...THE AGE OF LEAD A This Canadian short story is about a woman, who through all of her youth believed in postmodern values and a life without consequences. Becoming an adult, she realizes more and more that there will be consequences if she acts. When her lifelong friend dies she accepts the consequences, but she can never live happily with them. Jane is a war child, which she hears repeatedly from her mother. Her mother goes on and on about consequences in her entire teenage life. She makes very good friends with a boy from school, Vincent. Their motto is “no belts, no pins, no pads, no chafing.” You could say that they are two little postmodernists. They do not want the social hierarchy “freedom from the world of mothers” (line 88), they do not want gender roles “they made fun of going out” (line 77). They want a world without consequences. When they go to university, Jane concentrates her boy-time on Vincent and starts to fall in love with him but nothing happens. Even though they both want to live a life without consequences, Jane still wants to make love to Vincent. That would certainly put? emphasis on the differences between them, which was what they made fun of a few years earlier. It is as if Jane does not really understand Vincent’s approach to life. She does not think these postmodern thoughts as he does. However, when he lives them, she understands it. The same pattern continues when Jane moves back to Vincent after a period of years. He is still the same and he...

...Legal Drinking Age Be Changed Back to Eighteen? The debate on the legal drinking age has been going on for many years. More mature adults say that the minimum legal drinking age should be kept at twenty-one. Young adults say that the minimum legal drinking age should be changed back to eighteen. There are many reasons that go behind the opinions of each. People believe that since the age of eighteen is the legal adult age in the United States of America that young adults should be able to make their own decisions on the consumptions of alcohol. Teens are still able to get alcohol due to parents, older siblings, friends, and other family members. Also, allowing eighteen to twenty year-olds to drink alcohol under supervision should lower the issue of underage drinking, and it will be good for the economy too. However, there are a lot of consequences that come with drinking at a younger age, such as eighteen year-olds have lower maturity than twenty-one year olds. Therefore, eighteens year-olds are more likely to get into negative alcohol and alcohol-related outcomes. With taking all opinions into consideration, you can see why this has been an ongoing debate on whether the minimum legal drinking age should be changed back to eighteen year-olds. I believe the debate should conclude on the prevision of allowing young adults to have the ability to make their own decisions upon alcohol consumption. Drew Saylor noted the effectiveness of the minimum legal drinking age, “The current...

...Topic: Drinking Age in the United States Specific Purpose: to motivate my audience to protest for lowering the Drinking Age from 21 Central Idea: Lowering the legal alcohol consumption age will reduce the rate of underage drinking charges: INTRODUCTION I. The Attention Step A. 10.4 million kids reported drinking last year so obviously this law is not working. The average teen begins drinking at 14, seven years before they can legally drink. 1. I’m sure at least a few of you have taken some of your parents alcohol without them knowing about it or have participated in underage drinking at some point in your life up to now and if not you might in college. 2. If you haven’t and don’t plan on it because it is illegal, just know that if the legal drinking age were changed, one would have nothing to think about. Transition: So why do we need to lower the drinking age? II. The Need Step: A. Since the drinking age was raised teens have tended to drink in more of an abusive manor. 1. In 2011 in the United States, 13,000 underage kids died from alcohol poisoning. The next closest country had just 5,000. 2. If the number of underage drinking charges in America reduces, then the overall rate of crime in America will drop therefore making America a safer country. 3. A recent Kansas City newspaper asked 8,726 students if the drinking age should be lowered. Out of 8,726 asked 7,992 said yes B. Underage kids want to consume alcohol and them not being of legal age will not be enough...

