thousand American soldiers. While it did have a large number of casualties, the decision was made to save American people. There’s nothing more selfless than that. War is not pretty and war is not fair. Nothing is more important than the safety of the men and women that a leader leads, even if it means dropping an atomic
