...Jorge Diaz December 16, 2011 Period 1 AP World History Mr. Liles Two Sides to One Story The lineage of Abraham, Isaac-and Ishmael, a story of life and death, in two different perspectives, but which one is correct? The Quran does not state the name of the son that Abraham was commanded to sacrifice by Allah (The Quran. New Delhi 37:99–113), in the Bible Abraham is commanded to sacrifice his son Isaac (Bible 22;5, 8). Islamic scholars believe that the son promised to Abraham was Isaac, but when Allah commands Abraham to kill his only son, knowing that Ishmael was born first, this is the son Allah wanted Abraham to sacrifice (islamreligion.com). Judeo-Christian scholars will argue that Ishmael is not a direct son to Abraham as he was born from a servant, commonly explained as from a concubine (islamreligion.com). One might bring themselves to believe automatically what religion they are more inclined towards, whether it be; Christianity or Islam, as there is no legitimate answer to the question-was Isaac the “chosen” son, or was it Ishmael? In reality no one will ever come to agree on this question, as this is a question which touches emotional and stable foundations in ones life. The story of Abraham and Isaac in both Christianity and Islam states that the promised son was Isaac, and that Ishmael was conceived from a servant, but they both differ in who was the chosen son. This eludes to a more prominent question...

...share how one event from the 1960s has influenced our personal life, our career choice, and the global community. It also asks us to discuss how our own life would be different if one specific event of the 1960s had never occurred and how different the world would be if that same event had never occurred. As the mother of bi-racial twin girls and as relates to the Civil Rights Movement, I thought this a very easy assignment, I was wrong. After writing several pages of text – the brutal honesty of my life - it occurred to me that I need to separate the project due to my own personal biases. Please let it be known that I am grateful for the Civil Rights movement and equal opportunity for all – race, creed, color and sex. I have a very good understanding of the Civil Rights Movement and will attempt to depict that in part two of my paper, however I have my own story as well and is that that I am going to include in part 1. Understand this is not a story I frequently share and it is a part of my life that I try to forget. It is a long story and I will attempt to give a very simple version, though I will also admit my first thoughts were to alter it – to make this project easier. My thoughts are that perhaps some of you can learn something from tale, perhaps I will make a change in the need to continue with our drastic need to forget and forgive – the need to make a future and stop living in the past. Part One – One Woman’s Story Though the...

...When I was younger, I always assumed that anytime someone I loved needed help or support there would always be a obvious right choice that I could make or action that I could take to help them. However, this idea was shattered one fall night as I saw my best friend kneeling on the bathroom floor with her finger down her throat. Tears were streaming down her face and the thick scent of vomit lingered in the air. And all I, her closest friend since second grade, could do was stand there, paralyzed by uncertainty. Frozen there, dozens of thoughts passed through my mind at once. This cannot be what I think it is. Why would she be doing this? And the most crushing thought of all: How did I not know? I’m her best friend. Why couldn’t I do anything?...

...Stephen King: Two Books, One Story In 1974, the world was first introduced to Stephen King through the publication of Carrie. Since then, King has released over fifty-four novels, short stories and essays (King, Written Works). His themes are vast and touch such subjects as aliens, telekinesis, life in prison, trucks coming to life, and the end of the world. In 1999, a car accident almost ended Stephen King’s life. After his recovery, he published five novels that were received with poor sales and unkind reviews. When Under the Dome was released in 2009, it showed that Stephen King was returning to a formula that worked so well for him in a previous book called The Stand. To understand these two books, one must first understand their author. Stephen King was born September 21, 1947. His father abandoned his mother, older brother, and himself when he was two (King, Writing 3). His mother, Ruth took a succession of poorly paid menial jobs, leaving her sons in the care of various relatives. Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and then Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. He attended college at the University of Maine, and that is where he met his wife Tabitha, who was also a student. In 1970, he graduated from the University of Maine at Orono with a B.A. in English, and his first child was born. Stephen worked as a high school English teacher for a few years in Maine while he started writing his first novel Carrie. Carrie was an instant hit and an overnight...

I was only 4 at the time. She shielded me with her body, I still remember them laughing while they continue beating her. They skin on my face, arms, and legs were chafed off as we were kicked over and over again causing as to slide on the paving. While I was screaming and crying an adult finally came over only to laugh and say "That is probably enough... for today anyway." After another couple of kicks and one spitting on us they left. ...How does Hosseini tell the story in chapter one? In chapter one we are introduced to the narrator in first person however we are not told who. We are immediately aware something bad has happened in the winter of 1975 as Hosseini uses the weather to have an impact on the event in the first sentence and continues to describe what went on in the next few sentences. This stands out to the reader and comes across as the main event in the book, the thing the reader wants to find out. Hosseini seems to be using a double frame yet we don’t know what has happened but we know we are going to find out later on. Time is significant as it is used in the chapter heading and in the first sentence, as a reader we think Hosseini uses time to show his feelings and to tell the story through them. Hosseini quickly introduces us to a place: the ‘alley’, and uses a lot of strong verbs such as ‘crouching’ and ‘crumbling’ which also mirrors how he feels about what happened. The first paragraph of the chapter is to set the story which is in contrast to the second one where there is a flashback to ‘one day last summer’ another link to time. In the first paragraph Hosseini tells us about the past in Pakistan whereas in the second paragraph he mentions San Francisco so we know the story is going to change places. The story is in chronological order, even though it is told the date of the chapter is 2001, the story being told is in order and the story is kept in the past. The characters introduced in the...

