The 1920’s: Baseball Uniform
The decade of the 1920’s is often characterized as a period of American prosperity and optimism. This was the Jazz Age, the decade of the flappers. The 1920’s opened with an explosion of color and the wailing sounds and fast rhythms of jazz and energetic dancing. It was a time of tremendous change in America. America was one of the victors in the First World War and it enjoyed a period of great prosperity in the twenties. The Americans were opposed to anything that might drag them into another European war. Many Americans simply wanted to enjoy the prosperity that had developed in the previous decade and felt that foreign entanglements would threaten it. For the next decade America kept to herself for the most part.
Most Americans enjoyed a high standard of living. Food was plentiful and cheap thanks to the vast quantity produced on American farms. More and more people bought their own houses through mortgages. Thanks to Henry Ford and mass production, one could buy a ford for $290. It was the “Roaring Twenties,” the decade of bath tub gin, the model T, the $5 work day, the first transatlantic flight, and the movie. It was the great age of popular entertainment. Among the world of entertainment, there were sports.
Baseball’s growing popularity in the 1920’s can be measured by structural and cultural changes that helped transform the game. Ballparks were being constructed left and right. In 1920 the Cubs Field was opened and in 1926 re-named to Wrigley Field, there was also Sportsman’s Park for the St. Louis Cardinals. The emergence of sports pages in daily urban newspapers and the enormous popularity of radio broadcasts of baseball games were linked to the hype of baseball during this decade. The urban ballpark was thought as a meeting ground for Americans of all classes and backgrounds to come and enjoy a day of entertainment.
Americans have long loved sports. The first American professional sports team, baseball’s Cincinnati Red Stockings, debuted in 1869. Traditionally, baseball had been America’s favorite sport, and baseball players its favorite athletes. Baseball was called the national pastime, but it was not until the Roaring Twenties that sports became big business and a new generation of athletes arose to capture the American imagination.
The twenties began with a shocking sports scandal. In September 1920 rumors spread that the 1919 World Series had been fixed. There were increasingly credible reports that gamblers had bribed several Chicago players to play to lose. Then many White Sox stars began to confess to participating in the fix. The news rocked public confidence in idolized baseball players and brought attention to the sport. “The Black Sox” as the crooked White Sox were known, went to trial. The team owners recognized the need to restore public confidence in their tarnished game so they created the office of baseball commissioner.
The first baseball commissioner did not restore baseball’s popularity single-handedly. Kenesaw Mountain Landis had help from the most popular and beloved athlete in the history of sports, George Herman “Babe” Ruth. His powerful hitting made fans forget about the Black Sox. In 1920 he hit a record 54 homers and led the league with 137 RBIs. It seemed that no one would ever have a more spectacular season, but in 1921 Ruth topped it, with 59 homers, 171 RBIs, 177 runs scored and 144 walks. The Yankee dynasty had begun. Everything the Babe did, on and off the field, fascinated the public:
“The hader you grip the bat,” Ruth once explained, “the more you can swing through the ball, and the farther the ball will go. I swing big, with everything I got. I hit big, or I miss big. I like to live as big as I can.”
When Americans think of baseball, they think of the players and when they think of the players, the uniform is recreated in the memories of millions of Americans. The baseball uniform has not always looked the way it does today. It was about this time that the sun collar began to lose favor and the baseball shirt first took on an appearance somewhat like those of today. In the middle 1920’s, the shirts were made more colorful with the addition of trim around the collar, down the front of the shirt and around the sleeve ends.
The St. Louis Cardinals’ defeat of the New York Yankees in the 1926 World Series brought St. Louis its first World Championship since 1886. The following season, the Cardinals donned uniforms boasting of their laurels. This self-promoting uniform style was first introduced by the 1906 New York Giants and repeated by the 1921 Cleveland Indians. The Cardinals of 1927 were the last club to advertise their champion status on their shirt front. Both the Cleveland Indians and New York Yankees were to open the 1929 season with uniform numbers on the back of their jerseys. But the April 16 opener at Yankee Stadium was rained out, and so the Indians became the first to play with this style of numbered uniform. After many brief experiments with uniform numbers during the first decades of the century, the 1929 trial finally took hold. The players still wore their knickers with belts.

