One of the many popular theories of space and time that people like to explore is that of the “Alternate Timeline”. It is the type of idea that boggles and stimulates the brain to the point of exhaustion or inspiration. The idea that there are multiple versions of our history, and especially of us, is one that entices science fiction readers, intrigues the space enthusiast, and mystifies the generally curious. Part of this alternate timeline theory is the emphasis of the “Butterfly Effect”, which implies that all events that occur- around our individual person and across the globe- happen for a reason and have a specific result or consequence. Vincent a machine of curiosity and wonder, but a haven of open-mindedness and the deepest understanding. Quite fittingly, the man with a doctorate in English is also a master at communication. As one of the younger faculty members, he was able to speak to his students on an entirely new level, understanding our language and our own concerns. He was able to ease our anxieties about college and heavily encouraged us to pursue our dreams. I have never felt so supported, in all my life, by a person who was not a member of my family. And though despite his not being with our school during my final year, I have recalled, many times, his small wisdoms. Ironically, I never had him for English. But there was plenty to be learned in math. I remember once, while we had some time to spare, our class had gotten on the topic of what it meant to comprehend the material we were learning. Many had a black and white view about it. The illustration of how confident we felt about derivatives was of an ON and OFF switch. So, Mr. Vincent turned to the board and drew a dial. It read: “I don’t get it… I sort of get it… I know most of it… I can do this” (or something along those lines). His own explanation of our understanding was colored using a spectrum of greys. There are many stages of “getting” something. This idea has motivated me to continue pushing through all the obstacles placed before me rather than abandon all my efforts. Not understanding one element is no reason to give up on all of whatever it is a person is after. Rather, it should be the thing that drives them to seek more knowledge- to understand