...How does Fitzgerald tell the story in chapter one of the novel ‘The Great Gatsby’? In the opening chapter of the novel ‘The Great Gatsby’ Fitzgerald uses a variety of techniques such as intra-fictional narration from Nick and change in from to introduce the characters so as to keep the readers interested and to make the chapter memorable. The very begging of the novel is written in autobiographical fashion so as to allow the main narrator to introduce himself to the reader. It is through the use of Bildungsroman that we learn of nicks privileged upbringing Once again the ending is set in natural light with nick returning home in the moonlight to find the infamous Gatsby “regarding the silver pepper of the stars”. In this final romantic setting the readers, and nick, are introduced to Gatsby as “stretching his arms out” towards “the green light” at the end of daisy’s dock as if it were a religious icon he was longing to get closer to, it could also be interpreted that this light is almost his interpretation of his light to heaven with the oxymoron of it being green ( which is associated with nature, freedom and generally as a go sign) and the fact it is a warning light used to tell boats to stay away showing his confusion and unrequited longing for another. In this first glimpse of Gatsby, Fitzgerald not only links him with the romance and purity of the natural light of stars and moonlight, but his dream is symbolically identified as being false and artificial, thus ending...

...One critic states the "Othello’s story is the perfect illustration of a man’s tragic vulnerability". Do you think Othello’s downfall is a consequence of his own weaknesses or is he a victim, subject to circumstances beyond his control? Many different interpretations link to Othello’s downfall, including the part Iago and Desdemona play, and how the main character’s personality and actions affect the fate of the other characters. A point much contested by critics is how Shakespeare presents Othello himself: some, such as A.C. Bradley, hold the view that the General is a noble tragic hero, whereas F.R. Leavis would contradict this by claiming Othello to be a weak man whose fatal flaw is jealousy. Iago is a key instrument in Othello’s downfall and uses deception to plant the idea of Desdemona’s infidelity. He adroitly persuades Othello to accept this idea in a very short length of time. Shakespeare first uses Iago to develop the theme of perception when Iago hints at the topic of Desdemona’s supposed affair in 3:3. Iago then claims to have asked about Cassio ‘But for a satisfaction of my thought’. The idea of ‘thinking' is repeated many times after this, and is significant because of the way Shakespeare has the characters appear to perceive each other – for example how people see Iago, who is mentioned many times to be ‘honest’ – Othello even says ‘I know thou’rt full of love and honesty’ – and this dramatic irony allows him to successfully carry out his deception. The audience...

...Introduction to Literature Professor: * Every short story generally follows a set of features. Whether it is the plot, a conflict, the setting, the time frame, the characters, the point of view, the themes, the styles, tone or the symbolism, (Clugston, 2014) short stories all have their similarities and differences. These similarities and differences are evident in the stories How I Met My Husband and The Story of an Hour when the main characters take journeys in life surrounding sad, emotional, and joyful events. These stories both follow a chronological pattern in order to create suspense and drama in stories that create a different style ending in their story; one is a happy ending and the other is sad. Both of these stories take place in different times, times that established different standards and views for all women. The women these stories are center around are both looking for love and happiness, however, the needs and wants of each ladies definition is slightly different as examined by their marriages. * Throughout life, people take on adventures full of journeys, trials, and tribulations. During life, most people will go through the steps of growth and development and one day may face marriage. Marriage is something that everyone seems to view differently these days and as time has elapsed, the definition of marriage has changed. There are quite a few people who have different views one what marriage is and what they should do or contribute to in...

...The Judah and Tamar story in Genesis, situated right after Joseph’s brothers sell him off to slavery, recounts the story of how Tamar, Judah’s daughter-in-law, uses her cunning and her wiles to humiliate Judah after he fails to give her his youngest son, Shechem. Its conclusion is then immediately followed by the narration of Joseph’s rise to power in Egypt. Why is such a story, a story with overtly sexual overtones, situated as is, interrupting a story about the relationship between kin? Upon closer inspection, one will notice the many parallels between the characters of the preceding events and those in the actual narrative – most notably, the link between Joseph and Tamar, and their shared inability to act against the oppression of another party. Establishing such a link, then, the Judah...

...A. Introduction One of the ways to tell and educate the children about moral values is by telling a story. At school, teachers usually tell the students some inspiring stories which usually are fiction, such as fables, legend and other folktales. One of the most famous stories told by teachers and parents is Kancil (Mousedeer) story. Kancil story is kind of fable as the characters in the story are animals. Fables, which frequently feature animal characters, are told with the intention of educating the listener or the reader[1]. The stories which often use animal characters are memorable way of reinforcing moral and ethical precepts and of teaching practical lessons on how to get along in the world[2]. Kancil (Mousedeer) is one of the most famous characters in a fable in Indonesia and some other Asian countries. There are a lot of stories using Kancil as the main character. In Indonesia the story about Kancil is influenced by the culture of the people in one region. Therefore, as Indonesia has a lot of ethnics with their culture, it makes Kancil stories are told in different version and different name based on the language, custom, value and religion of one society. For example, Aceh and other Malay people call Kancil as Pelanduk with the famous story “Hikayat Pelanduk Jenaka”; while in North Sumatera, Bataknese people call it Paes. However, still all the stories about Kancil describe him with the same character. Kancil is usually described as a clever, tricky and...