Baseball History

...Baseball In the mid 1800’s a new sport emerged throughout America. They called it baseball, evolved from an old English game. From the moment it was invented it was instantly popular. Today baseball is known as The American Past Time. The baseball community and its athletes continue to grow year after year, as young athletes develop love for the game and its year round battles. Majority of baseball fans and non-baseball fans have been to a major league game and have both seen and felt the energy of the setting. .Baseball is responsible for priceless moments such as a father and son playing catch in the back yard. Many people find baseball too slow and think doesn’t require much skill to play, but as many of my former coaches would say the game is 50% mental and 50% Physical. one of the only sports as my high school coach . A big reason why people are attracted to baseball is because it is one of the only sports that involves a skilled athlete vs another skilled athlete, pitcher verse batter, 1 verse 1. As baseball revolutionized throughout baseball it became bigger and bigger. It reached other countries and they picked up the sport quickly and made their own leagues. Today baseball is one of the most popular sports out of all. Our fore fathers created and established many important things that shaped America to be the way it is today but only one is known as “Americas Past Time”. Baseball originated prior to the civil war, at the time it was called rounders. Rounders...

...| BASEBALL | Bernaditta Caballero | | Columban College-Barretto | 3/19/2012 | | Introduction: Baseball is a bat-and-ball sport played between two teams of nine players each. The aim is to score runs by hitting a thrown ball with a batand touching a series of four bases arranged at the corners of a ninety-foot diamond. Players on the batting team take turns hitting against thepitcher of the fielding team, which tries to stop them from scoring runs by getting hitters out in any of several ways. A player on the batting team can stop at any of the bases and later advance via a teammate's hit or other means. The teams switch between batting and fielding whenever the fielding team records three outs. One turn at bat for each team constitutes an inning and nine innings make up a professional game. The team with the most runs at the end of the game wins. Evolving from older bat-and-ball games, an early form of baseball was being played in England by the mid-eighteenth century. This game was brought by immigrants to North America, where the modern version developed. By the late nineteenth century, baseball was widely recognized as the national sport of the United States. Baseball is now popular in North America, parts of Central and South America and the Caribbean, and parts of East Asia. In North America, professional Major League Baseball (MLB) teams are divided into the National League (NL) and American League (AL), each with three divisions: East, West, and Central...

I f you were to ask 100 people, “Why do couples marry?” it is a safe bet that at least ninety would reply, “People marry because they fall in love.” Indeed, it is hard for us to imagine a happy marriage without love; likewise, when people fall in love, we expect them to think about marriage. But is the decision about whom to marry really so simple and so personal? There is plenty of evidence that if love is the key to marriage, Cupid’s arrow is carefully aimed by the society around us. In short, society has a number of “rules” about whom we should marry. What are they? Right off the bat, society rules out half the population because U.S. laws (despite recent actions in cities such as San Francisco and likely...

...Athletic HISTORY The first modern-style indoor athletics meetings were recorded shortly after in the 1860s, including a meet at Ashburnham Hall in London which featured four running events and a triple jump competition. The Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) was established in England in 1880 as the first national body for the sport of athletics and began holding its own annual athletics competition – the AAA Championships. The United States also began holding an annual national competition – the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships – first held in 1876 by the New York Athletic Club.[14] Athletics became codified and standardized via the English AAA and other general sports organisations in the late 19th century, such as the Amateur Athletic Union (founded in the US in 1888) and the Union des sociétésfrançaises de sports athlétiques (founded in France in 1889). An athletics competition was included in the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and it has been as one of the foremost competitions at the quadrennial multi-sport event ever since. Originally for men only, the 1928 Olympics saw the introduction of women's events in the athletics programme. Athletics is part of the Paralympic Games since the inaugural Games in 1960. Athletics has a very high profile during major championships, especially the Olympics, but otherwise is less popular. An international governing body, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF), was founded in 1912; it adopted its current...

Drug Addiction

...CHAPTER 2. A HISTORY OF DRUG AND ALCOHOL ABUSE IN AMERICA Written by: Tammy L. Anderson To appear in: Harrison, L., Anderson, T., Martin, S., and Robbins, C. Drug and Alcohol Use in Social Context. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth Publishing -1- A HISTORY OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL IN THE UNITED STATES Introduction The purpose of this chapter is to review the history of drug use and its social control in the United States so that students can gain an improved and thorough understanding of today’s problems and policies. Our approach to this matter is sociological, i.e., exploring how the interconnection between culture, social institutions, groups, and individuals function to create drug-related phenomena. A sociological approach integrates many kinds of social, cultural, political, and economic factors that manifest themselves in everyday life. While pharmacology helps us comprehend how specific drugs impact brain activity, sociology can inform us about the social roots of drugrelated behaviors which ultimately shape beliefs and behavior and motivate social policy. Therefore, a review of drug use in the U.S. and the social response to it must consider many diverse phenomena. This broader framework will move us beyond domestic borders and into the international community, for the history of drug abuse is an international, socio-political marvel. Another idea warrants mentioning before we begin our history lesson. It centers on the idea that drug use and abuse are socially...