...SHOULD THE DRINKING AGE BE LOWERED???? While doing this research I have noticed that the views over whether or not the legal drinking age should be lowered to eighteen has still not been settled. It all started in 1984 with the national minimum drinking age act of 1984. This act required all states to raise their minimum age to 21(http://www2.potsdam.edu/alcohol). This law started on July 17, 1984. For a long time people have talked about the good and bad to being able to drink alcohol before the age of twenty – one and still have not been able to come to a conclusion (Drinking Age ProCon.org). Even though most of my peers my think I am crazy for saying this, but I feel the drinking age should not be lowered. Many young American teenagers may disagree with me. They may argue that when you are 18 you can join the army and go to war and die for your country but you still can not drink. Some may say how is eighteen so different from twenty – one. How can three more years of not drinking be helpful to someone maturety level or health. Based on the information I have found in researching, I will explain why the legal drinking age should remain at the age of twenty – one. I will talk about the responsibility that comes with drinking, the medical issues it can cause and the impact it will have on even a younger age group. We as teenagers have not yet reached an age where we can handle alcohol in a responsible way or even understand the effects it can have on us...

...Carol Gore 4-10-14 A1. Decision Alternative The whistles that were scheduled to be shipped to schools in South America at the end of the week contained a higher amount of lead than the U.S legally acceptable limit will allow for children ages 7 and younger. The cost that will be extensive to reproduce the product and repackage the whistles in order to reduce the traces of lead. The decision must be made as to what the next course of action will be to meet quality requirements as well as the ethical concern that would be present if we shipped the whistles with the problem that has been identified. I believe there are a few options to consider. 1) The first action would be to immediately re-test the product to ensure the quality assurance test was accurate. This might involve additional dollars spent, but would be worth the risk if the quality controls were calibrated incorrectly, or performed inadequately. If the re-evaluation reveals similar results then we will proceed with additional alternatives. 2) If the retesting reveals similar results, we can sell the current shipment to an older age population. The lead testing, and acceptable levels are very specific to a certain age population. The lead level was too high for the children 7 and under but might be acceptable for children over the age of 7. If this alternative is not an option then we will be forced to reproduce additional products to meet the demand for this toy. 3) Reproduction of the toy, if necessary...

...Currently, most of the states in the United States of America have an age limit of 18 or 19 to buy tobacco products. At this age, people are considered to be in the adolescent age group. The young are going through a transition that affects them mentally, emotionally, and physically. They are not in the state of mind to make a decision about choosing something that could lead into a lifelong habit. The tobacco product that is used most widely is cigarettes. The decision to smoke has several harmful effects. Smoking can cause lung cancer, emphysema or chronic bronchitis. Moreover, it can lead to death. The ability to make the right decisions comes with age. The legal age to buy tobacco products should be 21 because by that age a person is mature enough to make the decision. The stage of adolescence is a beautiful phase of life for a person. During this phase, a person encounters many developments inside the body and in the environment. Unfortunately, this phase brings along some issues with it, such as psychological disorders, behavior issues, health issues, social issues, substance use and abuse, and much more. With so many issues going on, an adolescent finds solace and comfort in smoking. Smoking releases a chemical in the brain that makes a person feel good. Therefore, it is addictive. Many...

...argued the democratic system in the UK is anything but democratic. Suggested ways to improve this would be to lower the voting age to 16, increase the use of referendums and reform the House of Lords to be an elected chamber. On the one hand, the most important way to improve the democratic framework to the UK would be to increase the use of referendums. Considered to be the rawest form of direct democracy, it allows the electorate to cast their decision as a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to what the executive may be asking. Examples of this include the 1975 EU referendum on whether Britain would remain in the EU, resulting in a turnout of 64% and the Scottish Independence referendum of 2014 which has a turnout of around 86%. The increase use of referendums would improve democracy in the UK because it would mean that citizens can directly respond to political concern, raising participation. It also checks on elective dictatorships- ensuring they are accountable to the public. From this, it is evident that increasing the use of referendums would improve democracy as it ensures the accountability of government and raised participation. On the other hand, referendums would have a negative impact on democracy as it would lead to apathy. Increase use of referendums, especially when the only means of voting is by travelling to a polling station or posting, may lead to apathy among the electorate as they become disillusioned with constantly being questioned by the government. For example,...
